Chan had better be careful....

Well, I was just clarifying hiveredtech's point not necessarily agreeing with it.

Just to try to make a point...

I don't recall Md's ACC title being outright, but it may have been. I recall it being backed into. Also, did Fridge exceed our ACC record from this year? ever? I recall Md fattening up 10 win seasons on a mostly embarrassing OOC schedule but I could be wrong... (full disclosure is that I do 'advocate' an easier OOC schedule.)

A second point...
I would not be comfortable whatsoever with Md as a fan right now. While I have been accused of 'accepting mediocrity', what I really have as a minimum is for continued improvement. As George used to say you either move forward or backward. Md has not shown continued improvement while I believe GT has. A lesser key is improvement in recruiting. Fridge has not mastered this either IMHO. At this time, which team has proven more in the current ACC? And finally, which team will be higher rated TODAY?

I am totally impressed with Fridge's 10 win seasons. But RIGHT NOW there is no way in hades I would trade coaching staffs.

Ralph has had three 10-seasons, won an ACC title, played in a BCS bowl, won National Coach of the Year, 3-1 bowl record (vs. 2-3 for CG), and better overall record than CG. In fact, Fridge's record represents the second best record for any ACC coach in his first 6 years.

Yeah, it would really suck if we had those results.

Maryland did not have to win an ACC Championship game to go...we actually won the ACC this year with a 7-1 record as opposed to Wake's 6-2 under the same scenario Maryland was in and we would have been in the Orange.

and btw...we OWN Maryland...Fridge can't beat us.

They didn't have to win a championship game, but they did have to play every team in the conference. This year Maryland played Wake Forest, Boston College, and FSU while we played VT, UNC, and Duke. Which three teams would you rather play?

Of course we own Maryland, Maryland has one of the worst football traditions of any school in the conference right down there with Duke and Wake. Maryland has only beaten us 5 times ever. Yet some how Fridge has a better conference record (30-18) than Gailey (24-16).

Whoever the HC is at GT, he should be able to do better than whoever the coach is at Maryland. GT is just a better football school than Maryland.

Ralph and JT are two totally different people. Ralph has the charisma of Sam from Cheers compared to JT.
The practices I've been to, JT had plenty of charisma. It wasn't the sweet, friendly kind, but the ability to intimidate definitely counts for "charisma," and Tenuta's got that in spades.

Anyway, my original point still stands. If we were to replace Chan with anyone other than Jon T, then whichever replacement we got would get the same treatment Chan gets now, because people have already made up their minds that the hire was bad.

Whoever the HC is at GT, he should be able to do better than whoever the coach is at Maryland. GT is just a better football school than Maryland.
Wooooah there horsey. Is UGA a better football school than GT? Most people think so. And yet we (we meaning you, me, us, everyone else here) don't expect us to lose every year to them.

And btw, 30-18 and 24-16 are only 2.5% (one game) apart. Fridge and Chan's teniors are actually fairly similar.

Beej,

Historically, we have won 40% of our games vs. UGA. Maryland has won 27% of their games vs. us. Wake and Duke have a better winning % vs. us. Why do you think Ross jumped ship to come to GT? Because he knew he would have a better situation at GT than at Maryland.

Do you think we would be 0-5 against UGA with Fridge?

If you were taking over would you rather takeover a program that:

A. Has been in the Top 25 each of the past 5 years and been to bowl game each of the past 5 years.

OR

B. Hasn't finished a season ranked in 16 years or gone to a bowl game in 11 years.

And to answer your question, I am not going to say that UGA has a "better" football program, but I would say that it is easier for a coach to win there.

Yes.

Ralph had back-to-back losing seasons, deep enough into his tenure to have his own players, and didn't have NEARLY the adversity GT has faced. Why would I think he would have done better at GT than our current coach?

When he's played Chan with his own players, Chan has beaten him consistently. Do you think Chan had better talent the last 3 meetings? I don't.

A little history for you JTS -

When Len Bias died from cocaine, the Maryland President and trustees went on a witchhunt for blame running roughshod through the athletic department firing Lefty and other basketball coaches. Bobby Ross asked them for clarification and support saying that the football program was clean and he would be under no suspicion or investigation. They refused to do so and Ross promptly resigned.

He had accepted a job as an NFL assistant (I forget the team) when the GT AD (answer to Techbert's quiz) caught Ross in an airport and offered him the job....

Just curious, how do those numbers change for, say, our lifetimes? (dating me and JTS a little here, the last 30 to 35 years) The reason I stay on this point goes back to what you said:

Whoever the HC is at GT, he should be able to do better than whoever the coach is at Maryland. GT is just a better football school than Maryland.

Which sounds familiarly like this:

Whoever the HC is at UGA, he should be able to do better than whoever the coach is at GT. UGA is just a better football school than GT.

...which is a line fed to us by leghumpers that we universally refute. I don't see how anyone (you, me, whoever) can universally refute the leghumpers UGA-GT version and yet stand by your GT-Maryland version. And I don't think pre-historic winning percentages have anything to do with it, so if you want to continue with the head-to-head-record rebuttal, at least modernize your numbers first, and we'll discuss those.

Very Nice, GTL

And the answer is the Bills.

For you whipper snappers, GTL is correct on all particulars. (That, and an incident where he grabbed a game official, to get his attention while running off the field.)

The truth demolishes the myths that the CEZ's build around our history.

We have played 40 seasons since Bobby Dodd retired. Unfortunately, I can name the years we beat them without looking it up. We have won 11 times over that 40 year period, a winning percentage of 27.5%.

Bringing the conversation back toward the topic:

Q: How many college coaches have been interviewed for the Miami job, out of how many total interviewees?
Q: Who are they?

Side Q: Which of those schools are widely considered to be "just a better football school" ... ?

...which is a line fed to us by leghumpers that we universally refute.

Who refutes that UGA is a better football program? I am not really sure how you or anyone else refutes that, the evidence is overwhelming.

I figure if he goes, at least I won't have to listen to people bitch anymore.

There hasn't been a day that isn't good for some bitchin'.

We (or at least I) refute the idea that because they're a "better" football program, traditionally, whoever's their HC should do better than whoever's HC at Tech. (JTS's phrasing)
