Benson Update?

...

That said, I thought CPJ sounded particularly annoyed about the kick coverage situation - he doesn't swear that much on his show, but he got a little sweary twice when talking about the kick coverage lapses and personnel selection for kick coverage. Sounds like that's a thing that he's legit surprised and pissed off about, like it was something he thought he could delegate and now realizes that he can't.

I think he's ticked off at most of his assistant coaches right now. I forgot which set of assistant coaches he was talking about, but he made a comment to the effect of "that's why you have assistant coaches" and the comment wasn't said in a good way. In other words, the assistant coaches in question did not do their jobs to expected level of competency.

For the OL assistant coaches, the comments about player rotation sounded to me like he was annoyed that they seemed to have punted on the concept of rotating the players. I got the impression that he thinks most of the players ought to be rotating. If you asked him, I suspect he'd say that Lee and Braun are the only ones that perhaps should play the whole game.

For special teams, I got the impression that he was more upset about the players' execution than the performance of the assistant coaches, but the comments about the number of freshman playing special teams made it clear that he sees his assistant coaches as at fault too.

For now, he's probably giving the defensive coaches and players a partial pass since it is a new system, but by game 10 you'll be hearing comments about how they should have it figured out by now.

He said in the press conference that he will be putting more experienced players on the kick team. Sounds like some underclassmen lost their positions

I'm not going to go back and find all the posts over all the years that suggested putting experienced football players on special teams. Of course, if our kicker could put the kickoff out of the back of the endzone then we could trot out 11 rats with no problem.

I am pretty sure that CPJ was expecting the kick to be un-returnable. Oops.

Last year only about a third of college kickers were able to achieve even a 5/10 touchback ratio, and less than ten in the whole country achieved 7/10.

CPJ was definitely not expecting our kickers to get all touchbacks.

True but the rule change this year definitely encourages returners to fair catch the kickoff and just take the spot on the 25. I noticed in the press conference that he did seem like he wasn't expecting the guy to bring it out. However, that's all beside the point - putting a bunch of freshmen out there was probably not a wise move.

He thought the kick wouldn't be returned because it was an excellent kick. Shawn Davis is not the problem with our kickoff coverage. That's my point in all this finger-pointing about special teams and missing Butker. The composition of the unit (as you and he note) is where we went wrong.

Well that is just shit preparation...did he not know their guy is a world class sprinter?
