I just got a text message from some friends in Birmingham. They were attending a dinner in which Nick Saban was speaking. According to Saban, the series with Bama in 2013 and 2014 is probably going to be canceled. According to him, WE are the ones trying to break the contract.

Has anyone in the know heard about this?

Least surprising thing ever. Although it would be surprising(and disappointing) if we were the ones doing it.

could this be something about us changing conferences?!? hmmmm.

No way would GT be the one's doing it. Paul Johnson would not agree to that, he'd play any team, any time.

I would hate it if this were true, I have been looking forward to this series since I heard about it.

I highly, highly doubt that. I still think the majority of these conference changes are never going to happen. Quoting Saban, "Georgia Tech asked to be removed."

I think you're confusing Paul Johnson with the dude from Fresno State. This isn't too surprising given Radakovich's past comments on OOC scheduling. Still, I was looking forward to it too, and this sucks if true. When you play in the ACC, an interesting OOC schedule is almost a necessity.

I want to go to SEC style scheduling. 3 cupcakes to go with UGA. Let's try to win a ring. There is no reward for tough scheduling. NONE. The ACC schedules tough games and get killed when our teams lose. SEC schedules no one is lauded for its great records.

We know the rules of the game. Play the game by the rules. You can't win chess playing with checkers rules.

Um, Dan's said he likes to have an SEC or Big East team (other than the mutts) on the schedule every year. He also wants them to be close by so that they can help fill our stadium and our fans can go to the game. UA fits that profile perfectly.

If we're trying to get out of this game (and that's a big if in my book), it's probably because we've got another season with three SEC opponents coming up in 2013. Dan doesn't like that, and Vandy owes us the game that year.

Yeah Dan is interested in playing SEC teams, as long as they're from Nashville or the state of Mississippi. What I think is going on here is Dan sees a guaranteed loss and is working to remove it. Spin it however you want. After all, who would have guessed a couple of years ago that Bama would be back to the top this fast.

Maybe Dan can work his magic and switch this out for a powerhouse big east team like Syracuse or Rutgers.

But a out of conference loss isn't going to do anything to us BCS-wise unless we are competing for a NC. Even then, as long as Bama is good, it won't hurt that much. VT was still in the NC talk this year until they lost to us.

These aren't the days of Chan where were are squeaking into the blue turf bowl.

Good chance that Saban is long gone from Alabama by then, not too mention some sort of probation.

I imagine one of you will email Dan. I will return to read that.

You're ruining the whole purpose of the thread. There are so many reasons for a series to be canceled, and very few of them have to deal with "being scared." Considering our unique offense, I would suspect it's actually Bama who is asking out. Are they a better team right now? Absolutely. Does that mean they want to change everything to prepare for a completely new offense for a week? Probably not. There could be a host of monetary or contractual reasons for US to ask out of the series as well. Your post adds nothing concrete to the discussion.

Also, a certain team in Athens has been having a lot of problems with teams from Nashville lately. And, of course, let's not forget that famous "Blackout" in Athens. I was lucky enough to catch that game with my family. The curse words all the Georgia fans shouted at my mother and little sister really showed class.

If you're not a Georgia fan, I apologize for the insinuation. It's been thrown around on the board, and I'm usually not one to get into that sort of thing. But, as a Bama fan in my youth and a GT fan and double-grad now, I'm especially anxious to find out what's going on. Again, I apologize if my response came off as callous.

Syracuse actually IS on the schedule in the next five or six years. I think OOC games among teams in BCS conferences are fun regardless of the opponent.

Mel is a mutt fan, he never responds when someone points this fact out so that just further shows his true nature. No apologies.

I hope this was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek

edit, reading further in the thread I see it was a dig rather than a good faith comment

I'd be disappointed if this were true. Hell, this season's home schedule sux. I love GT and somewhat justify continuing buying tix based on who we have coming up. Honestly, if we start to schedule like Bama's last year (FIU, UTC, North Texas) I will eventually just stop coming. I don't pay to see the worst teams in CFB come to town.
