Bowls, CFP, and other Disappointing Games Thread

In a 24-24 game with 29 seconds left the expert color analyst in a national semifinal game said that if a run broke open for a TD the back should fall down intentionally so they could win with a FG with no time left on the clock. So, he would rather be tied with 20 seconds with the ball in the red zone than up 31-24 with 20 seconds left. Not to mention, the opponent had their timeouts left. How do these guys get these jobs?
I'm sure the color analyst is a dumdum. However...

- Go down at the 1. 1st and Goal at the 1, ~20 seconds left.
- Clock resumes once ball is set and ref signals to start clock. Penn State burns 1st timeout.
- Take knee. Penn State burns 2nd timeout. 2nd and Goal.
- Take knee. Penn State burns 3rd timeout. 3rd and Goal.
- Take knee. 4th and Goal.
- Run clock down to 2 seconds, call timeout.
- Kick game-winning FG as time expires.

Am I missing something? I think that's riskier because college kicking game isn't as reliable, but it seems rational at least.

Your missing the holder fumbling the snap and it being returned for a PSU touchdown.

The smart move is you take the 7 points and go up by 7 hoping your defense that has played well all night can stop the PSU offense for 20 seconds. The only reason you would take the gamble of trying to run out the clock is if the TD puts you up by less than 7 such that a quick PSU touchdown would lose you the game.

Yeah, I yelled at that moron too.

This. Go up 7 with under a min 10 times out of 10. If the other teams scores somehow after that, its likely going to OT at worst, and letting them score so fast is on you anyway.

I’d just take the 7 if I could with only 20 sec left.

Yes. You are missing something very important.

TD with 20 seconds left is an extremely unlikely outcome. FG is much more likely. Get up by 4 or more is about as much of a sure thang as it gets.

If it were like 50 seconds left, your defense is bad, and you have confidence in your FG unit, I think it would make sense to do. So I don't think it's an automatically stupid idea--it depends on the specific circumstances.

If NC State had done this against us they probably would've won. Their RB broke a 53-yard TD run with 1:30 left. Unless we had all 3 TOs (can't remember), they could've gone down at the 1 and run the clock to 2 seconds, then kicked the game winner.

Just checked and we had 1 timeout left so NC State could've won the game that way. It was possibly a better bet than defending us from scoring a TD with 1:30 left

Ox would take the TD, then go for two.

That is the stupidest idea I have ever heard from an announcer.

it was only 30 seconds before that where the announcer said he would not play for a tie.. he would trust his QB (Pedo state qb) to "play aggressive" and go down the field and win the game for them... 2 seconds later he throws the pick and the announcer says something like... "ohh... penn state tried to get too aggressive there"

Yeah, I yelled at that moron too.

And if that had happened, the fault would lie at Santucci's feet for going to that damn prevent defense.

I kinda want to see Texas win here just to avoid OSU making to another final but it would glorious to see them choke in an another final too.
