Can the AA afford $1.8 million?

I don't see why we can't have one or two five stars on our recruiting list.

Seriously guys, if you were a 5 star, can't miss recruit, with NFL stars in your eyes, being recruited by all the big schools, would you go to Tech? I love Tech but I'd have to lean towards USC or FL myself. Sun, girls, top notch facilities and percs and not too much trouble with the classroom. That may not be popular view but it's real.

if you watch Wheeler on the field you will see 5*'s but if you look on the board you will see 2*'s

Hasn't Gailey already publicly stated that if he gets offered an NFL job he will take it?

IMO, have at it Chan. I like what the rest of the coaching staff is doing or at least trying to do..but for some reason it just seems like you are holding them back.

Its not often when I see a post and agree with it 100%, but your sums up my feelings EXACTLY.

I've always wondered how good we could be if you replace Chan with Giff Smith and keep the coordinators the same, what would happen?

But on the other hand he does have a SEC title and a MNC to his credit, what does Gailey have that is comparable?

Gailey had a lot better NFL stint than Saban. In 2 seasons, Saban had a losing record and no trips to the playoffs. In 2 seasons Chan had a winning record, a division title, and 2 trips to the playoffs.

But I have little doubt Saban will eventually succeed at 'Bama.

I think we should take all the NCAA coaches, and calculate how much 1 win costs, and find out who's a bargain and who's a dumb hire.

There have been programs with less talent, less support, and less tradition passing us up in the last few years.
Who you talking about?

Louisville?---not so hot this year
USF?---an athletic 3rd grader could get accepted under their guidelines
Boise?---lots of comp in that mountain west
UCF?---" " " " " (enter conf. name here)

Who's passing us up?

Don't you think that waiting til the season is over before you put CCG on the chopping block would be a better idea? Nothing is going to happen until then so.......you're waisting your breath.

I swear you just want to get to "dodd-like" in two months.

What if TC had played the whole Virginia game.......WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN!!!!??????? WOULD WE BE DISCUSSING THIS(HEAD EXPLODES)

Success at Bama is spelled BEAT AUBURN and I don't mean occasionally. For $4 million, it had better be every year.

If Alabama wins 8 games, aren't they paying $500K for each victory? I could be wrong, but I think it was something like that.

I am sorry you feel that way. I have no ill will towards you.

Louisville has passed us up, yes. They made it to a BCS bowl game and have been in the top 10 consistently. They have had defensive problems this year, but we have had our problems as well. Petrino also left, of course.

I was not referring to USF really. They haven't proven to me they can stay in the top-10 for a whole season.

Also of note: BC, Kentucky, WVU, Rutgers.

Two things. We haven't been to a BCS bowl since 1966 so life is too short to be miserable for 40 years and perhaps another 30 or 40. If we go to 3-5 BCS bowls the rest of my realtively young life that will be a lot more than the generation before me has seen.

Secondly, the ACC's bowl tie-ins suck so this is what we get for being in the ACC. If we were still in the SEC, we would have better bowl tie-ins and perhaps would have been to much better and more varied bowls the last few years but we are in the ACC. If you want out of the ACC, then take it up with Rad and he might be willing to try one mre time to get back in the SEC.

Actually the 1990 Citrus was equal to a BCS bowl because it featured the ACC Champ.

For the time being, Louisville has passed us, but I sense them crashing back to the mediocrity from which they came within the next 5 years. I think it has already begun this year.

Doesn't that just further emphasis the importance of a good HC? Petrino leaves they fall back to mediocrity. O'Leary leaves and we fall back to mediocrity...

Perhaps, but I wouldn't necessarily call the CCG Era mediocre just yet.

1994 - 0-3 (0-2 ACC) No Bowl
1995 - 6-5 (5-3 ACC) No Bowl
1996 - 5-6 (4-4 ACC) No Bowl
1997 - 7-5 (5-3 ACC) Won Carquest Bowl
1998 - 10-2 (7-1 ACC) Won Gator Bowl
1999 - 8-4 (5-3 ACC) Lost Gator Bowl
2000 - 9-3 (6-2 ACC) Lost Peach Bowl
2001 - 7-5 (4-4 ACC) Won Seattle Bowl under MM, that's the 8th win, but it doesn't count towards GOL's record since he had already left.

Waaaaiit a second. List O'Leary's records for me.
6-5
5-6
7-5
10-2
8-4
9-3
8-5

The difference was the program progressed under O'Leary. He had to clean up a Bill Lewis team that had gone 1-10 the previous season. Chan took over a program that was already 8-5 the previous season.

yeah, but chan inherited a team that was 8-5, GOL inherited a team that was 1-10

Yes, and O'leary had an easier ACC to compete in, a UGA prior to Richt, and used players that were ineligible that later put us on probation. I liked O'leary when he was here; but I'm perplexed as to why people on the message boards hold him in such high esteem.

Not sure we have been that far ahead or behind any of these teams. WVU is def ahead of us now but they were basically even with us the last decade. Of course they have a WV coach who loves the school and they love him.

UK has been to the Nashville bowl in the last 10 years. They have beaten bama once in 40 years and UGA once in 10 years. they have a top 5 draft pick at QB who leaves this year. If they go 2-6 in the SEC next year, I'll be shocked.

BC has been on par with GT for awhile. They consistently beat ND and have very similar records to GT year in and year out. They beat us the last two times they played us in 1998 and this season. In 1998, GT went 10-2 with its best team in the last 15 years. BC has a senior QB and I'll be shocked if they go better than 6-2 in the ACC this year and would expect 4-4 at best next year.

Rutgers has not bypassed GT though they do have a great coach who is an alum of the school. But he has recruiting disadvantages and therefore 8-4 or 9-3 would be a very good year for him this season and most. Rutgers is like GT without the academic restrictions in many ways but they have not passed us. We're favored over a team this Saturday that just beat the crap out of Rutgers at Rutgers last week.

UGA has passed us, So Car may pass us, Bama will probbaly pass us, FSU will soar pass us if they get the right coach but by and large unless you're willing and able to pay $2.5 million or more per year and willing to have your coach go to the pros for $4 million per year, then GT should be quite content. Lousiville passed us and then their great coach left and now we would be favored over them by 7 pts this Saturday.

It's hard to succeed much more unless you're bringing some serious dough for the next Petrino and lowering some academic standards.
