Stephen Hill just declared for the NFL draft.

OK. What will you say if, in 2013, the team doesn't perform like you expected? Will you call for CPJ's head? Remember that, potentially, Tech could have a QB starting his first college game ever that season, and, the schedule for 2013 and 2014 will be the toughest possible ACC schedule in the conference, with FSU in the rotation those two years. Would you be willing to fire a good coach after one year with a new QB? To me, at that point, there is too much potential in the future with the development of VL and JT at QB, an even more experienced OL the next year, an ever-improving defense, and improvement in the quality of the recruiting classes to scrap everything and start over. Overall, I think we agree in principle; we just disagree on the amount of patience we are willing to show. Thanks for the discussion.

What did you say about Chan when he had just had his best recruiting class, Reggie Ball was gone, and we were only one year removed from the ACCCG? I'm rooting for him, but if 2013 is a repeat of 2010, he'll be gone. We would have paid off Gailey by then and would only have a couple of years left on Hewitt. I'm rooting for CPJ to get it right, but the program has regressed since the Gailey recruits ran out. Unlike AE87's assertion, I'm not calling for his firing yet, but next year is all his recruits and the following one gives him Seniors that he recruited with a full recruiting season under his belt.

For the most part, we're on the same page, but doubt has started to creep in my mind. Maybe Vad Lee or someone will change it, but I'm starting to be a little apprehensive. However, I will still root for GT come hell or high water.

Depends on how we are playing. You can be a very good team and still lose a big game. What I want to see is a team that isn't being outmatched struggling to hang on and hit some big plays. I think we will get there, but I'm not going to make any statements about how I will react to any hypothetical situation. I'll have to see where we are.

Oh, and I don't care about where we play who. Our schedule is our schedule. We can't make excuses in advance or assume we won't compete in a given year because of where we play. Somehow it doesn't seem to bother VT so it shouldn't bother us.

If TechPreacher even knew how much we argue in the dungeon, but agree on this. To me the key is the lines being able to compete. We'll get good enough skilled players on offense at least.

Regressed from the Johnson coached best Gailey class of recruits. But at 5 loses, last year was a typical Gailey year. Except that we had an offense that could generate big plays, an below average defense, and probably the second öööötiest ST 2010, you still win) that I can remember.

We'll see how recruiting does in the next two years. Johnson has out performed Gailey in recruiting except for Gailey's best year. I think that class was in Gailey's 6th year. It takes time to build a pipeline, unless you're a huge state school or a dynamic recruiter. Johnson isn't a dynamic recruiter. We knew that going in.

But he came in with a lot of contacts in state from his Georgia Southern days. It should have been much easier for him to get the pipeline going. Or he should have kept Gailey's recruiting coordinator (Giff Smith I believe). Either way, does he deserve more time than Chan?

True, but those contacts we 7 years old. That is a long time in HS coach football years.

Did you see the story on our latest recruit? Paul recruited his father. High School football coaches in Georgia do not turn over that fast at the programs that consistently produce D1 players.

OK. Glad it is paying off.

Do college coached only interact with high school head coaches or do they become friendly with other coaches on a high school staff? The reason I ask is that certainly other staff coaches would go on to be head coaches.

Not only that, but even if you have contacts if everyone else is talking about how much you will fail starting off, you won't get recruits. He had to convince people we wouldn't crash and burn as a program before he could start getting anything out of what contacts he had left.

Yes, there are many similarities in the stages of development of the program under CCG then, and CPJ now. And, as dressedcheeseside pointed out, it was CCG's players that beat ugag in '08 and won the ACC in '09, one and two years, respectively, after CCG left. CPJ's best recruiting class is, by far, the 2012 class, especially if a few more of the offers are accepted. If CPJ is fired after the 2013 season, that class will be the same age as CCG's 2006 class when he was fired after the 2007 season. Then, will the 2012 class beat ugag in '14 and win the ACC in '15, like in '08 and '09, and we're having this same discussion again in '17? "Well, you know that Cxx only won with CPJ's recruits, don't you?" I don't want to go through this again.

Good, you see the similarities. We are now tied to a scheme and a coach who isn't always willing to change (special teams, passing, recruiting, etc.). After six years, we should have a very good indication of where this is going, be it good or bad. Hopefully, we'll enjoy the next two seasons and you can call me an idiot. Believe it or not, that would make me happy because GT is winning.

In your mind, is it possible for the program to be "going in the right direction" and not beat ugag nor win a bowl game in '12 and '13?

Possibly, but it will require more than 7 wins next year and at least 9 in 2013, which is when our good home schedule is. We fired Chan for mediocrity, which is better than half of D1 teams. Unless we are hypocrites, the same should hold true for Johnson.

I'm afraid that Tevin will still be our qb and hasn't improved (as well as our OL). I would suggest that we get our next qb ready next year so that 2013 can be a special year.

I don't understand the "isn't willing to change " crowd. Hired groh, gave a scholly to a kicker, is recruiting fairly well for GT standards. ST is certainly a concern, but its not like he is ignoring it.

No.

Put up a poll. I doubt I am in the minority.

Note that I was one of the last here to give up an Chan, but give up on him I did. And you can play the "what if" game always. What if Chan was on the verge and was about to beat UGA five times? But how many believe that?

When you hire someone you decide your criteria for success and a reasonable period to achieve that success. Then you stick with it and do not rationalize for one more year because excuses can always be found year to year that happen to all teams but only affect some.

To me, a reasonable period is enough time to have your own recruits as seniors, with a full year to recruit those seniors. So, basically by the fifth year you should see the measure of what you can expect.

But no excuses, no "What if our QB had not chosen to play baseball? No, "Our best player left early.". No, "The players have a bad attitude.".

It might not be hypocrisy; it might be learning from a mistake, and not repeating it again.

Yes. Yes. Yes. The QB battle needs to be between VL and JT next season. CPJ can send an aggressive message to the fanbase that he is not playing cautiously; Tech will either sink or swim with one of those two guys at the helm. And, if all of you are only giving him two more seasons, it would be in his best interest to get VL or JT in the game in '12 so they have some experience in '13.

I'll grant you Groh and I think it was a good hire. Although, after the defensive disaster in 2009, I don't think he had much choice. He is unwilling to modify his offense so that he can attract better talent or hire a special teams coach (the current staff isn't getting the job done). He is at the very least, resistant to changes and takes time to implement them (i.e. scholarship kicker). You could argue that it's a positive as well, that he sticks to his guns.

do we finish the seasons 12-2 and ACC champs?

no? then no.

True, that's the reason my expectations include 7 and 9 wins the next two years. We won't fire a coach coming off 8+ wins and he would get another year.
