Expect Big Player Shift Next Season

We have the 5th most talented roster in the conference right now

Based upon recruiting rankings? I haven't seen any teams that GT is (clearly) more talented than in the conference. A few that we are roughly equal to, but none that GT can claim a superior roster to. Or, is the claim that the talent is there, but the current coaching is so poor, that it isn't flourishing?

Gibbs, Ivey, Domineck…we probably win the coastal with those 3 and a healthy QB room this year.

We have the 5th most talented roster in the conference right now. Our defense is actually reflecting that a bit this year. It can get significantly worse.
Jared Ivey is a major player for Ol Miss and Wesley Walker is a big player for Tennessee.

As far as our D is concerned this season vs next. We lose Thomas and Elay to graduation, that is basically the heart of our D.

Player portal to where?

Which players are going to another P5 program to immediately plug in and compete for a starting position at a Bowl Bound P5 program?

We certainly have a few top tier players. But I don’t see any of them automatically taking over a position at OSU, Bama or Clemson.

If I’m on this roster on a scholly I certainly take advantage of the best thing I can get— a diploma from a top 25 academic college in the world, and hope for a rebuild and another year to make my case to the NFL under a new HC-ing staff.
We don’t have a lot of guys that would start at another P5 school, but the concern would be of those that could transfer out. At that point your losing your best players, and guys that could be leaders through a coaching transition. Walton, Sims, Nate, Douse, Kennard, Williams, King, Brooks would be guys you don’t want to lose.

Lol, wut?

You mean when there was really no fear of getting car jacked or shot just because. Who needs that öööö?
I was shocked that the clown tried to market Atlanta. I'd guess that those who live there know little of what the rest of the country knows about the city. In 35 years of living on the west coast the only regular atl news (beyond sports) was whether Atlanta or Detroit was the US murder capital. last i looked atlanta was still in the top 10..in the decades when their was a choice , avoiding atlanta's traffic was a priority even if it meant extra mileage ....

Of course.

The natives here are totally ööööing delusional about Atlanta. I have tried to tell them, but they don't want to hear it. "Oh, we're mosdef the Big Ten's top target because . . . Et-lanta." Besides the simple FACT that there are far more dwag fans in Et-Lanta than Jacket fans anyway. I mean, your number one rival and your number one rival conference play their championship games in your city every year. Where else does that happen? Why doesn't the ACC ever play ITS championship game in Atlanta??? 18 years . . . Orlando, Charlotte, Jacksonville, Tampa . . .NEVER Atlanta. Hmm???

rescinding offers would be a douche move. If commits want out after a coach is announced, we should understand. Telling players any offer they got from collins or Key is now null damages the program’s credibility.
That is the norm at other programs. They do not honor offers from the previous staff. Doesn’t seem to hurt them.

Ah yes, the west coast. Long known to be the epicenter of Tech’s football recruiting territory and more recently the target audience for the 404 campaign.

The unrestricted transfer portal has turned GT into a place where lower tier and marginal high school prospects can get scholarships as a conduit to“tryout” for a better team later in their careers.

Why does the SEC play their championship game in Atlanta? Where is the college football hall of fame?

Atlanta is in the heart of college football territory. Tons of top shelf players come from Atlanta. Is it the city proper? No, but it is the metro area. GT absolutely should try to tie into that. We had plenty of exposure under O’Leary. The lack luster Chan years wasted that. Johnson couldn’t spark enough interest because he didn’t have any sustained success. It was all up and down.

Marketing Atlanta is a great idea when your in-state reputation outside Atlanta is dead. At least make a pitch to the >50% of the population that are within 1.5 hrs of your stadium.

I don’t doubt that it’s common. When a kid takes an offer from us, they close other doors in the process. Other coaches move on and sign other players. That’s the reality. It’s also a reality that club coaches, parents, and others advising recruits notice these things and factor it in to the advice they give athletes on who to consider. I’ve put three kids through the recruiting process (2 soccer, 1 diver) and had those discussions with coaches about who to prioritize, what visits to take, what to tell coaches. At best it’s a poker game. The schools hold most of the cards at this stage of the game, they’re buyers in a meat market . So I’m biased in that regard. What I do know is that you can expect as much loyalty and good will from recruits and players as you show them. At best. Reputation matters when trying to convince a kid where to spend four prime years of his/her life. It matters a lot. If you treat players and recruits as expendable dupes, they’ll respond in kind.

Didn’t say if it was right or wrong. My personal belief is it is wrong but that isn’t the reality.

Main point, it hasn’t hurt anyone that has done it. In fact, most understand it for that first year.

All true, but you can’t equate soccer and diving to football. Soccer and divers go to school to get a degree and enjoy their sport for a few more seasons as they transition to the workforce. Football players have a completely different mindset - TV exposure for themselves and their ego, NIL, pro aspirations, etc. Thats why they freely transfer at a much higher rate than Soccer or divers. They are there for the sport whereas your kids are their for education and the sport is the extra incentive. I went thru it with baseball. We are a 3 win program without a head coach. If any football player wants to give up a GT education for a sport then I have no problem with them leaving as there are hundreds ready to take their place.

After some of the starters leave after this year I doubt that we will have the personnel to even get to 4 wins again next season.

This is some Gef Collins logic. Believe it or not, taking in former 4/5 stars that could not compete elsewhere doesn’t make your roster a lot better. Miles Sims is the only one of those cats that is even starting on a 4 win team. A handful of those highly rated 4 star transfers don’t even play at all.

This is it. CFB is a business now, like it or not. The type players we need to have to win consistently look at that way and care mainly about non-academic factors. Thinking of it otherwise is a outdated mentality. Trying to be "better" than that will not change anything except relegate GT football permanently to the lowly state we are in now. The academics are one selling point, but is minor one on a good day with the rare good player who cares at all. This is football (and maybe baseketball) specific and wouldn't apply to swimming, diving, soccer, etc, but that doesn't change reality.

Aggregating the only measure of “talent” that we have is bad logic? You don’t think other teams have 4* underclassmen that aren’t playing as much? We should use your eye test instead?

lol wut?

So the reverse should also be true, right?

Exactly. So what’s the point of transferring if you’re not going to play?
