Why was the defense so bad today?

Regardless of what you think about our offensive performance, I'm curious why people think the defense did so poorly today.

Some observations:
- Did a lot of playing 8-10 yards off the receivers, and gave up 5-7 yard quick outs several times.
- Telegraphed corner blitzes on several occasions, Duke threw past the blitzes for big yards
- On at least one bubble screen, Lance Austin ran right into the blocker like he was a magnet instead of going at the ball carrier. Really weird
- Got gashed by the read option. Even our better stops were 2-3 yard gains. Not strong enough on DL?
- Couldn't keep contain on the QB, he eluded pressure several times for big yards

Duke did a good job spreading us out and mixing up their play calls. I guess they were able to do that because we couldn't stop any one facet of their offense

Unknown. Just strange to watch a shit school like Duke run plays and their guys aren't getting TOUCHED until they're 8 yds downfield.

Your curiosity has been satisfied....and his name is Roof....Ted Roof.

Inability to tackle, bad pursuit angles, inability of our offense to stay on the field in the 2nd half, and being physically beaten by a more athletic Duke offense.

They played with their head up their butts. Why? Hot Friday night in Durham? Dook spiked the gatorade? Idiot coaching? "Looking ahead"? Gypsy curse?

You guys don't remember our offense? From 2:09 to go in the 1st half, till the end of the game, we had two (2!) first downs and 78 yds (45 on a pass to Juene) total offense. Offense definitely has to take some of the blame.

Well, start a thread called “why was the offense so bad?”

I’ll post pictures of CPJ and Marshall.

The defense lacks size and speed up front and is poorly coached
so......
1) Recruiting, especially on the defense has regressed under CPJ
2) Recruiting under the offense has regressed (remember Calvin? Dwyer?)
3) We seem to have no plan and just wing it when out there.

1&2) the Dwyer and Nesbitt class was basically an anomaly. Calvin Johnson was a freak anomaly. If you throw out the Nesbitt and Dwyer class recruiting ranking is close. We just seem to be taking guys smaller overall because we feel we can make them into something. It's not working as we are getting demolished on the lines. CPJ needs to realize he can't scheme past better players and on par coaching. We need bigger more athletic bodies.
3) The plan is to outrun the cb for a long pass. They know the plan and were covering. That is the only thing left in CPJ's O when you can't run because the oline is getting whipped like toddlers.

The only knock on Chan recruiting wise is he couldn't get OL or a QB. Renfree was headed in when Chan was canned so you just never know how that would have worked out. We always had stud LB's and good DB's under Chan and some pretty damn good DL. Cooper was a pretty good TE when he was here and we let the one kid go to Alabama who would have fit our team pretty well.
We were pretty good at spotting players like Vance Walker early and holding onto him. We were severely hampered early on by Flunkgate under Chan.
Our recruiting has been shit for a while now.

Gailey recruited two of the best receivers to play in the state in the last 30 years. Dwyer was the Parade AA running back from the state. Derrick Morgan was a highly regarded recruit as was Nesbitt IIRC. So was Morgan Burnette

We were putting guys in the NFL with Gailey. Johnson has a few, but it’s nothing like what we were doing.

Recruiting has definitely fallen off.

I realize all of that. The thing is Chan is gone and GT needs to fix it's problems now or just quit having football. Chan lost because he put one of the worst excuse of an O together for years and years when he had really good pieces. Chan still had no depth and we were generally smaller than a lot of teams we played. GT must figure out the NCAA doesn't care about how smart players. Really the NCAA doesn't seem to care how much cash you give them either as long as you make the NCAA money.

And GT needs to realize that 85 scholarship football players are not going to kill the school’s reputation. I’m not saying I want a team full of Leonard Popes.
