Does Attendance Top 50K Saturday Night?

50K seems like a lot.

Pros:
  • Coming off a good end to 2023 and a huge win in Ireland - hype train is rolling
  • Local opponent should bring some fans
  • Saturday nights are fun - less hot, no conflicts with day events
  • Holiday weekend, lot of stuff going on in town
Cons:
  • How many fans does GSU really have?
  • Some Tech fans are scared to come downtown at night
  • Holiday weekend, lot of stuff going on in town
I’m hoping for a decent and energetic crowd, not expecting anything close to a full house but hopefully in the 40s and not the 30s.

Who's afraid of downtown at night?

I remember visiting ATL as a teen in 1977. We were in a parent-free group, came down on a chartered bus, stayed at the hotel across the freeway from Tech. I was entranced by the streetwalkers. We had one guy spend the night in a drunk tank and were banned from the hotel forever. I wonder if that still applies, my name was on nothing.

I think capacity is now in the ~51k range. So no, I don't think this game will approach near sell out status. Probably 45k at best.

It’s really sad that we don’t have enough of an alumni base to sell out with season tickets. 51k, less 6k student tickets and 5k visitor and other tickets puts you at 40k. Typical season ticket buyer will have 2 tickets on average, so just need 20,000 alumni to buy in. We probably have half of that. Crazy!

The fact that student tickets sell out and student support seems stronger than ever bodes well for GT fan attendance going forward.
My seats hover over the student section in the UN. I have never seen the student section like it was for the season ending UGAg game last year. The portals to the seats were dangerously packed, IMO. It took security and police until half to clear it. There were students who literally could not move forward to the seats or backwards to the concourse.
With the increasing enrollment at GT, 51k will not be enough seats in another 15 years or so

I'm concerned student season tickets only sold out because it gave access to the Notre Dame game. I hope my concerns are not warranted. If the student STHs don't claim their ticket I hope they can get it to another student who wants to go. I hear the 1,000 "free" tickets sold out very fast.

Our best crowd last year in a non Dawg game was 35K; so, temper your expectations.

Increased student engagement is positive; that's how you'll rebuild the fanbase longterm. I bet we have very few season ticket holders that graduated from 2012-2022

And it wasn't because of students. The student section in the LN was nearly full all season

I’m pretty sure tonight’s game will be packed with drunk students from both schools. Probably a lot of friends between those fans. It’s going to be fun!

I anticipate the south will be full tonight too

Tech grads get recruited by major companies all over the country - and even out of the country. So most move away from the 404. In contrast, most dwag alums work the drivethrough and no one is recruiting them to go anywhere.

However, I believe if Key can turn this around, we'll start to get new sidewalk fans - which right now are all red and black.

Apparently there is a STP concert tonight, why people aren't going to go. I'm worried about attendance, but hopefully it's enough to show the program has support.
