bad news

I just want EVERYONE to know... im the Original kid around here!

Just wanted to clear that up...

Yeah, some kids may think it is better for them to transfer. It happens.

But guess what, some may transfer INto GT.

Glad we have a coach who will now teach and coach up our players, not only about football, but about life discipline as well.

PJ is not here just so the S/As can say what a nice guy he is.

A new day is here.

Re: the rumors are true...

Kinda makes a mockery of the term Student Athlete, doesn't it. I think the new regime will change that and the Tech SA will again be one who fits the total person concept that Homer Rice pitched.

Sitting through 3 classes with Stephon Marbury pretty much shattered the concept of student athlete for me. I realized even at Tech you don't have to do anything if you are good enough and don't want to.

Wow, you saw Marbury in the one quarter he actually went to class? Should have taken a picture.

I doubt this is true.

And if it is, then we've got some soft players on the team, and they can have all the fun they like riding the pine somewhere else.

Did you see the way we played this year? OF COURSE we have some soft players on the team. Didn't you watch?

Stephon Marbury also ditched after two semesters. (or maybe less? one?) Most of our SAs are head and shoulders above Stephon in terms of academic ability.

Marbury may be a bad example. I had many classes with prominent SAs who were always in class and did well. I was in work groups with several and knew first hand of their dedication. They did have some resources I didn't have, but they still had to learn the material and participate. I am not going to drop names but a couple were the most recognizable SAs in the early 90s.

Yeah. Back then it was quarters and he only went Fall and Winter and was done once we went to the ACC tourney and didn't show for class after that.

Really? I heard that his participation in that winter quarter was pretty non-existent as well.

He was not the very model of a modern student-athlete. Not really a Kristi Miller or Steven Blackwood, to name a few recent examples.

ive had class with many athletes the past couple of yrs and im pretty sure they have guys whos job is to just make sure they go to class...ive noticed this especially with bball players...theres always a guy who comes to the door around the beginning of class to see whos there then theres usually a guy sitting in the lobby when class is over...ive never noticed an athlete missing more than one or two classes or well at least the ones i go to...

Good point, they do that stuff some in sports outside of those you mentioned, for folks so need a little stricter supervision. It's not that common outside of FB and basketball, I don't think.

Did this practice go on under O'Leary and Cremins (and prior to that)?

I know it went on under O'Liary. I had multiple classes with football players, and there was always someone there checking on them. Had a little clipboard and they would go from class to class checking up on people.

I was in school during the transition from O'Liary to Chan and it definitely stopped once he was hired. Obviously it picked back up, but at first, nobody was checking anymore...

I think that one reason CPJ will be good for us is that there won't be as many (or any) transition issues on the academic side as there would be for guy who either: didn't have experience at a strong academic school, or didn't have head coaching experience and therefore never had to deal with keeping guys eligible.

Just looking from the outside, it seems safe to say that the academics suffered in the first couple of Chan's seasons.

CPJ mentioned making sure the players finished up fall semester strong academically in his press conference - which I was glad to hear.
