Way more often than 50%, aggression is going to beat passivity. Tenuta got burned for 70 yard TD passes here and there, but Roof got burned for seven 10 yard passes instead.
Go look at Tenuta's career, not just the few years he had with Chan Gailey and tell me how great he is again. Never thought of it before now; but Chan must have been an underappreciated part of Tenuta's success when he was here. As much as it has to chafe a lot of GT fans, Ted Roof has been a far more successful coach than Tenuta and has more respect across the country as a DC. All that is more a statement about how Tenuta's career has looked since he left than how great Roof is.

Try to relax, Coach. Those Vanderbilt DBs need all your energy focused on bending and breaking.

Vanderbilt? Oh yeah, another program that could have hired Tenuta as a DC but decided to look elsewhere.

Hard to make an appropriate comparison. Different talent levels to work with. Glad we have neither now? There are lots of DCs in the world.

Tenuta being a colossal a-hole and roof being a good guy probably plays into this.

Yes, I don't know how anyone could look at Tenuta's defenses at GT and Roof's defenses at GT and decide Roof would be the better hire. I'd say more likely it is Tenuta being an abrasive personality. Head coaches are probably afraid to hire Tenuta because he might become the boss of the team

Actually if you look at their total history Roof has probably accomplished as much as a DC if not more than Tenuta. He has had some very good units over his career. Of course both have had bad seasons as well. As far as Tech goes Tenuta has much more to work with and had a HC who played that NFL style field position game to make his job easier.

Serious, you think head coaches are afraid Tenuta might take over?? The Tenuta worship on this board is still strong. It is more likely that the boring pro-style ball control offense Gailey ran when he was here made Tenuta look much better than he actually was. That coupled with the defensive talent level we had here at the time thanks to Giff Smith. If you want to bring somebody back from the Gailey years, bring back Giff Smith; look how his career has progressed compared to Tenuta's. One is a washed up safeties coach at the University of Cincinnati, the other is a respected NFL DL coach. One Gailey took with him to the NFL, the other Gailey left behind.

Tenure was pretty good here. Really wanted him to stick around and coach the defense while CPJ ran the offense. I think we would have been even more successful than we already were.

It didn’t have to be Tenuta. Any aggressive defensive scheme would have worked. The thing about Roof is that he didn’t even try. He sat back in a passive defense and got picked apart for years without ever changing anything. And that’s what doesn’t make sense and what you can’t reconcile with how he was as a player.

It wasn’t just that. When Roof WANTED to be aggressive, his defenses were the absolute worst at disguising a blitz. You could see it coming every single time.

Comparing Roof to Tenuta? Really? Apples and Oranges. Roof gave up wayyyyyy too many plays. Tenuta's D made you work for every yard and the defense knew how to blitz and penetrate the line. When did Roofs do that?

Really good QBs could pick any defense apart, Tenuta’s blitzing style too. Really crappy QBs hit 7 yard slant after 7 yard slant with defenders no where nearby in Roof’s days. That’s the point.

The point is that Tenuta without Giff Smith's DL sucks, that's the point.

Ask corndog, Matt Ryan isn't a good QB.

All you have to do is watch Morgan Burnett get the sack starting from his safety position when we played at Notre Dame to see the difference
