You want to be the 2nd coach after Saban, not the first.
Stallings was the third coach after Bryant. Saban was the fourth after Stallings (not counting Price and some interim bowl coach).

Bama folks are smart and they learned from past mistakes (Shula, Perkins, etc.). They already know Collins and what he can do so I’m not surprised his name is out there. With his success at Bama and Florida the entire SEC knows him. He’s similar to Dan Mullens in that he won’t have to win big time at GT to get a big time job. Smart AD’s are past looking at win/losses as the moniker. We are in the sabermetric era which is why a Kingsbury gets an NFL job and other surprising hires. Collins has already proved himself at GT. In less than 6 months on the job we have a 23rd ranked class. Bama knows he would maintain the recruiting advantage they have.

If Collins is successful, wins the ACC several times, and plays for and perhaps wins a Natty at GT, of course every team comes after him
By that time, someone else will be in their fifth year at Bama. Time is not on Collins side. I bet Satan retires before 2022.

Alabama will have their pick. I doubt their fan base would put up with someone without uber credentials. I also doubt Dabo would accept. Why subject yourself to that kind of pressure when you have a dream job in an easy conference. And Kirby is a UGA grad.... IMHO Saban's successor will come from somewhere else.

I think there is only one coach Bama would go after and there is no limit to how much they would be willing to offer to get Dabo. I wouldn't be surprised to see a $150M+ 10 year contract offer. I know Dabo absolutely loves Clemson but every man has his price plus he played for Bama.
Dabo aint leavin Clemson

Only way Bama goes after Collins is if he has titles.

If Saban retired at the end of this year, and Dabo and Kirby said no, who would they hire?
I think they would turn to the best young coaches - Lincoln Riley would get a look. If Minnesota continues to improve and goes to a Big 10 title game, P J Fleck will be a hot commodity. Josh Heupel merits consideration if UCF continues to win ten games or more each year. I am not sure anyone in the NFL would excite the Bama fan base. But, after Dabo, any replacement to Saban will be a step down for Alabama.

Dabo's future market cap is almost entirely dependent on who he replaces Venables with when the time comes. Datboy has been riding quite high on the shoulders of Brent for awhile.

Jus wanna remind you gys packing CGC off to Bama that he talked Brent Key into a lateral move here from there.

Geoff wants to be the Bobby Cremins of GT football, except for the tearful mistake of leaving.

Tom Herman would get a pretty good look
If he is successful at UT, it is a bigger job than Bama.

He also has roots there, with a masters at UT and prior coaching there. He has no connection to Bama. Generally speaking, a dude that names his son "Maverick" is not the best candidate to move to Bumfck, Alabama.

I think Riley will have a pro gig soon enough, and be too happy getting his NFL pension to go back to the recruiting grind.

My ideal scenario would be for them to go after the Samford boy Jimbo Fisher right before anyone outside realizes he burns all his ATM bridges. The Bama alums say, "Hey! The Bear came from ATM!" ATM craters cuz that is what Fisher leaves, and Bama falls from grace as if they were coached by a modern day Mike DuBose or Mike Shula. That would be pretty tasty.

I was listening to Finebaum yesterday (I know, I know) and he briefly mentioned Collins as a potential Saban replacement at Alabama along with Kirby and Pruitt. Obviously, that's a long shot, but the fact that he's even in that conversation is pretty astounding.

Thoughts?
After the Curry hire, I can’t imagine them going for another coach from GT.

I think Saban will retire before Collins’ resume is good enough for Bama.
Found this article on Saban's contract - one thing I noticed:
  • Retention bonus: $400,000 at end of 2017, 2018, 2022, 2023, 2024 seasons; $800,000 at end of 2019, 2020 seasons; $3,600,000 at end of 2021 season
Will be interesting to see how things stand come February 2021.
