Our defense looks "good" in the rankings because the offense limits possessions (like 8 per game instead of the typical 10-12) so opposing offenses run fewer plays against us. If you look at per play stats, we are terrible.

We are #77 in country at 5.68 YPP allowed. Not great by any means, but hardly "terrible". (LINK)

On a related note - VPI is #3 at 3.77 YPP allowed. :scared: We've also faced #5, #6, and #7 in that list (Miami, Clemson, and BC, respectively)

Good news- dwags are #82, GaSo is #62, UVA #105, and UNCheat #66. All winnable games with that in mind, if Roof can get his crap together.

I think we have different definitions of the word "terrible". Having 40% of a set being worse than you sounds bad, but not "terrible", IMO. I'm curious how you would describe the bottom 10% or so of this set.

Having said that, we *looked* terrible on defense on Saturday, though (again) showed improvement in 2nd half - a fluke play w/ a huge missed non-call notwithstanding.

I mean, whatever you want to call it, it's much worse than #21 in the country which people kept using as a reason why our defense wasn't that bad

Two things:

1) Where you fall in the rankings is far from important. 5.8 yards per play allowed is really garbage.

2) Some of this is a product of the bend but don't break style. Our notorious 10 yard cushions between the 20's, etc.

Inside the RZ, we're significantly better. 2.86 yards per rush allowed, 3.0 yards per pass.

Pitt was an abysmal performance, though. First time all season we've allowed a team over 3 points per possession.

Though I see your point, I'm not sure I agree given the caliber of offenses we've faced. But still agree with overall point that our defense is less than desirable and Saturday's showing was pathetic.

Included in that stat is Vanderbilt, Mercer, and BC. Those aren't exactly high caliber offenses. We held our average against Clemson at 5.3 yards per play, which is pretty good, but Miami raked in 7.7 yards per play and Pitt was at 6.1. Those numbers are not good.

Tech pass defense is ranked 118th in the nation. That is the problem. That is why Tech can't get off the field on 3rd down.

I watched the Miami game. When they ran the ball, Tech could stop them. When Miami passed the ball, they would walk down the field and score easily. When the score was 28-7 after the two fumbles by JT5, Miami started running the ball. Tech caught up, and made the score 28-21. Miami started passing again. They walked down the field and scored easily to make it 35-21.

Tech has no pass rush. The QB has all day to throw the ball. The Tech secondary is too small and too slow. They play off the receiver and leave too much cushion, to compensate.

How about checking out the allocation of offensive players recruited vs defensive players recruited before you gang up on Roof. How many defensive tackles and ends do we have? How many AB's do we have?

Roof coached the defense at Auburn when they won the NC.

Considering that there are only 64 schools in the Power 5 conferences, #77 is pretty bad.

I'm not sure if firing Roof is the answer. He's done slightly more with probably less talent than either of our previous DC's, plus he's a Tech man and one of our better recruiters.

Honestly I think the problem is as simple as finding a guy you can rely on for pass rush. Simmons is decent, but he's inconsistent and outside of him we've got NOBODY.

It's hard to recruit d-lineman because nobody wants to get cut blocked all spring and summer camp

It depends on whether we want our team to be good, mediocre, or bad. #77 in the country in most rankings won't put us in the "good" category.
