The other thing that hurt CPJ and CGC is the tragic death of Brandon Adams.
Indeed I hate talking about it in the context of football but he was a very good player for us.That was no doubt huge. Our current defense would be significantly better with BA there.

We never lost that much without something to replace it with.We never had trouble going .500 or close to it. barring a myriad of injuries.
I think PJ saw that the rules changes plus his falling off a cliff in recruiting had him at a huge disadvantage, and that he wouldn't win very much.Well, what about the production that stayed? We all know Mason and D. Smith are studs. Graham and Yates both would work well in PJ's offense, and you get K. Benson back, and T. Oliver stays on offense. Offensively we would have been fine; maybe not great but typical CPJ offense.
On defense, Woody is greater than Thacker. Still not great; but better than what we were in 2019 & 2020.
We would’ve been mediocre, but I’m damn sure we would’ve won more than 3, and our players wouldn’t look like dumbasses, constantly out of position or getting stupid penalties. How many games do you think we would have won in 2019 had PJ remained the coach? Please take into account the previously posted % of offensive production that left, and the god-awful defensive ranking.
I'm not at all sure of that.We would’ve been mediocre, but I’m damn sure we would’ve won more than 3, and our players wouldn’t look like dumbasses, constantly out of position or getting stupid penalties.
The facts don’t back this up. Look at our recruiting class rankings under CPJ:I think PJ saw that the rules changes plus his falling off a cliff in recruiting had him at a huge disadvantage, and that he wouldn't win very much.
we'll see.The facts don’t back this up. Look at our recruiting class rankings under CPJ:
2008 - 49
2009 - 49
2010 - 43
2011 - 41
2012 - 57
2013 - 84
2014 - 47
2015 - 39
2016 - 67
2017 - 41
2018 - 53
We won 11 games in 2014 with similarly ranked recruiting classes. I think CPJ retired because he was burned out. If he had stayed and found the next JT, we would’ve been pretty good. If not, we would’ve been mediocre.
But that’s still not even my point. I just want a coach that can get the most out of his players. Do you think we have that right now?

Maybe if he plays less Golf and Recruits better during the previous 11 years then he doesn't get burned out!I think he was burned out and tired of AD's that didn't support him. MBob was a nightmare and TStan wanted to go another direction.
I think he hurt his foot and either ended his career before 2017 started or couldn't shake the injury and retired at the end of 2017.Matthew Jordan was supposed to be the starter in 2017. I don’t remember what the injury was that made him retire.
I'd guess more than 3.How many games do you think we would have won in 2019 had PJ remained the coach? Please take into account the previously posted % of offensive production that left, and the god-awful defensive ranking.
TStan was clearly open to letting CPJ stay if he wanted. I haven't heard anything to indicate otherwise. CPJ's retirement was his own decision. Actually, CPJ told TStan before the end of 2018 he was thinking of retiring, and TStan asked him to play out the rest of the season and see if he changed his mind.I think he was burned out and tired of AD's that didn't support him. Yeah, you can pick and choose whatever narrative you want to support. I don't think anyone "figured out" the offense. It can be beaten by beating the OL and blowing up the blocking, but that's basically true of any scheme. And VT was 4 -1 versus Duke during that same time period. This is just silly honestly.
T Stan tolerated CPJ. He made it clear what he thought of his way of running a football team in his coaching search and contract.TStan was clearly open to letting CPJ stay if he wanted. I would’t, for reasons already posted.I'd guess more than 3.
TStan talked about this in a recent Toddcast. He hiring out of the CPJ coaching tree (Monken, Navy Coach, etc.), but figured that you couldn't get anyone better than CPJ to run the CPJ offense. The terms of the current contract were made considering the fact that the roster was already built very specifically, and there would be a lot of turnover, as we've seen.T Stan tolerated CPJ.
