Coaches Salaries

Bill Curry said in an interview once he was making $45k a year when first hired at GT. I believe he left to go coach Alabama at around $300k

John Tenuta was one of the top paid defensive coordinators when he was our DC. He made $500k per year.

CGC is ranked at #56. Does that mean he’s exceeding expectations? Yes, I’m partially telling with that question, but it is pretty sad.

David Cutcliffe makes the same. Who would you rather have as a head coach? CGC or Cutcliffe? I know my choice.

I'm guessing you'll say Cutcliffe since he owned CPJ. Outside of that, Cutcliffe is an incredibly mediocre coach.

Sometimes mediocrity seems like a distant goal. Are we supposed to get there in year 5 or 7?
We’re 3-3 with half of the year remaining. So I’d say year 3. Possibly year 4 if the ball doesn’t bounce our way. But hey, we’re at least getting what we paid for.

The level of hypocrisy on this board is awesome sometimes. I know it's like that everywhere and I probably have mine as well but holy crap some of you guys are something.

I'm a big CPJ guy but his record against Cutcliffe was not good at 7-4 (6 home, 5 away), finishing 1-4 his last 5 seasons (3 home, 2 away). Once he made the comment about WRs, he was so in our head, it felt like 50% of our season pass attempts were in that game every year, trying to prove something.

Here's the record:
2018/10/13 Duke 28 - Georgia Tech 14 L
2017/11/18 Duke 43 - Georgia Tech 20 L
2016/10/29 Duke 35 - Georgia Tech 38 W
2015/09/26 Duke 34 - Georgia Tech 20 L
2014/10/11 Duke 31 - Georgia Tech 25 L
2013/09/14 Duke 14 - Georgia Tech 38 W
2012/11/17 Duke 24 - Georgia Tech 42 W
2011/11/19 Duke 31 - Georgia Tech 38 W
2010/11/20 Duke 20 - Georgia Tech 30 W
2009/11/14 Duke 10 - Georgia Tech 49 W
2008/10/04 Duke 0 - Georgia Tech 27 W

We can debate a lot of things about CGC but the starting talent level vs what CPJ inherited is not even close to being in the gray area, and despite that, CGC is 2-1 (2 away, 1 home) against Cutcliffe.

We likely would if we dropped UGAg from the schedule and filled it with cupcakes like Elon, which Duke has more of an abundance of on their schedule most years.

I remember when we had the toughest schedule ever because it had UNC, Miami, and Clemson on it.

I remember when Bama paid Saban $4mil and people talked about how embarrassing it was that formerly mighty bama had to stoop to such levels to acquire a coach. And then that first season going 6-6 and louising to ULM. The good ole days...

Anyway on the coaching salary I would say CGC is right about where he should be as the lowest paid head coach among ACC published schools. There are only 2 schools on that list I wouldn't swap coaches with. And I would say Virginia and Syracuse are way overpaying. I would absolutely take David Cutcliffe over CGC if he were 8 years younger but at this point in his life I'm not sure I would want to start over with cut. I would really take Dave Clawson if I just had to pick a new coach from the bunch. What he has done at Wake is impressive. Would anybody be shocked if GT finishes the season 0-6? I mean, I expect they can win a couple of games but I don't have any confidence in coach waffle house to get it done.

Are we getting what we are paying for though? Sure he is near the bottom of the P5 coaches; but still a half million dollars more than the best G5 coach. Hard to say really, I think we are probably getting what we paid for at the OC and DC positions though.

This could be the most ridiculous post of the year. We’re sitting at tied for third in the coastal and yet you think CGC deserves to be paid less than the 6 teams we currently have a better record than?

Well, it took Dave Clauson 7 seasons to rebuild from that mess he inherited from Jim Grobe; so there you go.
