2021 Recruiting

All this speculation about a freshman kid's homesickness is kinda.....I dunno. I mean, he is unhappy; times are tough for a lot of people and all these fans are either freaking out or practically salivating. Not that I won't participate in the speculation if he does hit the portal and we look like a legit option, mind you.

To be clear, I am not really referring to our daydreaming about a player like him coming here. But you read some of the stuff on that LSU board with the armchair psychiatry and it's kind of icky.

Or maybe he realized he was in Baton Rouge and that LSU, academically, was practically bankrupt a few years ago. You have shiny GT with its healthy academic endowment in the capital of the south and you want to waste your time in Baton ööööing Rouge?

Wonder what the poster is on to saying promises weren’t kept and that’s the real reason
Reading between the lines written by people I do not know, it seems it is a position thing.

LSU wants him to fight in the trenches blocking for the run and catch a few balls, while we want him to move around and be Calvin Johnson.

And you can add current version Darren Waller in as well as far as size and utilization. The Raiders use him all over the formation. I remember a game Tony Romo called and he was blown away they used him on a Jet Sweep.

I bet Waller's name gets used once we can contact him.

(Bet it has already by unofficial non-go-between go-betweens.)

I’m fine using Waller’s name b/c whatever works... but name dropping a guy we used as a wideout in a spread option 6 years ago to convince an elite TE to come here is a stretch. Tyler Davis going from no-name to draft pick is probably a better (less sexy) sell.

Yes but he can also tell him about the benefits of the institution outside of football and also that you will have just as much of a spotlight here.

You mean a current pro star who is part of a revolution in the position is too dated for you?

Gilbert is not worried about being drafted. Davis is not his comp, at least in Arik's mind. Waller, Kittle, Kelce are.

But downblocking all game in LSU's offense while the airballs flow to wideouts is not how he wants to spend his NFL prep time.

I mean it’s not about being dated it’s that he didn’t even play TE here man. Waller represents talent identification on our part (but different staff so that’s not really applicable here either). He doesn’t really represent TE development for Tech. Gilbert doesn’t need talent identification. The whole country has already identified that.

And I say again if it works then cool. Get them in the same room and use it. But if I’m Gilbert then a different Tech staff having graduated an option WR who went on to become and elite TE down the line after learning the position in the pros doesn’t do much for me.

Two examples of why you might be wrong(respectfully) are Coach Choice and Coach Coleman. Both from different eras but they still can sell their success.

I think we'd use any recent success by Jackets in the pros, but ultimately, the guys who come here say it is the culture and the coaches rather than any tangible thing you can point to.

and Atlanta has a loop!

Those BTR guys are always griping about traffic

An aside. Which GT tight end who caught less than 10 passes at Tech had the longest career in the NFL as a TE?

This doesn’t apply to the topic at all unless Waller were to retire and return to coach Gilbert.
