680 reporting Whisenhunt offered the job

If we’re talking about Whiz as more of a CEO who can evaluate and hire good coordinators to manage the offense, defense, and positions, that is something I could get behind - especially if he is an energetic and inspiring leader.

Once a coaching decision is made, we will be stuck for 4-5 years, because we can't afford to pay another coach to leave. The best way to reduce that risk is to pick a coach that has demonstrated specific talents that would apply to the challenges to the program. For example, CPJ had success at Navy where the recruiting problems were similar, and he did that by running an offense that made better use of the athletes he could recruit. It doesn't matter how charismatic or smart a coach is. If he doesn't have a definite strategy to overcome the recruiting issues at Tech, we will end up in the bottom half of the ACC. What specific talent or strategy does Whisenhunt have to overcome the handicap of coaching at Tech? I don't see a single thing to impress me in that respect.

His "proven track record" simply does not have a lot of bearing on what his job will be as a college HC. He hasn't been in the college game in forever, he hasn't recruited, he hasn't coached college kids who have school work, are broke, and immature, and he hasn't hired a staff.

I have no doubt that he knows what he is doing when it comes to running an NFL offense, though.
Yet we don't even know if Elliot can put together a staff or recruit to GT and yet a lot of GT folks seem to be on that bandwagon. He is coaching at Clemson. Not hard to recruit to Clemson right now

I wouldn't say stuck for 4-5 years. However, we need to give the new coach a full recruiting cycle all the way to RS seniors.

This same argument is being made against Whisenhunt. Really comes down to whose experience is more applicable

Lol at you ppl believing 680
I don't listen to any radio other than the CPJ / new HC postgame on FM as I am leaving the game. Most of the time, I am late for it because we watch "The Horse" after the game and calmly wander back to A2, which is the most awesome parking spot on campus. In fact, I have our FM station to where I can hit the radio button and it is automatically on our post game. If post game isn't on, Spotify.

If there's any truth to us already offering Whiz, having made these plans in-season, offering CPJ a nice early retirement package, not focusing on anyone else, it would be the most Tech thing ever if he ends up turning it down because this season for him went way better than expected and now there's the possibility of him getting another NFL HC job.

When Collins walks into a 4 or 5 star recruit’s house, what can he say that sets him above his competitors?

This article (repost from the other thread) probably helps describe what he would do: https://www.sbnation.com/college-fo...-coaching-search-louisville-appalachian-state

Collins, a Georgia native, was a well-respected defensive coordinator at Mississippi State and Florida who would make strides in dramatically modernizing the public perception of the program. He’s been aggressive in doing so at Temple by engaging in media and marketing to connect the program to the city. In Atlanta, Collins can double down on his brand of fun in the city he grew up around.

He’d at least try to make Georgia Tech cool. But marrying Tech’s culture as an academically rigorous institution to one of the most vibrant and diverse metropolitan areas in the country isn’t easy. Atlanta has a large influence on pop culture. That’s not exactly something synonymous with the Georgia Institute of Technology. But the potential is there for someone to make an in-city school to Atlanta what The U is to Miami and USC is to Los Angeles.

And when you click the "Brand of Fun" link in the article, you get this article about Collins' recruiting techniques. Or you can read about how he seeks to motivate players in this article. also linked in the original article. Clearly he knows how to work hard to stay relevent with young players and he's willing to put himself out there to do it.

And here we are.

And not a single darn person has mentioned that Brian Van Gorder is available.

Can't help but post this for you clowns to chew on. Anyone, and I mean anyone who is pissed off about potentially having Ken Whisenhunt as the next GT head coach over Satterfield, Tony Elliot, any other 3O coach not named Johnson, or even Geoff Collins is a ööööing dumbass. Like next level stupid.

Whisenhunt isn't Gailey. Go listen to the guy sometime. He clearly has a charisma about him that is needed as a Head Coach and potential recruiter. He learned under Bill Cowher!!! who is arguably one of the top 5 coaches in the last 25 years in professional football! He helped develop Ben Rothlisberger AND Phillip Rivers. In fact Rivers under Whisenhunt is having one of his better career years. This is not like Chan Gailey. NFL QB's couldn't stand Gailey most notably Troy Aikman who ultimately got Gailey fired from Dallas. We should be lucky as hell we could get the Whiz!

You guys want to öööö on a GT connected coach at the highest level for a head coach at an FCS school, a young OC at Clemson who hasn't done öööö, and a recent head coach at a mid major? If Collins turns out to be our coach I will not be disappointed, but all of you poo pooing Ken Whisenhunt are öööö tards of the highest level. This is in a nut shell why I stopped posting over here because the IQ of the average fan on Stingtalk is level pathetic. You guys are still funny, and I enjoy reading on occasion but anyone up in arms against the Whiz is next level stupid.

Nailed it. And I'm not some KW fanboy here - but the posters on here pretending that Collins and Elliot are stone cold locks to be great HC's are just a bit optimistic in their handicapping. Why don't we let our team do their interviews, complete their due diligence, and rely upon their years of full-time experience in collegiate athletics to make the right decision, versus a bunch of alums behind their keyboards.

Unfortunately this sounds like what happened in the basketball coach process. We thought we had Drew locked up then the Vanderbilt position opened up.

Agreed. They all have some risk. I would say that Elliott is part of the reason why it's not hard to recruit to Clemson right now. As good as Clemson is, though, if recruits didn't like the coaches, didn't like the offense, and believe they can both win and go to the NFL, then they wouldn't just keep piling into Clemson. he's part of the reason why they do.

All good points. Elliott would be a better than typical option among the "hire a young assistant" options. Have some of those likes you're in it for.

Well. TS is in New York today for the CFB Hall of Fame dinner. I don't think it's a stretch to think that while he's up there he will interview Monken. Maybe this whole KW thing is just a smoke screen to lower expectations among the Tech fan base that when Monken is announced as HC after the Army-Navy game, the reaction will be relief and excitement instead of anger. Do you think TS is that smart?
