chernoff and Gailey exchanged strong words on 790

Just in case no one has noticed, Chernoff is a goon.

Why do we care about these dorks opinions?

Beej, I have read the entire thread....

Chernoff is a Roostersmoker, and I'm surprised anyone agrees to be interviewed by him.

and I have only one question ..."WTF is a roostersmoker"?

Re: Beej, I have read the entire thread....

You guys seriously can't figure out "roostersmoker?" Think of another name for rooster, for instance the one that South Carolina uses...

I just listened to the interview and it brought back a bit of nostalgia. I remember when I used to get a kick out of listening to my barber tell me about the mistakes I made at my job and how I could do it much better. It also reminded me of Zell Miller's reaction to Cris Mathews' criticism when Zell told him that he would have liked to challenge Cris to a duel had they lived in times past.

I came away feeling that Chernoff came nearer to "losing it" than Chan and that Chan defended himself OK under the barrage of Chernoff accusations. Perhaps old "syrup mouth" (Bobby Dodd) would have handled Chernoff much better. I don't know what Bill Curry would have said, but it might have gone something like this, "Well we are always on the lookout for expert QB opinions like yours. Thank you very much for your astute analysis of the QB statistics. So when do you think you might help us translate your profound knowledge into the kind of game-winning QB performance that suits your style of play?"

Alas, however, that might create some dead-air time on the program.

WOH wait. They didn't bring up reggie CHAN DID.
So, uhh, Chernoff going strait for "there's been no progression at the QB position in the last 6 years" somehow wasn't about Reggie?

Rooster was me attempting to Hive-ify my response. Forgot where I was for a second. :)

I'll have to give Chan credit for not allowing them to box him into a corner of bashing ANY player he's coached. It would be very easy for Chan to have agreed, gotten a pat on the back and gone on w/the interview. Gotta give him the kudos on this one.
Also;
Q) How would Norm Van Brocklin handled the same interview?
A) Chairs cleared, reporter would have a broken nose.

Q) How would Bear Bryant handled the same interview?
A) Reporter would have learned another use for a man's belt other than holding up his pants.

Q) How would Bobby Dodd handled the same interview?
A) Reporter would have gotten his teeth kicked out.

Q) How should Chan have handled the interview?
A) Bout like he did. Could have broke the guy's nose, could have kicked the reporter's teeth out, could have taken his belt off and whipped the reporter. Either way would have been acceptable.

Admittedly, these are my opinions and we all know about opinions. I'm just glad Chan held his ground on this one and took up for his players. Whether Chan made any points w/us don't matter at all, but I think he did good w/his players though. They'll respect him........& that matters.

I'll throw in my 2 pennies worth here....

Listened to the interview. First time I have heard the Chernoff guy. He comes off as an arogant piece of mule dung IMO.

Only 2 answers I would have liked better:

1. "Every game is a big game no matter who you play and that includes the Samford's of the world (see Appalachain St. vs. Meechigan), BUT there is no doubt that the Georgie game is the BIGGEST of 'em all!"

2. I would not have included RB in any discussion regarding past QB's. I would think that he knows RB is a sore spot for all GT fans. He got baited by the interviewer but CCG brought RB.

just my 2 pennies worth gentlemen!

Re: I'll throw in my 2 pennies worth here....

What is so bad about Chernoff's questions? He was asking things that EVERYONE ON THIS BOARD has asked time and time again. Not only that, but he asked them to Chan's face. It's not like he was bashing Chan before the interview and then sucking up to him during the interview.

Who else would he have talked about? Reggie was only here for 4 of his previous 5 years.

Chernoff may be a super guy in person, but he certainly is a pull no punches radio guy trying to make his mark in the Atlanta market.
That said, his question was valid.

Gailey gets overly sensitive and defensive about his failures like quarterbacks and that out of conference game at the end of the season. Other than these subjects, he will give a straight answer nearly 30% of the time.

Props to Chernoff for actually asking Chan some important questions that everyone wants answers to. Isn't this his job as reporter? I've heard and seen (CSS show) Chernoff several times and he's always very cordial and knowledgeable, so it's not like he some jerk who tries to stir things up.

Chernoff didn't get ticked until Chan got ultra-defensive and starting implying that Reggie's struggles were Chernoff's isolated opinion, rather than a fact realized by everyone else. Chernoff even offered to drop it with "agree to disagree" but CG wouldn't let him. CG should have just said, "we've had some success but need to get more consistency out of that position" or some other BS...

Chan has to be the worst interviewee ever... we either get vanilla, rehearsed answers or he fails to adequately sidestep an argument he can't win (Reggie) and then explodes on the host.

As for the UGA question, if Chan doesn't realize it's the most important game then he's more lost than I thought. He even said the fans are justified in thinking it's more important because we live/work with these people, but still maintained it was just like any other game to him.... what a joke.

I listened to the interview earlier today and again just now.

I don't see what the big train wreck is. I appreciate Chan sticking up for his players and I respect Chernoff for not being afraid to ask a perfectly reasonable question.

I do think Chan gets a little defensive but it seemed that they both kind of cooled off at the end.

I'm kind of glad somebody finally asked Chan about the complete lack of qb development since he's been here.

Re: what I can't figure out is why..........

....none of the interviews I ever hear with Mark Richt recently have brought up last year's vandy and UK losses?

Oh...yeah.....BECAUSE THEY WERE LAST YEAR!!!!

THAT's what made the re-hashing of the entire RB issue totally senseless. CG's working on prep for a HUGE Thursday night national broadcast game that could keep us in the race for a return to the ACCCG and Matt Jerkoff wants to harp on and on about Reggie?

Chan's a better man than me.....I'd have told him to suck it. :D
Actually, to be fair, I have heard local media bring up the "6 losses in a row to SEC East" competition until the streak ended anyway. So, technically, the Vandy and UK losses were included in that.

As far as "taking up for his players", the issue questioned had nothing to do with a specific player; it was that the coaches had not developed a QB. That is, they said a QB had not improved under this coaching staff. It digressed to RB, but the criticism was not of RB personally but his lack of development under CG.

The criticism was of the coaching. Chan was defensive of himself and his decisions; not of a player.

Freakin embarrassing. Chernoff asks a valid question, and Chan goes PMS on him. Helluva coach we got here.

Well, Chan wasn't smooth as vanilla; he got testy at the suggestion Reggie didn't improve at all but it wasn't a train wreck either. There's a couple of points I want to make:

1. It's just dumb to say Chan should say he's failed as a coach or whatever. How exactly could Chan recruit if he just said "yup, you're right. I can't coach QBs?" Dave Braine was similarly truthful and that ended up being maybe the biggest gaffe in Tech history.

2. The UGA answer could have been thought up better, but he's essentially correct that the team should give it all every game. I haven't seen any huge problems motivating the team for UGA the past few years. It's all been the UVA, Utah type games which bite us in the ass for lack of motivation.

3. As far as the Reggie question, again not smooth like vanilla, but Chan was correct that Reggie did improve from 2003 to 2006 although it didn't show up in the stats. While Reggie tanked badly at the end of last year, his improved decision making played a big part in every big win we had 2005-06. Just to be clear, he was not a good QB, but his relative improvement did play a big role against Auburn, Miami and 2006 VPI those years.

4. Reggie has played 4 of CCG's 5 full seasons at Tech. Was he supposed to talk about Bilbo and Suggs in response to that question?

Yup, I didn't think it was that bad, overall. Honestly it's about like every interview Chernoff ever does on the radio. Better than most, in fact. Chernoff doesn't interview, he interrogates, in the guise of an interview.

I'd like to see media types get grilled about their performance more often. They always have the tough questions for people who have actual responsibility for results but they have no real responsibility themselves. There is a big difference between being responsible for implementing something, then living with the results, vs. looking at the results, then saying what should have been done after the fact. It is also a lot easier to suggest a course of action when you don't have any responsibility for implementing it.

I know people at work like media people.
