this is a very good hire for what our program needs. Turn it around. Build a foundation. If he brings his protege with him as an Associare Head Coach even better because now you have built in continuity with a rising star. This has great potential. People are being dumb about the age angle. The guy can coach football at a high level.

we will be able to be successful with decent recruiting and that will lead to better recruiting.

Sounds like the days of the Bill Lewis hiring. Bill has one good season, wins the Peach Bowl and is hired to GT. Is this history repeating itself? I hope the hell not. If so, AD-J wil be back at Bama selling Dr Pepper,

He was on 1.9 mil at Tulane.

How much more will GT be paying and how much for staff? Let’s hope that Batt at least has an easy buyout.

To me, that was the biggest advantage of Key. You could sign him and offer a low buyout after year 2. Low risk.

Prior to this season he was 16-32 in conference play at Tulane.

Including this season, he has 2 winning conference records in 7 seasons.

He is 62…..for comparison Sport Clips won’t be 62 until 2038

This guy and a failed position coach from our previous regime can not be our 2 best options.

Do better.

If we get 8 years out of him, he won’t be as old as Saban is now. Paul Johnson was here 10 years and it felt like an eternity in coaching terms. I’m not worried about age.

And as far as records go, see what Tulane was up to before he was there. And see what he was up to before he went to Tulane.

3-6
3-6
1-7
7-1

Last 4 years of conference records.

Kind of puzzled at first, but Fritz is a good football coach. Meat and potatoes guy. Kind of reminds me of Jim Grobe up at Wake a few years ago. Fritz' team gave CPJ's 2014 Tech all they wanted at BDS. I don't think he'll be wasting his time trying to rebrand the program. I also don't think he'll lose to Citadel. Does he have time to do it at Tech? That's question #1. Who is HC in waiting is question #2.

As for Fritz, his career total coaching W/L is 195-114.

He was HC for 13 seasons at Central Missouri (97-47) with only two losing records, both 5-6. He posted two 10-win seasons, a 9-win season, and two 8-wins seasons and won the conference once. He was HC for 4 seasons at Sam Houston State (40-15) with -0- losing records. He posted a 14-win season and an 11-win season, both times making it to the FCS CG, and a 9-win season and won the conference twice. He then coached for 2 seasons at GA Sou (17-7) winning 9 and 8 games respectively and one conference title. It was in his first season there, in their first year in the FBS division, that his team almost upset CPJ's best team in 2014. I remember that game well, and we were darn lucky to walk out with the W - that was a *tough* team!

He then set about to resurrect a Tulane program that was in *very bad shape*. The guy has guts! He has now coached 7 years as HC at Tulane (41-45), posting his 3rd winning record this season and his 4th bowl game along with now 2 conference titles. It cannot be emphasized enough how difficult a job Tulane is, yet he has coached his way to success there. If he stays, it's very likely that he will move his W/L there above .500 next season after 8 years on the job. That would be an extremely good coaching job for the situation that program was in prior to his arrival.

I'm now very intrigued by this, especially if they can keep Key on and let him finish his training under Fritz before taking over the GA Tech job.

His 2021 year at Tulane was a strange year in that hurricane Irma hit New Orleans in August and they got very limited practice time during fall camp.
I like the Jim Grobe comparison.
Fritz wasn't my first choice at all but I don't see why he wouldn't get us on the right track.
Let's face it. We are not a hot spot for college coaches and if there is truth to the disfunction of the GTAA then that makes us a dumpster fire.

I think Fritz has an upside. I checked out his offense and there is some excitement there. At least, much better than what we currently have. I think Fritz focuses more on the blocking and Xs and Os, which we need. I think things are on hold, due to the fact Tulane has 2 more games to play. They have a championship and an obvious bowl game. If they win, I believe they get into the NY6. I may be wrong on that. Either way, only one bad season at Tulane. I wished I could say we had only one bad year. I can't say I love Fritz being the head coach, but I also don't hate it. I think he will be better than Key. Will Fritz generate an instant buzz? Probably not. I don't foresee a huge transfer portal of incoming players. I think we are a .500 team, in year one. At least, that is my expectation. Still have a QB to figure out. Have a lot of work on the O line and D line, but here's to hoping. Year 2 is where I would expect to be in better bowl hunts.

No matter who we hire, let's not do another long term contract. Offer him 2 years, if he doesn't want it move on. Key was the obvious choice here, due to economics if nothing else. It is obvious these long term contracts are a disaster.

I would expect, with the substantial core of returning players, that Tech should at least get back to .500 next season and then beyond that in following seasons. Fritz has built a winner every place he's been. At Tulane, he's also encountered a high academic school. I'd say he has a chance to make this a very good hire. Tech is not in a great place today, but it is far from the broken-down mess that Tulane was a few years ago. I would expect Fritz to do well at Tech. It's been his habit wherever he's been.

I think energy matters at GT, although maybe not as much energy as CGC. I liked Fritz 4 years ago and think he is a good coach. Fritz is probably superior to Key at X and Os, however, GT needs energy. Key could learn X and Os, but from my experience, you cannot learn energy at 62.

Last year was a hurricane year with zero home games and no practice facility on campus. You count that against him?

Captain SaveA Coach on the scene lol

I don't know if he has energy or not, but I do know his 2014 GA Sou team has CPJ's team beat until a very borderline call went our way and JT5 engineered the game-winning drive as time expired. I walked away impressed with GA Sou that day. He has no sizzle, but he's a darn good coach. There's a lot of those out there. I'd say that neither Saban nor Smart particularly scintillate, especially Saban, but they win, and they surround themselves with very good coaches, some of whom do sizzle. I'd love to see them get Key back in the AHC slot and let him simmer a bit while Fritz does his stuff for a few years.
