May be a little 'cavalier' about recruiting & not realize yet that it is the 'lifeblood' of your program. O'L's famous quote "recruiting's like shaving, if U don't do it everyday U look like a bum". When Gailey loses a ton of George's recruits, this yr & next, he may be wondering where all the football players went & by then it will be too late.
It also grates me about his 'nose up in the air' attitude towards the Ga players. Granted, there's not all that many we recruit, but Suggs, J Smith, L Thomas, Hollings, Ford, Heller, Robinson, Reilly, Roberts-Blake, Wallace, Wimbush, D Smith, Fox, Brown, G Johnson, Hester, Muyres & Rhino speak volumes about where they have lifted GT's program to. I dunno, he may be taking this recruiting thing & Ga recruiting thing TOO lightly.

Well, it is a newspaper report. Who knows what he actually said and meant. It does not pay to expect Truth from the confusion of journalism.

Speaking of recruiting, whose recruiting do you think will get the biggest boost in NE recruiting as a result of this game, which is being called the biggest game EVER in Storrs, even by regional papers.

While I'd rather DB had elected to play there in '04 or '05 (according to regional papers, it was his suggestion to play there), I'd like to think we'll be attracting the attention of some top prospects in the region as the result of the (expected) blowout.

It will probably also boost UConn's recruiting, but with a lower level of prospect.

BellySeries has probably hit the target right in the middle. It is probably an article by the AJC to portray to the Georgia recruits that Tech is not interested in them. A typical AJC ploy.

I feel sure Gailey will go after any recruit in Georgia he feels is good enough and can handle the academics at Tech. Since Gailey is a Georgia boy, he has no reason to have a distaste for Georgia athletes.

At the same time, we all know there are many recruits from Georgia unable to get into Tech. It is foolish to pursue those that cannot pass the academics at Tech. I feel sure he will pursue any from Georgia that are elligible, while scouring the country for other candidates.

It was not Tech's study producing the report that Georgia was near the bottom in academics in the U.S. It is a fact reported in the AJC.

Not long after GO came to GT, he stressed the importance of our State to improve education. He indicated back then that recruiting for GT in-state would probably slump due to that. From all I hear, it's gotten even worse!

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">So what???....that is saying nothing.....there are many recruits from EVERY state unable to get into TECH.
You have to do like Coach O'leary did and find them. Just look at the talent that O'leary left and MUCH of it came from Georgia.
The low SAT score report about Georgia doesn't tell the whole story because over 50% of Georgia students take the SAT: many of the other states use the ACT so they may have as few as 5% of their students taking the SAT. It is comparing apples and oranges.
Gailey will enjoy the recruiting success of Coach O'leary the next few years but he better learn how to recruit.....and soon....for his good as well as ours.

BeeWare, I don't expect Gailey to ignore Georgia, as stated in my last post, however, we will have to wait until the recruiting season has ended to see where we stand.

We did take in some questionable athletes during the O'leary regime, but also lost some of them along the way. We were beginning to lose more each year as transfers. I would not be surprised if some of those were not due to academics.

It may pay over a period of time to select more qualified candidates on a national basis and take the ones meeting our requirements from Georgia.

ahso,
As usual your post is basically nonsense.
Coach O'leary did a magnificent job of recruiting at TECH....if you don't believe it look out on the field each Saturday. We have had few academic problems and few discipline problems.
You better worry about something factual....like whether or not your buddy Buck has a clue about recruiting?!?! If he does, he certainly hasn't shown it yet.

Speaking of nonsense..........you seem incapable of having a discussion on any subject without making personal attacks on other posters

I agree with Beeware on this one, O'Leary did an outstanding job recruiting at GT and that is one of the main reasons that we have been so solid for the past 5 years. Gailey has yet to proved that he will be able to recruit successfully and in my opinion taking a national academic approach will make his job very difficult, even for a skilled recruiter. How can it be easier to recruit nationally against all of the national powers and the locals schools than it would be to recruit locally. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Because traditionally the Georgia high school athletes lean towards UGAg and the SEC schools.

I am sure the high school kids in Texas typically lean toward UT, A&M and the Big 12. Kids from Louisianna and Florida typically go to the state schools from those states as well. If you can't successfully recruit your home state then (unless you are ND) you will have a hard time being successfull in the long term. UGA can't sign everyone from GA since there are usually 40 - 60 kids that sign Div 1 scholarships. We have to win the occasional battle with UGA but more importantly hold our own with Auburn, Clemson, etc..

If Tech is really toughening academic requirements for recruits we have no choice but to make our recruiting efforts more national in scope. Contrary to Beeware's claim (imagine that once again he is making things up to fit his argument) most high school kids take the SATs these days. In NC basically EVERY high school studen takes the SAT at least once. The fact is that GA high schools do an abysmal job of educating their students. (Not claiming NC does any better). We do need to comb GA for those athletes who can do the work both on and off the field, but we won't survive without the national scope.

Hey Guys and Gals ... why dont we do this... give the guy a chance to get his FIRST recruiting class before we start announcing the sky is falling... (and I dont consider last years class his first class either)

Sometimes you can analyze things TOO MUCH, why dont we save some of the fret for now ... signing day is 5 months away... alot will happen between now and then....

I think we are all old enough to know that you cant believe everything that is said, and that most of what is known is not said.... stop worrying... enjoy the season.... Hey.. we are 2-0 and looking good this year !!

On a HS football program I happened to have on in the background while doing some computer work, I did hear several Georgia HS players mention an interest in Georgia Tech (sorry, wasn't playing enough attention to catch their names), so our program is being noticed.

IF we look good against Clem's Son and Brigham's Young, our stock with in-state players will go way up.

IF we look good against FShucksU and (most importantly) UGag, we'll have no trouble recruiting intelligent in-state players who would otherwise go to UGag or bordering state schools.

Nothing recruits like success.
and you can quote me on that ;-)

Incidentally, happened to see a old Decatur High classmate, Jeff Hollis, as coach at North Forsyth (believe it was). Small world! (He married the cheerleader I had a crush on and helped with her homework, and they are still together. They have lived the dream many of us had in HS. The rest of us had to put away games and work in the "real" world ;-) Good for them.

I love how people voice what they feel are legitimate concerns and they are jumped on for claiming the sky is falling. I will have to check my URL because I thought this was StingTalk and not the Hive. I hope Gailey turns out to be a great recruiter but I haven't seen a lot of positives thus far, hence my worry. From the rumored increased academic standards to Gailey public comments on recruiting Georgia, I think we have reason to worry. I still haven't heard a valid reason as to why it will be easier to compete with ND and Texas for example to get good kids out of Texas than it would be to compete with UGA and Auburn for kids in GA. My worry is that we will be getting the kids that the state/national schools don't offer, like we did last year.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Goldmember... I didnt mean for it to sound as if I was jumping on anyone... I think its fine for someone to state their concerns, opinions, etc.. thats the purpose of this board... but I also think its fine for me to state my own opinion too... as I stated above... I dont see a need for worry at this time... and in my opinion... it is akin to "the sky is falling".... sometimes I am amazed at the lack of confidence that some fans seem to have in our program... if we miss the boat on recruiting in early February, then I think we will have something to address, until then, unless I am wrong, I dont think anyone has signed with any school as of yet... and verbals just dont mean that much today... too much can happen over the next 5 months...

I don't worry about recruiting at all. Sometimes the best ones are the ones unrecruited, and the worst ones are the top rated prospects. Top recruiting is why Cremmins had to leave, his players were too good and either left early or had a chip on their shoulder and wouldn't team play. Plus look at how many "5-Star" recruits turn out to be thugs and get arrested or embarrass their schools. I like our school the way it is.

Good coaching and teamwork can overcome talent anyday. Look at the world basketball tourney if you don't believe me.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I tend to agree. But I sure hope we continue to bring in speed. GOL made great headway in recruiting guys that can run. I feel certain that CG will do the same.
