Why was the defense so bad today?

Gailey recruited two of the best receivers to play in the state in the last 30 years. Dwyer was the Parade AA running back from the state. Derrick Morgan was a highly regarded recruit as was Nesbitt IIRC. So was Morgan Burnette

We were putting guys in the NFL with Gailey. Johnson has a few, but it’s nothing like what we were doing.

Recruiting has definitely fallen off.

Those guys with Nesbitt we're the best single class GT has ever had. That only ever happened once when Gailey was here and is not indicative of a GT football recruiting class.

GT needs that class every year and should be able to get it with the recruiting around Atlanta.

I still really haven’t been able to reconcile how bad the defense was that game, especially the second half. I know the “fire Ted Roof” mantra has been a thing all year, and there have been some terrible series (bubble screens haunt my dreams), but overall our defense has actually been decent most of the year. Then somehow we go and make Duke look like an offensive juggernaut.

(And yeah, I know, the offense was bad too)

Yeah, but add those guys to the ones who may not have been top recruits but had good size and speed (like a lot of our linebackers) and we were fielding pretty talented teams outside of a few positions.

You cannot teach size or speed. I think Johnson appreciates this with speed, but he’s been terrible at recruiting size. We’ve always been undersized, but never as much as we are now.

Our defense has been “decent” all year when it’s not crunch time. They’ve shit the bed in 3 games when it counted most (Tennessee, Miami and Virginia). Clemson jumped so far ahead so fast that nothing mattered and Duke pushed their shit in.

The only time our Defense has been clutch was a freshman making a fingertip save against VT.

I mean, I don’t really have any arguments with what you’re saying. “Decent” was generous.

We still haven’t had any other games near the complete defensive futility we saw yesterday. We haven’t been clutch (other than VT), but we also haven’t had another offense march up and down the field on us the entire game.

Calvin wasn't in that class.

We really have trouble with tempo offenses. We are much better when the other team huddles and plays slow.

We were so bad on D vs puke because of CPJ. His name is on the HC office door.

This. 1) Recruiting, especially on the defense has regressed under CPJ
2) Recruiting under the offense has regressed (remember Calvin? Dwyer?)
3) We seem to have no plan and just wing it when out there.

Listening to Stansbury from Friday, it sounds like we are about to up our recruiting game. More recruiting staff, new locker rooms, and Adidas is coming. Encouraging.

Of course, an AD is always going to say we're working to improve recruiting, but I see Stansbury making concrete steps that Bobinski and Radakovich really didn't.

I just don’t get it either. Wake Forest will have their way with this Duke team, and our defense murdered them in the second half.

There has to be something external.

Just another DEAD effort by DEf -see unc last yr.I know you can get beat but BEAT DOWN by team that lost 6 in row and scored 16 pts on ARMY! who is the DEf coach, er head coach?

I gotta admit, this one got me.

That’s a guaranteed 5 yard gain to any eligible receiver.
It's especially aggravating given the situation. Duke had scored on us every possession to that point. So rather than get up on the line and take some chances at a stop, we just sit back...

Roof's thinking seems to be backwards. When getting beat he gets more risk averse, compounding the problem, when we should start taking more risks

We came into the game with an elitist attitude just like our fans and thought “oh it’s just Duke and they lost to Army.” We should cruise to a 20 pt win!” We got our teeth kicked in and played soft as hell.

Lol. Where are we undersized on D? DT? Maybe? Nickel? definitely.
