Official GT Head Coach News Thread

I guess all the other threads are locked so I will try putting this here...

I really don't understand the people here that don't think Fritz is a good hire. This guy has turned TULANE into a top 20 program playing for a conference championship. TULANE would likely kick the dog sh*t out of Tech this year. TULANE. In between dodging actual hurricanes and other disasters, he has become the 5th winningest coach in their history... in less than 8 years. That's how thirsty TULANE is.

They are 10-2. You know how many 10 win seasons TULANE has had in their entire history? 2. Only twice EVER in their entire history. Tommy Bowden in 1998 and Ted Cox 1934. This guy has taken a dumpster fire of a program and has them playing for a championship. He's a miracle worker.

It's as if some of you still want a snake oil salesman. Someone who talks on an ELITE level. You go from one quack to another that promises you salvation. Someone that can say all the right things, look the right way, dance the right dance and you just pass right over an actual miracle worker who has proven he can win in the shadow of the valley of death. God I hope this hire goes to completion. Give this man some time and he will have Tech kicking ass in one of the weakest conferences in FBS, the ACC. Willie Fritz is not the hero Georgia Tech deserves but the one Georgia Tech needs.

Batt is a new AD who has to make up for his youth and lack of experience by running a by the books coaching search. This means formal interviews with all parties and a consensus approach at the top (Batt and Cabrera) on who to go after.

The "new" candidate interview could very well be Key. You would not want to have caused distraction before COFH with this. Also he has earned the opportunity to formally express why he would be the best candidate for the position.

I think all parties (Chadwell, Fritz and Key) are still in play this morning.

Batt should have been doing that weeks ago. Every day that passes now brings us closer to early signing and further behind in transfer portal recruiting.
What if after he found the coffee, he built his wish list, had the background stuff initiated, tweaked the list over the coming weeks, sent out feelers to agents, revised it based on feedback (meanwhile we're showing signs of life week-to-week), set up a round of interviews, accepted interest from other coaches reaching out, did the background stuff on them, set up more interviews, tweaked the list, and now we're into this week where it could be a mix of intro interviews and round 2 interviews?

You make it seem like Batt has just been wandering around looking for coffee the past few weeks. I don't have a reason to believe that to be the case.

Not sure I buy your reasoning. Given the importance of time in coaching hires for recruiting, it would be pretty bad to have waited until now to have interviewed Key. Also wasn't there reporting before that Key was under consideration?

That's a nice block of text you have there making an argument. Let me try to come up with a counterpoint:

Willie Fritz won less games than Geoff Collins did last year, has a losing record overall in 7 years at Tulane, and made hay at Georgia Southern off the back of Dell McGee's recruiting.

And he won more games this year than Collins did his entire time at Tech.

I always got the impression Monken would move to the NFL when he got the call. I’m not sure why a UGA coordinator would take the GT job. Talk about going from a job with an embarrassment of riches to one that takes a lot of fighting to get things going. Constant fights with the hill over $$$ and academics, a small fraction of recruiting budget, and you have to face off against your old team + Clemson every year. I don’t see it, but I don’t have ears on the inside either.

Because we are still a head coaching position in a power 5 conference. And those guys have established recruiting connections in the correct areas to succeed here in recruiting.

I am taking a "literal" read into Pete Thamel's post. As of last Tuesday it was my understanding Key had not yet had the opportunity to put the necktie on and sit across the table from Batt and explain his future vision. Maybe some other sources can confirm if this conversation has happened.

^^^ What Scion said with respect to Todd Monken.

Success at UGA does not mean a coordinator would be successful at GT. Does he have a history of winning at programs/teams that are not loaded with talent?

I would argue JEFF Monken would be a better fit at GT for that exact reason. (To be clear, I am NOT advocating for a Jeff Monken hire. Just making a point.)

One thing to note is that last year was the only year they had the particular set of coordinators they had. They fired their DC and their OC was Chip Long, who got hired to here. A black eye in the sense that he can't mess up coordinator hires that bad here, but perhaps not very representative.

Someone literally wrote this with the single purpose of getting "WTF" clicks. They know dick and this is bait and whoever is responsible is forgetting to do something very, very important. öööö people who make trash like this, you are a latecomer to the vile party of marketing and money-worship that is college football.
It’s not even a prediction based on info. It’s a “what Tech should do” post.
