$8 million deal

I just can’t imagine having so much money that I would choose to spend $8 million of it to ensure a kid (he’s still a junior in high school) would play football for the team I root for. That’s just insane to me given all of the charities and causes that are begging for money right now. This has definitely gotten out of hand.
What if I told you that people called Nike nuts when they paid this kid named Tiger Woods millions of dollars to sign with them before he'd ever hit a tee shot in professional golf? But when you look back at the deal in hindsight, it was some of the best money they ever spent.

I have few illusions that many (if any) of these NIL deals will pan out the way the TW deal did, and most are just quasi-legal ways of enticing an athlete to come to school A or school B. But what if the kid becomes the next Peyton Manning or the next Tom Brady? That $8 million will likely pay huge dividends.

So you can at least make the argument for the logic of doing that, if you're an alum with a company that has the money to do it.

I don’t disagree with you completely, but golf and tennis are individual sports where you can tell much more easily if a kid will be a phenom. There are just too many flops in football - and injuries.

Not really a good comparison. Tiger had already won the Jr Amateur 3 times and the US Amateur 2 times. And had finished 40th in the Masters in his first attempt.

This kid is a high school junior who has done nothing of the sort.

Surely you aren’t defending this out of control NIL crap because it is killing what was left of college football?

NIL will balance it self out. It’s new so folks are going nuts like when they open the doors on Black Friday. Over the next few years people will realize they aren’t getting the bang for their buck and NIL will naturally align itself. Remember everyone freaking out about Ewers getting that money to go to Ohio State. Did he ever even play a down for them? Answer - nope. Bama won Nattys before NIL and will win after NIL and teams like Texas A&M will try using NIL to win but it will rarely succeed. It still comes down to coaching and having a special QB and decent defense. Bama has been doing NIL the right way by paying their coaching staff. You think a place like Miami will succeed. They’ll be like crabs pulling each other down. Let them have a handful of players getting big NIL money and then we can all watch the headlines as the others and the “community” jack those with deals.

Anyway, carry on about believing a sport is dead because a handful of rich dudes want to waste their money by throwing it at a bunch of teenagers who wouldn’t get into college on their own merits. That process has a great track record of working out as we’ve seen over the past 40 years. For every one player who succeeds I can give you dozens who didn’t.

Was this school named? It has to be TAMU. Jimbo: "There is no $30M slush fund!" Yeah Jimbo, but there *is* as a $30M+" NIL collective", huh? So ****ing slimey.

We'll see. You're not wrong but you're equally not right as well. We all just don't know at this point. I do know that paying unproven players (i.e. recruits and NFL draft picks) huge contracts before they actually produce anything didnt work out well for the employers so the NFL (and other pro sports) instituted limited rookie contracts until they produce. This does feel unsustainable but the thing that irritates me is TAMU has probably the deepest funds to waste and they are willing to spend $1B+ to buy their championship. Just think about all the positive changes the school could make for their actual students with all that endowment but instead they waste it on fantasy football.

Lot of temptation out there right now…TAMU is essentially hiring mercenaries to win a championship and stroke the ego of big oil. Others doing the same. Pride always comes before the fall….Hope we stick our boots in the ground and stand firm in our mission…..it will get uglier before it gets better.

Clearly the NCAA has to try to make these against member rules if they specify the actual university the kid is signing with. Either that or it will cease to exist soon. Some of the new state laws may not specifically allow the NCAA to impose that rule in which case we would be headed to some kind of litigation or the schools will have to leave the NCAA. Super league here we come. Tech ain't gonna be in it.

Parity was already a thing of the past, but this is now in hyperdrive. If you want to compete at the highest levels, big $$ will be required. A choice will be made, and I think we all know what GT's choice will be.

I actually like this. I think it will lead to a lot of jealousy and in fighting on the team. If the player doesn’t work out or, God forbids, transfers out, whoever paid the money will go ballistic. The expectations are going to be unreal. The people who provide the money are going to want input on who plays, play selection, the coach coming to their house parties, etc. I think there is a good chance this will absolutely destroy the team and even the university. I hope so.

this logic very well could play itself out. very plausible.

I agree. How would you like to be a 300 lb. lineman blocking for this millionaire superstar? Football is a team sport and 19 and 20 year olds are notorious for being jealous if they feel a teammate is getting preferential treatment or money.

"why the hell am I forking out $100,000 for a 3rd stringer?!?!"

just give it time

Eventually the ones forking out outrageous money for flops or 3rd stingers will wise up or if they are continually this stupid with their money they will run out of money. “A fool and his money are soon parted.”

Agreed. This system is bound to fail because it’s not hoops where 1 or 2 guys can win a Natty.

I agree. That’s why I believe over time when the money doesn’t bring the results everything will stabilize. I’ll go on record right now stating that Texas A&M will not succeed. The sports gods generally don’t allow this type of behavior to succeed. Remember the Fab Five? The sports gods do not like being forced.
