Jaybo Shaw

Jaybo did a great job for a freshman last year. He took us to victories in two games he started, held on against FSU and got us a much needed first down against UGA.

It wasn't always pretty but you just can't ask for any more for a freshman backup.

Whoa!!!! Great ... not quite. Good ...I'll give you that. You're correct that it wasn't pretty, but he did get the job done for the most part.

BUT, as far as "holding on against FSU"....I'm not sure which game you watched but that wasn't the case. He nearly handed the game to them. (Fumble and AWFUL and I MEAN AWFUL underthrown interception)

If you want to give out credit for the FSU and UGA games...FSU goes to the Defense and Roddy White gets a lot for his heroics during the UGA game...tight ropin' and divin'

Jaybo is a good kid, athlete etc....however as the systems grows and more come into it...he'll lose a lot of playing time.

When the playbook gets opened up for the PASS...he'll be a memory because he can barely heave it 45 yds down field....and that's where athleticism and abilities of the other incoming players and Nesbitt will out shine.

Again, I like Jaybo and am glad he's on the squad, but he did his job......but it wasn't miraculous. It was Duke and MSU....let's keep it real.

Gee .... you think?

That's almost like saying that without gas my car won't run!!!

You're probably right....but you're missing the point. I'm saying that although the kid was our back up....he wasn't this "unbelievable talent" that is flying under the radar.

Quite honestly, how do we know that we couldn't won without Booker???

People forget that MSU and Duke are Division 1 football programs from BCS conferences. He's 2-0 against Div 1 BCS teams as a starter. He did a good job for us.

To be fair, you can't blame Jaybo for the fumble. He was blindsided by an unblocked defender just as he was about to pitch the ball.

Poorly thown pass, sure 'nuff.

I don't get and I never will get all the neg comments about Jaybo.

I understand he's not going to torch the recordbooks but he's a tough, hardworking backup quarterback who does what the coaches ask of him. He plays with enthusiasm and is not afraid of contact.

Is there something else he's supposed to be?

I get it a lot more when we put starters under the spotlight but backups?

I agree with you, and I've been one of the folks talking about him. I guess he's just under the spotlight and scrutiny more because he gets more playing time. I'm happy to have him as a backup.

I would have said the exact same thing about Goose when he came in after Joe got hurt. After that, I gave up on evaluating back-up QB's.

I actually do think he torched some records for "GT freshman QBs in their first start" last year.

Goose was my number 1 Georgia Tech surprise player when when he ran the offense the way he did. He never really did throw it very well (from a text book standpoint), could not run very well in an offense where we ran some option following a QB that could run and he did well, even better than the previous QB. It was a masterful job by him and Coach Fridge.

I think Jaybo did an incredible job last year as a true frosh. I just don't want to ever hear that he should be starting over Nesbitt. If Jaybo started all of last year we'd be lucky to win six games, and that's assuming he could make it through the season without getting hurt.

I don't get the argument over Jaybo. Nesbitt is a clear #1 in our coaches' minds. Josh is a fine QB.

Jaybo was an excellent backup last year. He understood option football. He played well when he had the whole or most of the game to play. He was spotty in some tight situations when he was in for a brief time. For a freshman, he did well for us.

He may be strong enough to hold on to the backup. Luallen or Sims may be better as freshman and he may be third string. Whatever happens, he is a good kid to have in our program who has already contributed to wins as a freshman. I like him.

I'm just glad to have Jaybo as a yellow jacket. He's a film room rat, coach's son, high character kid, and he provides excellent depth at the QB position. A player who works really, really hard to master his assignments, and works hard with strength and conditioning always has a shot at getting on the field.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Jaybo start as a senior, or start several games when the starter's out. Even if he does none of these things he's a valuable player for the depth and competition he adds.

Because Josh Nesbitt is a beast. He's very under appreciated by Tech fans in my opinion.

Since the offense developed in fits and starts last season, we are very underappreciative of three facts:

- Nesbitt is nearly a prototypical option QB.
- Dwyer is a prototypical B-Back.
- Jones is a prototypical A-Back.

A small, true freshmen was bound to underwhelm our expectations coming in for Nesbitt.

My only problem with Jaybo is I never felt comfortable when he was in the game. Every play you had to hold your breath and hope he didn't fumble. When he held on to the ball he did a more than adequate job of backing up Nesbitt. If he has learned to keep a tight grip on the ball, then I can't wait to see what he can do when called upon this year.

Without Jaybo we probably lose to MSU and Duke.

That's a ridiculous statement. Bottom line is Chan gave us such a horrid job of QB development, we don't know what a "serviceable back up QB" is because we've forgotten what a decent back up, hell decent starter for that matter, plays like.

Jaybo for a true freshman did an admirable job in a new offense under a new coach. But as a serviceable backup, I'd give him a C+ overall. i expect a serviceable backup to be able to not lose games we should win, and I expect him to maybe win us a game that ought to be competitive.

Its nice to have anyone that at least can go in and keep things together against sub par teams. In the past if our starting QB went out, we'd lose a game we should have won. Not the case with Jaybo. But at the sametime, against a competitive team, Jaybo's play was suspect.
