Blah blah SEC is taking over!

What really happened: the two best schools from a dead conference took their best option and kept their identity and historical rivals. It was completely symbiotic. 99% of these other ideas provide no benefit to any other conference.

The best thing for college football is not to have ESPN dominating rights. There needs to be some competition. With the issues at Disney/ABC/ESPN over financials wouldn't surprise me to see ESPN really try to start lowballing TV rights renewals.

Your comments about SEC rescuing the ACC are Polyannaesque. The ACC schools would have to bend the knee and take lower shares of payouts to get in. And UGAy would not let us in anyway.

It looked like Fox might challenge ESPN. Unfortunately Fox seems to have abandoned that strategy.

I'm just talking out my ass, but I'm guessing peak revenue foe Disney on these deals has already passed and will continue to decrease. Fox, im sure could see a bidding war driving up costs would not have been a good financial decision, unless they did it simply to drive up espns cost with no intention of actually signing deals

So if the B1G, Pac 12 and ACC wanted to check the power of the SEC, one way they can fight back is to limit the BCS playoff to 4 teams.....with the 4 teams being the 4 conference champions. I believe they have the power to dictate BCS rules. No more double dipping by the SEC (or the ACC last year). Complete the breakup of the Big 12 (which helps ESPN) by distributing them as such:
B1G = Kansas and Iowa State
ACC = Notre Dame and West Virginia
Pac12 = Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, OK State

Then after a couple of seasons of only 4 teams in the BCS, negotiate an expansion to 8-12 teams where the selection criteria eliminates SEC bias.

This is why I think the B1G is the best bet for us. Neither the ACC nor the B1G can match the SEC right now independently, but if we merged it would be a different story.

Logical structure, go to P4 with three working together as needed to reign in the SEC.
Conference championship games essentially give you an 8 team playoff. You get in by winning your conference division.
So presumably ND would finally be forced into the ACC to access the playoffs.
I read where the SEC move angered (non sec) university presidents, triggering a lot of cooperative discussion among them about offsetting strategies.
Of course that means big 12 is toast, probably the case regardless.
Ok this structure discussion is one thing, but imagine millionaires playing college football?

I like the 8 team, division champions getting in the playoffs idea.
I feel bad for the UCF, Cinci, Houston, BYU, Boise crowd, but if we don't fight back against what the SEC is trying to pull off, we might get left in the dust.
Going to 12 teams with a limit of 3 teams from one conference might work. The P4 conference champions get a bye, 4 more slots from conference championship game losers, 4 at-large, with a max of 1 per P4 conference, min of 0.

Let the people in the SEC have a free hand to do whatever they want to do. If nobody interferes with them, they will over play their hand and make a big mistake. That is what arrogant people always do.

Let them add USC, Ohio State, Clemson and FSU, along with Texas and Oklahoma. That will not last long, since most of them will end up with mediocre records and find that intolerable.

That breakup will take years to happen. In the meantime, everyone else gets choked either out of existence or relegated to division 3 due to funding issues.
