I believe the original mistake was firing Gailey. He had gotten a good pipeline of talent coming in and while nonfans were screaming “mediocrity” and frothing at the mouth over 7 wins I believe Chan was poised to make a run with his ‘07 recruiting class.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the 3o and PJ but in retrospect I believe we would have been better with him.

Without the booster fueled pipeline of talent rolling in like at UGa, bama and Clemson, Tech is far more dependent on the coach to get the relationships and contacts required to successfully recruit, so I understand TStan’s reasoning. I thing the staff isn’t as bad as they seem due to pretty much zero depth in the trenches and little depth elsewhere except for running back.

But that’s not to say I have a lot of confidence in the staff, I just think we need to stay the course for next year, with the probable exception is DC

It’s almost as if they should have kept CPJ and CNW and opened the wallet to improve recruiting, culture-building, branding, and facilities. Had the AD been proactive and initiated this himself, perhaps PJ could have deferred retirement a few more years and kept the program winning at least 7-8 a year. For one hundredth million time, spending more Money on Recruiting with CPJ & CNW would not have yielded better Recruits.

Recruits are the customer, the customer didn't want the product CPJ was selling, no matter how much we spent on Recruiting, they weren't buying.

Spending more money on those things above with CPJ would not have yielded any significant improvement in Recruiting.

Just maybe CPJ quit because he saw up close what was coming back and what was in his immediate future had he kept Coaching GT FB, maybe CPJ knew that if he had come back maybe we slip to 5 wins per season under him.

Very few College Coaches leave or quit when they know a loaded roster is coming back, going to the NFL or a bigger College Job is the exception.

I agree. But the trenches do not explain safeties and cornerbacks that are routinely 10-20 yds away from where they are supposed to be in zone coverage.

Maybe CPJ retired because people were in the stands with signs calling him a clown yet the team was still over 500 and going to bowl games. You can't say a bigger recruiting staff wouldn't have yielded better players. Also a bigger staff budget would have helped hire better defensive coordinators. GT spent next to last in the ACC on football. Yet CPJ still had the 4th best coaching win percentage at GT.

Perhaps you are right. I don’t doubt that CPJ assessed the current recruiting situation and college football landscape, and that played a big part in his decision to move on when he did. Maybe he was a curmudgeon just too stubborn to adjust this offensive philosophy (though I recall him experimenting with different looks when Vad Lee was here). I remember reading somewhere that he reached out to the AD for more resources, but perhaps this was just an internet rumor. However had TStan, and especially MBob before him, given him more support, it’s also possible we could have seen more seasons like 2014 and a floor of 7 wins per year.

At any rate, as piss-poor as our current coaching staff has performed, I have a hard time believing that CPJ would have lost more than 5-6 games this year let alone had three consecutive three win seasons. The in-game decisions/adjustments and better defensive communication alone would probably have good for 3-4 more wins this year. But as I said it’s all water under the bridge, and at least we’re playing “big boy” football now, amirite?

I think I counted 8 times he said he 'loved' his players. I've never heard any coach use this type of talk in relation to a team. Sure once or twice a coach may say something like that, but good Lord this borders, to me, a little strange.

The 3O combined with cut blocking is hard to prepare for because Defenses hate low blocks and the potential for injury lowering their value to the NFL, so we would have done enough to win 5-6 games, but remember the changes in blocking for our A-backs & WRs would have made it harder for CPJ to maintain 7-8 win seasons.

My only point is that we can't be sure we stay at 7-8 wins if CPJ doesn't retire.

Collins is about the SOFTEST football coach I’ve ever seen. This is what you have to say after losing to your instate rival? Did he really say “numero uno”? No wonder our players play like they do. Watching #77 allow a UGA defender to have a free run at his QB and then crying to the ref tells me all I need to know about our culture. SOFT. I’ll be honest, if I were in a street fight there are only 2 GT players I’d want on my side - Charlie Thomas and JP Mason. The rest would either be hurt and couldn’t help me or are too soft to be any use. We couldn’t even snap the ball properly. The same thing happened in year 1 game 1. Our OC just told our offense he has zero faith in them by his play calling. 3 yard routes on 3rd and long. We don’t even compete and no one holds anyone accountable. I’ve never, ever seen an offensive line as bad as ours. We literally don’t even block the guy lined up in front of them. And then our DB’s get lit up by a freshmen. No pride and no accountability.

You make a good point about the blocking rule change (and perhaps this too factored into CPJ’s decision to retire).

I also certainly agree about better blocking a better secondary play being worth four more wins. That’s why I contend that CPJ/CNW would have done much better than this current coaching staff with these current players because they were just better game day coaches in general. Of course our current staff has set the bar so low, that hopefully we can find some new guys soon that can lead to improvement in these areas.

Dumbass. PJ had a budget less than Ga State. There’s only so much our staff could do at the time. And to GC’s credit, there’s only so much his staff can do.

But you really don’t know what would happen if we put the dollars under PJ that we put under GC.
