Benson Update?

Marcus Marshall transfers, Dedrick Mills is kicked off the team, and now Benson is injured and out for the year. That's 3 starting/key B-backs we've lost in the last 2 seasons. Just...blah.

At least it sounds like we'll see him on the field again in 2019. I still feel for the guy.

When you think about it, it's a testimony to CPJ's BB recruiting. In the past few years we've had a lot of great BB's, and he still thinks we're as deep as we've ever been there.

He says that, but no one on our roster is as good as Mills, by far. Sure we have serviceable guys in there, but Mills was just at a different level. Higher, one might say.

I like Mills, too, but the magnitude of the differential between Mills and Benson or Marshall or whomever doesn't seem like something to be argued over. I think they've all been great. And if CPJ thinks the guys in waiting are good, too, I'm willing to remain excited.

He also said on Monday night that Benson would be "fine."

He said that both Marshall and Benson were "fine," and later said that "everybody was fine." To me, that whole exchange just sounded like evasive, "I'm not giving you an injury report here" talk.

Yes that is my point. And in the same way he says that all of his BBs are good. When in fact we all know that Mills and Marshall were better than what we have now. IIWII

Maybe a little different if you get down in the weeds, but the same thing at a high level. I think the injury thing is about not giving information to gameplanning opponents any earlier than necessary, maybe with a side of protecting privacy. The Mills and Marshall thing is just politics. No coach is ever going to come out and publicly say "yeah, we had a big drop off in talent and the guys we have now aren't going to be able to get it done."

On the one hand, I'm not sure why anybody expects to hear anything besides evasion and platitudes from football coaches, and on the other hand, I'm not sure why media outlets continue to go through the motions of asking those kinds of questions. The most interesting thing you're likely to get is a coach getting pissy with a reporter.

That said, I thought CPJ sounded particularly annoyed about the kick coverage situation - he doesn't swear that much on his show, but he got a little sweary twice when talking about the kick coverage lapses and personnel selection for kick coverage. Sounds like that's a thing that he's legit surprised and pissed off about, like it was something he thought he could delegate and now realizes that he can't.

We will miss Benson's vision. Doesn't appear that Mason has that - yet. Playing time will help, though.
