Catchall Deion Sanders Thread

NIL will increase parity among rich schools. It's a lot easier to compete with Nick Saban's recruiting when the most important factor is money and you have a similar amount to spend. And there are plenty of schools with comparable wealth to Bama.

NIL will decrease parity between rich schools and non-ruch schools. Not that there ever was much, but when it wasn't so openly about money poorer schools could sometimes attract great talent based on other things.

Calvin Johnson came here in large part because he was serious about education, but I don't care how serious about education you are -- no one is turning down a high six figure NIL check to get a better education.

Among non-rich schools, the portal is definitely an equalizer simply because it makes it easier to recover from recruiting misses or catastrophic injuries.

For the non-rich schools, the portal is also a poaching ground for the rich schools to scout. If there was still the 1-year sit-out rule, we would have had Gibbs last year. The rich schools can now de-emphasize their lesser ranked recruits and just watch for non-rich schools to have stars break out.

Yes. And funnily enough, that also increases parity among the non-rich schools, because if you do happen to put together a very good team you can't ride that to wins for three years.

Not saying that's a good thing. I think it really sucks. But it will increase parity among the schools who are being poached from.

This is the problem. Stand out players at Tech will be steadily recruited by head hunters for big programs. It's a problem on many levels. Keeping good players, keeping them academically qualified in a challenging school, and keeping them from leaving to a higher profile program that will pay them more and give them an easy road academically. These players also become a risk of becoming insufferable prima donnas requiring special treatment.

This situation caps the upside for programs like Tech, permanently tilting the tables to the factory schools.

It will have to be fixed ASAP or Tech and many other programs like it will need to seriously consider their future in the FBS system as it is today.

Non-rich schools will be farm clubs for the rich schools. Not only will the breakout stars be recruited by rich schools but non-rich schools will be landing spots for the 4/5 stars that didn't pan out at the rich schools. I liked college football better when it was less transparent.

guess who is now closer to being a rich school than us?

Parity? Is someone talking about parity in college football?

I’m not holding my breath for GT to achieve parity with Nick Saban’s Alabama.

Bud Elliot from the Cover 3 podcast was saying almost exactly the same thing the other day.

Right, but then the non-rich schools are limited to a ceiling of maybe a NY6 bowl, basically never a CFP appearance.

Define “non-rich schools”

I agree with you 100% honestly. It's a completely different ballgame now, and you have to be ready to flip your roster if that's what it takes. Colorado is the ultimate case study on doing what it takes to win. I wish GT would take a little bit of that to heart.

Let's wait till he wins a game before we celebrate the approach
