Did we lose our starting QB early in the game? I forget

Yates is legit and the only true QB on the roster sadly. Sims wasn’t even a prominent passer at the HS level.
Peery is the only QB we have who was brought up specifically as a passing QB in this style of offense. He is not an ”athlete” who got by in high school based on athletic ability alone. Yates is solid because he is also a solid passer but at Milton he also lived on athletic ability. But the problem isn’t QB. It’s Patenaude’s vanilla scheme that every high school player recognizes.

The nit I would pick on Gibbs is that he doesn't seem to realize he isn't competing against HS competition anymore. On Tech's next to last position on the last 3rd down he was motoring toward the edge and looked like if he kept going he would have made the drive-extending first down. But he stopped and tried to cut it upfield and got stopped a yard short. Then on the last drive instead of going out of bounds and saving clock, he spun and tried to break it for more yardage. I'm sure those two moves gained him a lot of extra yards in HS but they aren't going to work against D1 competition.

I could not agree more. On most plays he needs to hit quickly and run tough, getting what he can. Looking to take everything to the house keeps you from getting the yardage you need. But, he played well for the most part last night. With his size he is not going to be a punishing back, but he has speed that Mason does not have. We have to get him the ball in space - quick pitches, screens, downfield routes. We threw a safety valve pass one time early to him over the middle. I thought Mason had the better game last night - he gets positive yards through tough running. And, having a four deep RB situation is of little value if you do not use them. Offensive creativity and opportunism was sorely lacking last night.

Sims played like balls but I think it’s too early to give up on him. If we want to win games, we need his talent. Let‘s see how he does against KS provided he can play.
Yep, despite being anointed our next starter by the fans, we pretty much have seen all the upside of Yates. I like him. He has guts, but no way he leads us to more than 1-2 victories as a starter.

Somebody may have posted that in the game chat the play before the injury that took him out.
If he was hurt before the game, I don't think he could have made that sharp pass right on the money with zip on it, right before he fumbled and got hurt.

I saw receivers running free on our first several possessions… and a QB who couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. That’s not a scheme issue.

He does a lot of stutter step motions too instead of cutting upfield. I thought that looked like a new addition as I don’t recall it last year
If I were him being given the ball on these horribly designed plays I’d way more than stutter step. I’d probably hand the ball back to the QB and let him get smoked. Gibbs is a stud and Patenaude’s scheme is horrible. The concepts of the play designs and spacing are just bad.

Sure, you and I could “coach” 60 offensive plays and we’d look good on a few of them. But, Patenaude’s scheme as a whole after 2 years and 1 game is just about the worse I’ve ever seen. It’s a playbook of plays that every team runs. Zero original material. It’s like a power point he got at his first coaching clinic and it’s the Bible to him. It’s like he’s making a movie with extras only so it’s an entire 3 hour movie of background noise. I watch A LOT of college football and our offensive scheme is beyond bad.

There are times when someone is open but the players fail to execute. The horrible truth is that is the responsibility of the coaches. Sometimes I see some plays called and think that is pretty interesting.
For the most part we have a weak and poorly coached ol, good but moderately coached rb’s and can’t consistently run the ball. We can’t pass the ball either and we have nothing on O to hang out hat on as something we do well. Please remember that while saying this our rb’s averaged about 5.7 ypc yesterday.
It just feels like the players on both sides of the ball are being told to “go do this” or “go do that”. They aren’t being coached to improve or work together. They actually spend as much time arguing with each other than celebrating which (if you all remember) was a concern our first year.

Although Sims played poorly and Gibbs failed to display his best talents (The two mistakes cited above in the last 2 drives was obvious), the real travesty continues to be the line play on both sides of the ball. Gibbs was being hit within a step of the line of scrimmage nearly every play and he was not big or strong enough to get free for the big gainers. Jordan was the better back last night because of his size and strength allowed him to break some tackles. His fumbles killed us however. But the biggest problems are the lines. We lost the line of scrimmage again. We could move the ball on offense but when we got near the goal line they would blitz a backer or safety and we never picked him up so Yates was throwing while backpedalling.

What I saw last night was not a scheme issue. It’s QB’s unable to hit wide open receivers and receivers dropping passes. Also poor game management by the head coach. The two TO’s near the goal line was just amateur hour. Jesus.

Good analysis. Given the game situation and how well Mason had been doing I was surprised to see Gibbs as featured back on the next to last drive after Tech go the lead and the ball. Seems like you just keep letting Mason pound the ball, make a few first downs and run out the clock.

Idk guys I saw Gibbs run through some tackles and stiff arm a guy into a lower division of football. He had some ridiculously quick runs and good cuts up the middle, and looked great.

We should be using him more. There's no problem with him whatsoever. The problem is with everything around him. He deserves a way better team than he got last night, from the coaches on down. We shouldn't want a RB that can plow through four DL to gain yards, there shouldn't be any DL for him to plow through. Same for evading three DBs on the edge. Why does Gibbs have to take on the entire defense to make a play? Expectations are way too high here.

I'm glad we have Mason, who is from planet Krypton, to plow through DL because apparently that has to be done right now, but that's really not ideal.

Why did Smith only get 1 carry though? Dumbfounding, especially since that one carry was a 15 yard touchdown.

Becasue he’s small and we needed a power game since our backs were being met by defenders at the LOS most of the game.

I did not see the improvement I expected in the offensive line or the defensive line. I expected significant improvement in the OL with the additional transfers and a full off-season with Coach Key. On the DL, when will Clayton play again? Does he still have issues he is dealing with?

This is probably true. Then again, he was about the only guy making plays last night.
