12 Team CFP the favorite

Oppose the playoff expansion out of fear uga makes it to the final.

Playoff gets expanded to 12 teams anyway.

Complain about it all year.

Tech gets into playoffs with two losses.

By some miracle Tech ends up playing Oklahoma in the final and wins the title.

Defend the necessity of a 12 team playoff to uga fans.

???

You nailed it. The problem the players have is they have no other way to get to the NFL so they are frustrated they “have to play school”. But the schools allow themselves to be pimped out to players who wouldn’t get admitted if they had to apply thru the regular admission process (some of course not all). And we the alumni allow it. The system will eventually break apart and I’ll enjoy watching it then watching it grow back in another form. Just like I’ll be watching MLB shutdown next year.

Just watching sports evolve (or devolve in my opinion) I don’t think it will be long until the players demands become too much and something shakes out. I don’t know what it will be but we are already seeing it in pro sports and the college players have already started following that path. Wanting to be paid, opting out, etc. Right now it is just beginning but we all see where this going. Eventually a school will push back and then the PR battle will pit sides. An example could be multiple players opting out and a school takes a stand to get reimbursed for a scholarship or something. It’s the reason we probably won’t have a MLB season next year if you‘ve been following that. Right now, the schools are playing nice because no one wants to be seen as alienating players especially in this current environment but eventually the demands will get to be too much and we all know the demands aren’t going to stop.

And if it isn’t player driven that creates a schism then I can see the schools with power eventually break away from the NCAA and form something new. We’ve talked about that before and I don’t think that is a dead idea. I just don’t see this current structure lasting in its current form.

I hope you’re right. The only thing “College” has to do with football at UGA, Bama, Clemson and OSU is that their practices and some of their games happen to be played on fields that are on a college campus.

I am honestly not sure if I would enjoy Tech football as much (i.e., enough) if we competed in a college football world where the top talent had been hived off into some other minor league.

I think I'm the opposite. If you were to move every 3-star and up ranked player across all teams to an NFL minor league, I would still watch Tech football and CFB in general. For me it's less about the individual performances and more about beating rivals or winning championships.

I agree with all that... I just think the overall level of interest by everyone – and hence including the significance of rivalries, game time atmosphere, availability on TV, etc. – would be reduced if we changed the model so drastically. There's no way, for example, that recruiting would be as big a deal in the off season. Would the Heisman be as much fun if a mediocre QB wins it and great ones of the same age are playing in an adjacent league? I think it would change everything.

Same, if FBS teams would be suddenly fielded with FCS talent, I would have no issues.
 
College football would thrive if a minor league system were in place for the NFL. The interest in college football is not player driven. Pro sports is player driven. College football is fan/tradition driven and the name on the front trumps the name on the back. To the poster who said no one wants a mediocre QB winning the Heisman. No mediocre would win the Heisman and college ball would still have stars. Someone will throw TD passes and someone would catch them. Did anyone in college hoops miss the 5 star who signed with a HBCU? Nope, and the kid ended up playing 2 games for 24 minutes. After the press told us how he was gonna change recruiting, March Madness came and went and no one missed him. It would be the same way for college football. Did we not enjoy watching Justin Thomas and Searcy and many others recently? I would welcome that with open arms.

I think recruiting could still be a big deal, since there would definitely be some star athletes that were still interested in getting a good education. In a weird way, it might improve the quality of CFB in general because there would be less of a talent gap between all the teams. It would just be something different from an NFL minor league. Does the NFL awarding someone the MVP invalidate the awards in CFB? It'll probably never happen, but if it does, my interest in CFB wouldn't change.

But in our hypothetical the two leagues would be full of age peers. The Heisman wouldn’t be going to the best 18-22 y.o., but something like the 200th best.

Probably, but I don’t know that anyone is going to care who is the best player in the NFL Jr.

Baseball and hockey are decent models. College football would still have fan interest, but it wouldn’t be the beast that it is now.
