Whisenhunt and fan interest.

Why use this anecdotal crap instead of actual stats? Go count the number of 4/5 stars they recruited each year. Go look at the actual recruiting RANKINGS. They're obviously flawed, but it's a much better metric than you looking back fondly on the good players you remember and calling me delusional when I remember we were inexcusably awful at QB and OL recruiting and completely lacking of depth all over the field. All of those future NFL players you reference were included in the recruiting rankings that had Johnson's classes pretty much on par with Gailey's. Like I said, Gailey was either extremely lucky, or awesome at finding undervalued talent, but he wasn't taking players away from the big boys any more than Johnson was. 2007 was an incredible class by GT standards, but it was a complete outlier and 2008 was looking more like previous years than it was 2007.
Gailey single handedly kept UGAg from winning a Natty by signing Calvin Johnson

Some guy named Demaryius Thomas was pretty good.

Ever hear of a guy named Jonathan Dwyer, who was recruited by Gailey.

Sean Renfree was committed to Tech when Gailey was hired. Johnson agreed with him that he wasn't a good fit for his system and Renfree chose Duke instead.

Andrew Gardner signed with Calvin and played several years in the pros but I agree he was the outlier. Gailey didn't seem to have a lot of successful OL recruits. But that matches the # of OL from Johnson who have gone pro unless I'm missing someone other than Shaq Mason.
No idea how I forgot Bay Bay, but my point still stands. Those guys are included in the rankings that have Gailey on par with Johnson.

There was that other receiver that couldn't get past the hill that could have been a good one. Donley or something?

DJ Donley? I think he was here 1 season, seem to remember him blocking a punt or something like that, then disappearing never to be heard from again.

Anti-Johnson derangement is tough to shake. @GTCrew4b is right - the pro-Johnson folks are the only ones capable of giving credit where credit is due.

Maybe it was someone else. I can't remember. I seem to remember a WR recruit we wanted that could not get in that was pretty good

I think the issue is that we have no reason to believe that Whisenhunt would be a good hire. His head coaching record is 48-71, he only has 2 winning seasons out of 8, his college coaching experience consists of 2 seasons as a tight end coach over 20 years ago for a team that went 4-18, he isn't known for being innovative or doing anything particularly different from anyone else, and most importantly, there are multiple options out there that seem a lot more exciting than he does.
Saban didn’t too very well in the NFL either

Weren't you one of the posters who would constantly reference the revised recruiting rankings one of the sites would put out after they graduated? It was always an upward revision with Gailey and we had a couple Top 25 classes before even the 2007 class. I forget what site or when they stopped doing that (maybe they didn't and we just don't like what they say now).

My point: recruiting rankings have changed drastically in the last ten years. You almost never see a two star in our classes anymore. I'd argue that CPJ's 3* = CCG's 2*. Regardless, gailey did either a better job evaluating or developing players or both because we ended up with way more NFL talent under him.

I'd really like to see a comparison between the offer sheets between CPJ and CCG recruits, number who had no other P5 offers, number of offers from big time programs etc. It would be interesting but I'm too lazy/busy to do it and the information from recruiting sites can be very lacking sometime.

I think AJ Jenkins or something like that. Went to Illinois. 1st round pick. IIRC

True, but Saban started his coaching career by spending 10 years as an assistant coach in then Division 1-A (Now, FBS) before his first stint in the NFL. Prior to taking the job at Alabama, Saban had 20 years of college coaching experience, half of it as a head coach, and 6 years in the NFL.

Whisenhunt, on the other hand, has just two years of coaching experience at the collegiate level (Vanderbilt) and that was in the mid-90's. He'd be coming to GT with just two years of college coaching experience that is of questionable relevance considering it occurred 20 years ago.
