GT adds patsy major for athletes

No I doubt the perception will change. This major is more likely to be used as a tool for coaches to say "look, it's not that bad" rather than "we got free boats and hoes, too". The sales pitch will probably be made to the individual recruits rather than to the public image. For those willing to accept a little bit of challenge who might otherwise be turned away by the "yeah it is that bad but we totes have lots of support for you" pitch that athletes may have gotten in the past, this could do the trick. It's a small step towards competing for the highly rated guys who are enrolling at other academic schools over us.

This basically. It isn't something to make their time at Tech easier per se, but it's something that they may actually have a desire to take. If they don't have an interest in learning about business and management, classes become basically pure chore to them. Maybe this lightens that feeling a bit.

I think it's natural for athletes to have interests in sports related studies. The same way a science nerd has interest in engineering related studies. It's a good thing that GT is making a move to be more inclusive to welcome students with varying interests.

LOL!!!! "Patsy"compared to other GTech choices. Not "Patsy" compared to offerings at other FB factories or other academic institutions that can offer a variety of BA studies without the more strenuous math requirements of GT.

Change should help in picking up two or three 4* players per year that we might not have gotten otherwise. Same could be said for the BBall programs.

There's a reason you don't see many SA's doing STAC/HTS/INTA. They aren't that "easy." I do think the major would be good though for SA's. It might help many work as scouts or agents if they don't make the NFL. That's just speculation on my part, but it couldn't hurt.

Wow, no way could i make it into tech today. Don't know how i made it in during the 90's

I am a bit confused by that as well. I spoke to Peterson a year ago and he said that the major recruiting obstacle for us are the Calculus requirements.

The calc requirement was assuredly maintained by the Board of Regents for that very reason.

Not impressed. We've had patsy majors like Industrial Engineering for a long time.

He hates it because, being a Tech fan, he just couldn't process being #1 in the country year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year (I think that's 23, one of you "real" engineering guys count it for me).

Pretty impressive for a major made up of flunkouts from real engineering majors.

I had misgivings about this program direction originally too. I don't anymore. I've gotten to know the guy, Dr. Johnny Smith, who is putting the program together and he's trying very hard to make it something we can be proud of. He doesn't want to turn it into a patsy major/minor/certificate. The idea for these courses came from Homer Rice and Johnny has spoken to Dr. Rice in depth about his vision. He's very sincere about making this minor something that can be used as a springboard into sports management and healthcare. It would be great if the future ADs, GMs, and agents were coming from GT...after they finished their pro careers.

Who else just got called into their bosses office and fired because their degree is now worthless?

Who else just got called into their bosses office and fired because their degree is now worthless?

How many people are going to post a variation of this in the thread?

I'm just going to throw my degree away now. It's clearly worthless.

Due to these classes being added, I will no longer be a Tech fan due to our academic prestige diminishing. I've decided to be a Harvard fan.

I just got fired because my GT degree was devalued upon this announcement. Not really, but that's what some fans may argue.

OMG, you can just HEAR the degrees devaluing! :rotfl:
