The Case for Thacker

With the greatest transition in football on offense, people tend to forget the transition that’s needs to happen on defense. We need an infusion of talent on the front 7 fast. Too many guys who have been playing 3 + years are making the same mistakes when they first arrived in the flats

His recruiting chops must be overrated since the young guys can’t beat out what our own fans tout as the least talented defensive unit in the conference.

Or he can’t develop and teach the proper technique so those mistakes don’t happen.

Or we’re in a year like no other and the type of development opportunity players would get is not available at this moment

The practice i attended, younger guys were getting practice reps they would typical see in a week time span. Again, let’s not act as if our defense has been avg or decent. We’ve awful defenses with some of the players being awful under 3 DCs. There is only 1 common denominator. This absolve the coaches bc they deserve a nice chunk of the blame, but the sky is falling attitude is not justified right now

I thought our defense sucks because they practice against the option.

We need to spend some money and hire factory level staff. Thacker and Burton need to go.
Actually, the reason our defense sucked was because no recruits wanted to get their legs cut practicing against the option. This is still hurting us today with our upperclassmen.

I’m taking your word for it. But how many more ass kickings do we have to take before we can honestly say the sky is falling?

The sky is falling if Thacker is still coaching past the end of this year.
I see missed assignments everywhere. If those aren't corrected by the end of the year AND Thacker is still on staff...welp the sky is falling.

What's the common denominator? That our culture has come to accept weak defensive effort? That we have so little football knowledge being transferred from upper classmen down to the younger guys because, despite the changes in coordinators, it was mostly the same position coaches until CGC's staff? At what point do we judge the ability of this staff to coach? I will say, I see improved technique on the defensive line and just don't think we've got the players there yet.

Is the solution to this treating every position on the field like the TE position and taking good (not necessarily great) transfers where we can get them? The old guys that came in to play TE for a year were solid in setting a culture and a standard for that position. Do we need to act like LB didn’t exist at Tech and get some guys in with solid fundamentals and attitudes to come set the LB culture?

The weakness on the D line and at LB has completely exposed what should have been a strength in the secondary. Also think our safeties have regressed... Tariq was injured in the off-season and put on too much weight and Juanyeh, I'm not sure what the deal is there. Could be trying too hard to cover for everybody else, not focused, I'm not sure. Missing Tre Swilling hurt for awhile. I just think the secondary can't cover forever and QBs have plenty of time to sit back and make throws.

And yes @savbandjacket we are looking for transfers at DT and LB.

And that's not to absolve the coaching. Jumping offsides on that obvious draw them offsides play, constantly missing assignments, terrible angles, etc. All on coaching. I do think Thacker is in over his head and Collins need to take a bigger role in the defense as a whole.

The thing I worry about the secondary is if they aren't listening to the coaches or have given up on trying. Seeing the past few games and hearing from the post-game last week that they aren't really sticking to their assignments (what I remember, but could of gotten it wrong), not really sure whats going on back there.

BC really exposed our weakness in the middle right from the jump. First run of the game they blew us 5 yards off the ball, just using their big OL and TEs and RBs to man handle us.

We have 0 talent at DT. We are starting a walkon and a 5’11 265 pound DT. I’m honestly not sure why Griffin gets so much action in a game like this.

also not sure why we sit in a Nickle D the entire game when BC is running straight at us.

We can’t chalk up our failures to talent when we’re losing to Syracuse and getting assblasted by Boston College. We have at least as much talent as both of those teams, and recruiting rankings suggest that we have significantly more.

Our guys look like they don’t know what they’re doing, and they pretty consistently make stupid mistakes. Ultimately it all falls on Collins, so it’s up to him to figure out what’s causing the problems and fix it.
The coaching staff has been fairly honest in describing that last year and this year would be written off in favor of developing for the future. Perhaps that is what is going on. We are not going to worry about W's and L's until next year. The present is for development.

What I'm seeing the last two games that I never saw last year was a 'dropping of the rope' on defensive effort.

Of all the problems we can see out there, this one is the most disturbing. I just don't see the fire and don't-quit attitude I saw last season.
