Vad Lee will get chance to compete

Two things:

1. PJ has shown a willingness to put a true FR QB on the 2-deep. Our example is Jaybo Shaw. However, this was done because there just wasn't another option QB on the roster. Our example is Calvin Booker. It was required that Shaw be the backup that season.

2. It is likely that a good deal of our QB woes are being caused by inconsistent OL play this spring. I would conjecture that we'll see improved QB play this August when we stop experimenting with and having to patch up the OL.

Botom line: Lee will be given the chance to show his stuff in August, but the overwhelming probability is he will RS. That would be the best thing for our program.

1) Jaybo played as a TF because we didn't have anyone else and he'd run a similar offense before. We've got Days and Sims, who are infinitely more suited to run the TO than Booker (see Gardner Webb) AND Vad has no experience running our system. Apples to oranges.

2) I haven't seen a whole lot of complaints on TW this spring. Nothing that proclaims him as the second coming of Joe Hamilton, but nothing too negative either.

1. Yes. this was my point, though PJ has shown he will do it in a pinch. Still not very probable that Lee will break the 2-deep this fall. But... stranger things have happened.

2. Yes again. But the info that he has improved, but not in any major way, is disconcerting for those who saw us drop 4 of our last 5 games in 2010 under TW. We only beat Dook after JN went down, and that was a tough win. This hardly inspires confidence in the incumbent QB, who has shown he can run the offense, but needs to show he can win.

FWIW, I'm all for giving him the chance. However, PJ's rope is shorter than most due to lingering skepticism about his O. Honestly, I'm not sure he can survive another year like last year and keep the home base happy with his system. Not saying he'd get fired, just that he'd create a lot of serious perception problems if that happened - problems with media, fans and recruits. That would be bad. He needs to have a very good year in 2011.

It is not about effort. It is all about performance and getting the job done.

It's called life.

How many spring practices have you been to? How are you qualified to make an assessment of Days' performance?

Dumbass questions. I can't form opinions or reach conclusions from reports of those who did attend the scrimmages or have seen the practices?

In reality, upon arrival Lee will be deprogrammed and reprogrammed by Bohannon and staff. Everything he thought he ever knew will be wrong, changed, modified, deleted or tweaked. The game will go from easily running away from Bob the part-time tuba player in high school to getting religiously squeaked like dog toy by Julian Burnett and crew. But he will learn and get better and better. The coaching staff has way too much to be concerned about just trying to get ready to play their first game without focusing all their attention on a blank slate. His day will come but barring a direct meteor hit on Washngton and Days, I don't see it happening this season.

LOL. Well said. Would one of those doing the squeeking be one DD?

BTW, I've always thought that DD could be a potential NFL player at MLB. I'm excited to see what can happen here.

Something like Gruden's QB Camp except for kids coming out of high school and more motivational encouragement.

Not if those people wouldnt know what the he'll they're looking at. This includes every poster on this board, and every newspaper writer. So unless you got word directly from Paul Johnson or someone on staff, no.

It's a teleconference. Somebody probably asked CPJ about Vad Lee. He responded with coach-speak: He'll get a chance to compete. We're excited about him.

This is the best response I've read in this thread. After last years motivational issues, CPJ is pulling out all the stops in motivating his players. This is a direct challenge to TW and SD to get it in high gear this summer. Coach is using the threat of Lee as a means of motivating these guys.

My guess is that Days wasn't close enough to Tevin at the end of spring to really make Tevin sweat all summer. (although all I've heard about Tevin is that he is a work-aholic.) This is a little more fuel on the fire.

I love it!

I might get flamed for this, but I would really hate to burn Vad's redshirt for a backup role. If he does not win the starting job then he should redshirt IMO.
At Lunch Bunch, Coach Johnson said Vad fully believes right now that he's going to start this fall. He then said words to the effect that Vad's in for a surprise.

Odds are he won't be. Though, if the kid comes in and just blows everyone out of the wate, I'd be cool with that.

I think the fact that Days took some snaps with the first team O in last Saturday's scrimmage tells me all I need to know about where the competition is heading. Will Days' play with the 2's this Saturday? Yes. But the gap between he and Tevin is not that great.

Days did not make the best of his opportunity but the coaches gave him an opportunity. I think they want Days to win the job but they are not going to give it to him, he has to take it. I really wish they would switch the Qb's on Saturday at halftime. Let Washington go with the 1's the first half and Days the go with them the second half.

I do think Vad should redshirt. Talent alone is nothing without experience and understanding the system and capabilities of players. IMO, best way to do that is to redshirt QBs.

But, in the end, I don't care who the QB is (it can be Vad, Tevin, Synjyn, Days or a walk-on), as long as the offense is executed properly to CPJ's satisfaction.

First, I don't know how anyone can credibly blame Tevin for losing those games. VT sure, but he was a backup coming in for the first time in a real game on the road in one of the most intimidating environments in the ACC (and maybe even in college football). He did an admirable job in leading us to nearly two game tying drives in the last 5 minutes.

Miami we got our clocks cleaned. But Tevin had 122 yards rushing and a pretty stout average. He had a nice TD pass to bring us within 14-10 early in the 3rd quarter. After Miami responded with a 79 yard pass, Tevin led us right back to Miami's 6 yard line before Orwin lost the ball. After Miami made it 28-10 going into the fourth we had to change up our game plan on offensive to score 18 points in a quarter. If Orwin doesn't fumble and our D bows up starting with 12 minutes left in the third, we're likely down 21-17 or 24-17 in the 4th with the ball. Neither of those can be laid on Tevin.

Likewise, against UGA we threw up 5 TDs. Had Orwin not fumbled our first possession, we probably win. Had our defense not gotten thrashed for a 66 yard TD by Durham or a 32 yard TD by Charles the next possession, we probably win. If our defense stands tall with 2 minutes left in the first half, we probably win. If Roddy doesn't fumble with 10 minutes left in the third, we probably win. If Roddy doesn't miss the pitch at the end of the third quarter, we probably win.

Again, that loss has very little to do with Tevin.

Tevin did have a hand in the Air Force loss, but really you expect more out of Allen against a D like Air Force's. A 3.8 ypc average just isn't good enough.

Second, PJ's rope is shorter than most? Lingering skepticism about his O? Where can I get what you are smoking?!?!?! Yeah the passing game is terrible, but that's not CPJs offense, that's not having a QB who can throw and a WR who can catch. I think that problem will get solved.

Regardless, we had the best rushing attack last year and the number five or six yards per rush in the country. Up there with Oregon and Auburn. You know, those two teams that played for all the marbles. Maybe you have a short memory, but we struggled on defense last year because we switched defensive systems. You know, we fired the old guy because he wasn't any good, even though we won our conference. CPJ wouldn't settle for Wommack. That change comes with some growing pains, which you saw last year.

As for the offense, well, the results speak for themselves. We were fifth in the ACC last year in scoring, the stat that counts. We were first the year before. Fourth the year before that. Under Gailey we were no BETTER than fifth, and that was with a cupboard loaded with Calvin and Tashard. Most years with Gailey we were at the bottom of the ACC, putting up less than 20 points a game. Gailey lasted at GT for six years, even though he only won more than 7 games ONCE and never won the ACCCG. CPJ has already bested each of those stats in only three years. The thought that he somehow has a short leash or on the hot seat because he went 6-7 after going 11-3 is nothing short of ridiculous.

Football is a bottom-line business. The bottom line is we lost 4 out of the 5 games Tevin started, plus the VPI game (which we led when he walked on the field). 3 of those 4 games were very winnable. It's not all his fault, for sure, and I'm not laying that on him at all. It's a team sport. The D is culpable, too. However, he's the QB and the general of the O, so he gets more scrutiny, fair or not.

Now there could be a debate over whether or not we win any of those lost games even with JN under center. But that's all hypothetical, he was not under center.

My sole point is not to throw TW under the bus. My point is that a returning QB who is 1-4 in 4.5 games as the #1 QB, who is reportedly improved only a bit, is not going to incite a lot of confidence in the fan base. That is all.

People wonder why TW is not getting the love, and that is why, IMO.

Before the season started I thought Vad would surely redshirt.

But after seeing what the Spring had so show and thinking about it more, I think it is likely that either Tevin or Synjin misses a game or two due to injury. I think the might be enough to warrant burning Vad's redshirt if he's needed in a game.

There is no way Vad starts at the beginning of the season, but I think his redshirt will be burned.

For all you haters who thought we would slap a redshirt on Vad and call it a year, PJ had this to say:

He said incoming freshman Vad Lee will have a chance to compete at quarterback in the fall. He said the keys will be how quickly he can adjust to the speed of the college game and to the higher level of talent.
“We’re definitely excited about him,” he said.

Our QB play this spring must have really left something to be desired. We know Tevin isn't the answer and Sinjyn must not have impressed.

Look for Vad to crack the two deep a few games into the season and then see live action.

Unlike you, there are many that don't know Tevin isn't the answer. He played really well for the situation he was put in. Bet he looked better his first spring as starter the JN did.

Also bet CPJ knows a lot more than anyone here about it.

These are way too many facts and logic for this crowd. Most of the posters here go from predicting national championships one week to blaming CPJ and the TO for a certain winless season the next.

As Bobby Dodd always told us, the only stat that counts is the one at the end of season - how many did you win vs how many you lost!
