Bowling!

Why is everybody bitching about the Pinstripe? Because of the weather?
I think because of the distance and maybe the idea floating around of a possible matchup with Auburn a few hours away from ATL.

I'm not complaining - I can actually make the short trip up for that one - that's an awesome trip for me. But the mere mention of Auburn in Charlotte does kind of overshadow a game in NYC.

For a lot of these players NYC around Christmas time would be pretty special. How many of them even see snow? Could get to play a snow game which is always fun. Throw in a Knicks or Rangers game at Madison Square Garden and it’s a pretty sweet deal.

GT-Auburn in Charlottesville died when VT became Bowl Eligible.... Virginia Tech’s momentum appeals especially to the Military Bowl in Annapolis, Maryland, and Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina....this is where the Alabama-Georgia result comes in. (For VT Placement)

If the top-ranked Bulldogs prevail, the Big Ten’s Ohio State would be the ACC’s probable Orange Bowl opponent, in which case the ACC inherits the Big Ten’s slot in the Tampa-based ReliaQuest Bowl. The ReliaQuest, in turn, would likely select Notre Dame, since the Fighting Irish enter the ACC’s bowl mix when they don’t qualify for a New Year’s Six game.

Notre Dame (9-3) in Tampa could well leave N.C. State (9-3), Clemson (8-4) and UNC to fill the ACC’s contracted spots in the TaxSlayer (Jacksonville, Florida), Pop-Tarts (Orlando) and Holiday (San Diego), with Duke or Miami in the Sun (El Paso). In that scenario, the Duke’s Mayo would pounce on Virginia Tech, which bowled in Charlotte in 2016 and ’19 and, just this month, brought thousands of fans to the city for a women’s basketball game against Iowa. The ACC’s opponent in Charlotte will be from the SEC.

But if Alabama upsets Georgia, either the Crimson Tide or Bulldogs would likely go to the Orange, and the ACC would not take the Big Ten’s place in Tampa. Clemson/UNC/NC State could then fall to the Duke’s Mayo, and despite their disappointing season, the Tigers’ four-game winning streak and television appeal would be irresistible. Either way Georgia Tech does not get an invite to Charlotte.
Nice analysis, btw. Credit where credit is due.

Rutgers looks like a good matchup if you care about Tech getting a W. Their scores this season suggest a bad to mediocre offense which is exactly the type of opponent we need and have done well against.

All this lamenting the bowl selection is absurd, especially after the pit we just crawled out of. Can you not just enjoy things even a little without a massive menstrual flow? For öööös sake, maybe Tech should just decline the bowl invite since it's not near good enough.

:bigcry:

I think it’s mostly driven by a desire to attend the game.

Georgia Tech finishes tied for fourth after being picked to finish 12th in the preseason... The Pinstripe Bowl payout: $4,400,000 The Boca Raton Bowl payout is 900K. The Pinstripe Bowl is viewed as a more prestigious destination. So the SA experience and gifts would be better in the Pinstripe compared to the Boca.

.

Anything outside of New Years bowls and Playoff bowls are basically the same in "prestige". (None)
And, aren't payouts all put in a pot and split amongst all ACC teams? If so, game payout is irrelevant.
However, IF the bling is better for the players than having more GT fans at the game, then I guess you have me on that one.

It comes down to:
1) people want to play Auburn, a historic rival, rather than Rutgers
2) people want to go to Florida and not New York in the winter

Payouts cover the participating team’s expenses first; then revenue is split. So there are advantages to a $4M+ payout compared to $1-2M. Teams playing in the smaller bowls will often take a financial loss.

Yes Sir, It will be a tough game.... It will be like our Minnesota matchup in 2018 ... We can't over look them...

They Beat: VT, Northwestern, Temple, Wagner, Mich St, Indiana
They Lost: Ohio St, Penn St, Michigan, Maryland, Wisconsin

We can't over look them.... We need to play them like we played Georgia to get the "W"

Why is everybody bitching about the Pinstripe? Because of the weather?

Charlotte, Jacksonville, and Birmingham are easy drives from Atlanta. NYC is a ööööty drive or a plane trip.

GT alumni may be more spread out than most alumni bases, but I bet half of our alumni are with 5 hours of Atlanta. More so when including sidewalk fans.

Boy is it an expensive PITA to travel to NYC on bowl notice. Looks like $700 or so a person flying. $650 or so a person on Amtrak if you want something more than a seat. I don't know if we've yet come up with a dollar conversion for the pain and suffering of traveling on I-95 anywhere between Richmond, VA and Maine. Probably damn near $100 in tolls each way though.

It might legitimately be easier, faster, and cheaper to go to the Bahamas Bowl or even the International Bowl in Toronto.

Or it coulda just been < 7 hours drive to Charlotte or Birmingham or Jacksonville or Tampa or Orlando or even Annapolis. Unless you are strictly driving and going to the Fenway Bowl, this is the most PITA bowl game to get to. It's easily the most expensive bowl game to get to. And all to play Buttgers on a baseball field with terrible sight lines.

Way better than no bowl, a great reward for the players ... but let's not sell this as some huge win for fans because it isn't.

Check Spirit, Frontier, and Southwest.

That was the Southwest price. Delta was over a grand.

I flew to the Sun Bowl for like $380 round trip on AA (*makes cross over chest*). Tragically to see them collapse against Utah instead of punk Kiffykins.

This is the other issue with the Pinstripe; if the team just doesn't get up wanting to play Rutgers (vs an Auburn for example) it could set us up for a ööööty game.
