Paul Johnson and retirement

It makes sense though and he's more involved with the program than others.

There's no way that CPJ has told anyone what his plans are. He's not that kind of guy.

It's not in his hands anymore.

Well sure there's that option. If we have a coaching staff that's not under a long-term contract our recruiting will drop lower than it currently is. We will be getting nothing but 1 and 2 star kids.

Our best bet is to cut him loose this year and negotiate his buyout. Cheaper if we just fired him on the spot but better than if he works next year and then get's let go.

So not a big drop off then.

You, me or savband can bitch about the coach or want him to stay or whatever. It has no effect. But big money donors actually do have a say and the word is they're done. Thats what i meant by its not in his hands anymore. And it is better to have the new coach start with some weapons in his arsenal like the new facilities.

I’m pretty worn out after this season. While I want Tech to win as much as possible, I’m also a bit disappointed that it seems just enough games were won to hold the status quo.....and the status quo sucks. So here we are stuck between the preferred outcomes - a great season or a season that gets change.

Really we gotta decide if we wanna compete with Clemson and uga every year. Thats the change we need. Right now the status quo is good enough to be better than average in ACC Coastal. Which isnt saying much because theyre all horribly coached teams. Paul will get us to 8, sometimes 9 wins with what he has. And that speaks volumes about his coaching since his recruiting is the bottom of the ACC. But it aint enough to beat your archrival. Not the way they're recruiting. Its also not enough to beat Clemson. And really what do we care about more than anything? Beating uga. If that aint happening we need change sometime in the near future.

Then again we only won what like 14 COFH games since leaving the SEC and lost 40? Maybe Dodd ööööed us for good.

I hear you, but I think that's in large part due to COFH. If that game had been even a little competitive – even if we lose by the same margin, but it's close through three quarters or something – then I don't think you'd feel so bad about this year. It was a disappointment for sure, but in general people's perception is heavily shaped by the most recent events. And until COFH, the team had been playing really well in the last 3/4 of the season.

I’m not sure about that. This was a horrible ACC this year.

After reflecting on it, I think the second half comeback and overall 7-5 record is minimally enough for CPJ to stay if he wants to. But we looked sooooo bad in the losses and the fanbase is so unenthusiastic that he should stay on the hot seat.

Stansbury is in a strong position to push for staff changes or other tweaks and it would be wise to begin an exit strategy like what Akinji is describing. If CPJ isn't amenable, you just accelerate it.

That doesn’t make much sense to me.

Big money donors want him gone. But he needs to stay during perhaps the program’s largest donation campaign in decades?

Something about that story seems fishy.

Ask @18in32, I’ll bet he can tell us more than anyone else here if he’s willing to divulge.

I don't want to traffic in gossip, but I will offer a personal observation... just like CPJ doesn't suffer fools gladly on the radio show or among the press, he doesn't suffer them gladly elsewhere, either. But in any political job, there will always be fools to suffer, fools with money and power and opinions. I know people willing to put up with his snarkiness to be close to the center of power, but I know people it's alienated, too. The crusty curmudgeon thing gets old fast if you're not winning.

I’ve noted to more than one non-Tech fan that Paul’s salty attitude is hilarious when things are going well and the most infuriating thing ever when they are not.

we should fire paul johnson and just deal with the 1-11, 2-10 seasons. We cannot compete with anyone. football is far two complex for our studint afletes to do and take ingineering classus. I really hope our guys go root for georgia saturday and i have a $5 georgia hat i bobijy at the circle kay. if i don't root for georgia i got to root for some yankee. go dawgs!! they rub this stAit!

I sure hope you are right

I don’t think we played really well against Miami and UVa. Miami’s D shut us down. They just lost on ST. Virginia’s short passing games killed us. Pitt’s running game killed us. UGa and Clemson have all three of those pieces.

A new coach with the status quo isn't going to be able to make any changes. In fact we'll probably regress. They wanna give the new coach a clean slate with much improved facilities to get him a leg up in recruiting. That's why Paul's not gone right now.
