It's weird that anyone ever thought it was, but it seems like every college program in/near a major city has to go through a phase where it tries to associate itself with the city (with a spectacular lack of success) and then gives up on it. Northwestern did it with Chicago, Rutgers did it with NYC, and now we did it with Atlanta. I guess UCLA is probably up next?
The thing with Atlanta is that the actual population of the city is microscopic- NO ONE actually lives in Atlanta and the few random hipsters/ghetto people/rich gay guys who do have zero connection to GT. The city population is on par with that of Tulsa and anyone interested in sports will be sated by the Braves/Hawks/Falcons. There's a huge difference between being a large metropolitan area and being a big city, and ATL is the former. Most recruits would probably run out of fingers before they finished counting how many times they actually stepped foot in the city limits while growing up...it would be one thing if we were in a Miami situation and were the only major program within driving distance of a recruiting hotbed, but we're not. There are like 8 elite programs that are all functionally as close to the recruiting base as we are.
And I say this as a CoA resident. Trying really hard to tie GT to Atlanta in branding was so cringe
