Wommack vs Tenuta

Neither of these guys is going to be our DC next season. Who do ya'll think we should go after for Wommack's replacement?

This is the real question, and we don't need to make the mistake of firing Wommack if we don't know who is going to replace him. We could get the same... or worse.

In my opinion though, we were doing good with Wommack. Than, all of the sudden, everyone figured out his defense, and now we can't stop anybody. I just don't get it, but its got to be fixed.

'cause our DL is so stellar?
Coach Giff always puts a productive DL on the field. This year has to be one of the least talented defensive lines he's had at Tech, so I wouldn't write him off for that. Plus, he's a hell of a recruiter.

Oh, I read that Paul Johnson's first choice was Ellis Johnson who's now at South Carolina. That would have been a fantastic hire. Give me that guy.

I was going to say Jeff Casteel, but I don't think he'd make a lateral move, and also after watching his highlight reel from last year, it appears he runs a base 3-3-5 and dials up a lot of blitzes from different places. Kind of reminded me of a Tenuta out of a 3-3-5 base. I don't see that working in the ACC very well...of course I could be wrong.

While I'm not high on Wommack right now, I think we're looking back on Tenuta a bit better then we should. He was a complete asshole, he hates recruiting, and his teams aren't really doing much better right now, and he's got all-world talent. ND was one bad throw away from being 1-2, and you can blame that squarely on Tenuta's defense. They should have beat Michigan, they should have manhandled Michigan State, and watch what happens when USC plays them. Tenuta's defense won't have the luxury of sitting around during sustained drives, and they will get absolutely picked apart. Worse then we were on Thursday night.

You are so right again Kyle!!! Tenuta basically had scraps when he arrived in 2002 and in his second year in 2003.

Yeah, that's what I've been saying. The cupboard most certainly wasn't bare for Tenuta, while Wommack is suffering right now from Gailey's recruiting lean years, due to either probation or just bad recruiting. Tenuta didn't do so hot either Gailey's last year, with less NFL-caliber talent.

From what a friend explained to me, Alabama runs a lot of blitzes from a 3-4-4 defense, and I'd imagine that a 3-3-5 would be similar cept the blitzers are speedier. From what I understood is you can put 6 or more guys in on the line/in the box and the offense won't know which ones are actually blitzing.

I wonder what limitations we have on money we can pay and talent we can get in terms of getting a defensive coordinator. (certainly can't take the Tennessee route and pay a coordinator half a million).

Yea but at least with a 3-4 or a 4-3 you have 7 guys that can handle the big OLines and run heavy teams we face. With the 3-3-5, you're putting us into a similar situation as the 4-2-5 except worse, because you're losing even more size in the way of more speed.

Going the all speed route has worked for Florida hasn't it :D;)
