Coffee is for Closers Paul!

There is a problem with recruiting whether you want to think it or not....and PJ only has one year to figure it out....Roof is in the waiting...

It makes you wonder if that is why Roof took the job.

I'm with you on Sewak...he's useless and should have been let go years ago. But the statement about slowing down or stopping on babysitting commitments simply isn't true.

McCollum told the story this morning about the safety that we just signed from Panacea, FL that he had made a trip to Panacea at least once a week for the last year to visit the kid...having watched him wrestle, meet with the parents/grandparents, etc.

That was probably Speed. Sewak's the who didn't keep up.

The fact is we need some closers. This is what has prevented us from getting the NFL-ready players we need to perform at a high level. We have a solid class. It's a little small because PJ redshirts so much i guess to get kids grades setup well.

The thing that boggles my mind is this, how can we not find 22-25 approx. 3 star football players that want to play for GT.

we could if we could give out that many scholarships. We redshirt a lot of players probably to make sure they are ready for the academic rigors, and also because Johnson saw its affect on quality depth at the Naval Academy where everyone is basically forced to redshirt.

We had 18 scholarships to give. Not 16. We missed by 4 and again created a lopsided recruiting class.

That's true. CPJ's vehement refusal to oversign on the extremely low chance the numbers don't work is handcuffing our abilities to fill classes, but I don't see how#'s 81-85 are going to help get us over the hump.

I think it's a different problem than the original one you brought up which is the inability to close the deal.

No, it was McCollum talking about himself making the weekly trip to Florida. He even joked that now that the kid has signed, he would finally be able to go red fishing with the kid's granddad...who offered to take him several times but he couldn't do that before because it would be a recruiting violation.

Besides the fact that Joe Speed is black and Andy McCollum is white, I happen to know Andy quite well. Ask any of the coaches on staff or the players and they'll tell you that our best 3 recruiters on staff last year were McCollum, Speed, and Charles Kelly. Our 2 new coaches are also known as avid recruiters, so hopefully they will help with beating the bushes, then babysitting the commits.

We aren't an SEC team, therefore we aren't allowed to get 30 commitments and then grey shirt or let loose ten of them.
When was the last time an SEC school had to let someone out of their commitment due to the inability to even qualify academically?

This class is the worst class since 2002 and that's saying something. There are 5 kids in this class who can make a difference in the depth chart.

HMMM.....looks like this class beats every single Gailey class except the 2007 one.

Average stars year to year:
2013: 2.71
2012: 3.00
2011: 2.91
2010: 3.17
2009: 2.90
2008: 2.65
2007: 3.30
2006: 2.69
2005: 2.37
2004: 2.21
2003: 2.67
2002: 2.88

Nothing like a bunch of middle aged white folk explaining that the only thing that should matter to an 18 year old black kid is being in a city with a bunch of HBCU's

Do you think the glut of white people is a key selling point Iowa uses to attract those giant white linemen?

Hey speak for yourself.

Also, there was more to the discussion than that.

I like PJ but if he can't sell his system, he's going to lose his job. We had 18 ships to give and we came up short AGAIN. We lost 4 players to other schools in less than a week before signing day. We flipped a kid from UAB as a consolation prize.

It isn't hard to sell GT. How hard is it to sell Urban ATL life with hip hop culture a The ATL night life with surrounding colleges like Morehouse, Ga State, Spelman, Morris Brown, etc over rural öööööö Ole Miss? How ööööing hard is it? Holy öööö I could do this its that easy. We don't have a closer in this whole öööö staff!

We have a bunch of fat baggage assistants who have zero Ability to sell this school, this program, this culture. Why? It isn't ööööing hard.

Roof and Pelton were upgrades one year late. They are a start as far as improving our recruiting. But Sewak sucks my asshole and Walkosky, McCollum, and Bohannen better get their öööö together. Assistants have two key jobs and these losers do both poorly.

I have supported PJ since day one, but this piss ass poor trend in recruiting will be his undoing. There ain't no spinning this. This effort was pure öööö.

Your argument lost all its salt after that line.

I agree that the recruiting NEEDS to get better, but that's trivializing the problem. It's the same type of simplistic troll-like argument that plague sports discussions.

TECH is a tough sale to the average kid. TECH is an engineering school. Next time you are around some kids in your family ask how many want to study technology. There are few and far between. Now just for fun find kids that are great athletes and want to study Technology and you are down to probably 50-100 a year across the nation. I know TECH has a business school; however, you still have to take two semesters of calculus. When I was at TECH everyone had to take Physics and Chemistry as well. Very tough classes that a kid at Georgia or Ole Miss will never have to take.

Wait a couple years, and BOR will claim that this thread was just a big troll.

Shamire Devine and Chris Griffin will both be NFL OL.
At least 1 of Commissiong, Robbins and Akins will be NFL DL.
Butker will be NFL kicker
Custis will be an NFL RB.

Paul Davis will remind us of Julian Burnett, and Jeune and Messick will both be good receivers.

.

Nobody is saying this class doesn't have a few impact players.

But the overall quality of it sucks. I don't understand how anybody can defend this horrid recruiting effort.

I've asked this question before but haven't received a decent response yet. Why should the football coach not be granted as many academic exceptions as he wants? Why should the hill have a say so in it if the kid meets NCAA requirements? It is, after all, a self-policing issue with the APR standards set in place by the NCAA.

I'm sure someone can explain it far better than me, but it goes back to "Flunkgate" or whatever under Gailey. I guess they were granting more exceptions, and as a result of that episode, it was decided that we would increase our level of scrutiny in the area of academic qualification.

I may have that all wrong, hopefully someone else can put their two cents in.

If you google Gailey and Flunkgate, you'll see some stuff.
