GSU to build new football stadium over Turner Field

The hell you talkin bout? State how sports are deemphasized at Tech? Check out the growth of revenue and spending at GTAA over any period you'd like. We haven't cut sports (haven't added any) and facilities across the board are really good, tons of recent investment.

Also how state legislators are involved? The CITY got 3 bids, and 2 of them sucked. GSU wants to pony up for this land and they have the money to do so. So what? Good for them.

Any of this bad for Tech?? GSU can only hurt us IF they gain admittance to Power 5. Anyone see that happening any time soon? Like, 100 years?

GSU has money?. Like taxpayer money?

Agreed - that area is hell on earth. I'm very glad the Braves wised up and chose to build their new stadium in Cobb County.

I don't think anyone disagrees that there are a lot of better locations for the new Braves stadium. The issue is that where they are putting it is a terrible location.

The old GM plant would've been a better location. Tied right into mass transit, and fairly easily accessible via surface streets around the area.

Yeah, but Doraville wasn't going to pay the bribes (sorry, "subsidies") that Cobb County forked over.

I like where the new stadium is going. Screw Doraville. That area is a ööööhole.

I think we should be concerned about GSU.
In basketball, they went to the NCAA, won an incredible upset seen all over the country, got a player drafted in the first round to the NBA.
In football, they went to a bowl for the first time in only the 6th year of the program. They went to Statesboro and obliterated Southern. They have a gunslinger QB. They are updating their facilities with this Turner field acquisition.

I think turning a blind eye to this is a mistake and could hurt us in the future.

What can/should we do?

Post about it on the internet. It's how all the problems get solved.

That new stadium is going to be a ööööshow of epic proportions.
Why?

EDIT: Never mind, for some reason thought you were talking about the new Falcons stadium

the new location will be a traffic nightmare, no doubt. So it'll be very similar to the old ööööhole location in that regard. But at least the new area itself isn't the 3rd World hellhole that the old place was.

Screw the GM Plant though - that place is a crime-ridden ööööfest area too.

No, it's perfect. What you're proposing was tried, and failed, before with Turner Field and the Olympics

What was REALLY wrong was whoever decided to build the Olympic stadium/Turner field by Fulton County stadium instead of closer to a MARTA line, where there was already an infrastructure to support all the new jobs and shops Turner field was supposed to bring. Even in the "good" days for the Turner field area, it was just a residential area. Commercial areas tend naturally to be where commercial activity already is. Legislating a residential space to become commercial is dumb.

Of course, the failings of Atlanta in the 80's and 90's have been well-documented.

It's not legislating a residential area to be commercial. It's zoned as mixed use and although I haven't read the details of the zoning district, residential and commercial are allowed, and the market can decide what should be there. Nonetheless, a mall shouldn't be built there. It's a crappy area because interstates disconnect the area on two sides. The gsu facility is prob the best use for it. Combine it with a huge as bridge connecting it to downtown and it will be much much better.

Off campus stadiums are dumb. See UConn, Miami, UCF before moving it on campus, etc. The only one that I know of that even remotely works is USC. You need the students to be involved and able to tailgate while not standing around to catch a bus.

I suppose they are using the proceeds from their bowl game to purchase the property and will either rename it or call it "Cure Bowl Field."

That's a good point. I wonder what we're doing with the proceeds from the bowl we're going to play in this year?

Valid points. But the location of that stadium is going to be closer to parts of the Georgia State campus than Bobby Dodd is to parts of the west campus. It's not like they're going to have a 45 minute commute.

It'll definitely be a boost for their baseball program and their idea to incorporate the 715 home run location into the Georgia State baseball stadium is a great idea.

NC State's is still off-campus, right? Wasn't too bad when I was up there a while back. They knew how to tailgate

No question there are some hikes, but walking across campus and using the normal on campus transportation are choices. West campus was added later on, at one time, there was only East campus, so the location made sense. If you were building it now, it would go in front of the student center.

GSU has baseball? Couldn't hurt.

Oh I agree. With the current plan, it looks more like an expansion of campus than just sticking a stadium 20 minutes away. That's why I made the point about the connection across I 20. Their campus is already a loose conglomerate of buildings located in downtown. They've struggled to have a real campus and place to house People. This is a great opportunity for some freshman dorms and other buildings.
