Sources: Georgia Tech fills cornerbacks job following Ricky Brumfield's departure
Tanner Cotman will coach the Jackets' corners moving forward, sources tell FootballScoop.

With Ricky Brumfield no longer on Georgia Tech's staff, sources tell FootballScoop that head coach Brent Key has split the duties previously filled by the Yellow Jackets' associate head coach, special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach.

Tim Salem, formerly a senior adviser to Key, was previously announced as Georgia Tech's new special teams coordinator, and sources told FootballScoop on Wednesday that Tanner Cotman will step in as cornerbacks coach.

Cotman is currently in his first season as a quality control coach working with Georgia Tech's corners. He previously spent two seasons in a similar role under defensive coordinator Tyler Santucci at Duke.

An Old Dominion graduate, Cotman was a student assistant and then a GA for seven seasons at ODU from 2013-19. He spent the 2020 as a GA at Eastern Michigan and 2021 as the safeties coach and video coordinator at Norfolk State before joining the Duke staff in 2022.

Santucci good. Me hopeful.

Probably too late in the season for it. I do wonder if it's ever been done in-season before
Pretty sure Mike Leach did it in season. A student kicked a field goal to win a contest during a game. Leach sent people to get him and he joined the team.

Arizona State HC Calls Kicking Game 'Atrocious,' Calls For Open Tryouts

Arizona State is holding open tryouts at kicker for students at the university, per head coach Kenny Dillingham.

Following the Sun Devils' 24-14 loss to Cincinnati on Saturday, Dillingham didn't hold back about the team's struggles.

"Our kicking game is atrocious," Dillingham said. "If you can kick and you're at Arizona State, email me. We're going to have kicking tryouts on Monday. I'm dead serious. We gotta find somebody who can make a field goal."

ASU kicker Ian Hershey missed both field goal attempts on the final drives of the team's loss. The first kick would've made made it a one-possession game with over five minutes remaining.

Hershey has made 7 of 12 field goals this season, the kicker's debacle isn't the first instance of the season. Hershey had an extra point get blocked earlier in the season, which led to redshirt freshman Carston Kieffer getting an opportunity to be the Sun Devils' kicker.

To Arizona State's dismay, Keiffer went 0 for 1 on field goal attempts and missed one of five extra points.

"We've missed five kicks in the last three games," Dillingham added. "We've gotta find someone who can kick the ball and give Kieffer more chances as well. But first and foremost, we got to find more guys and try to get somebody else with us that can kick. It's still 100% on me that we're not kicking well."

The departure of kicker Dario Longhetto last year has hurt Arizona State. The two prime candidates, Hershey and Kieffer have gone 7-13 on field goal attempts.

"It's my job to fix it," Dillingham said. "We're struggling to fix it with our roster right now, so if that's the case, we gotta try to fix it another way. What we're trying to do to fix it is not working, and like I said, we've missed five kicks in three weeks. That's not good football."

Students have already answered Dillingham's call to tryout. A junior at Arizona State has submitted a tryout video via X.

"I would love to try out for the ASU football team," Nolan Krinsky wrote. "I am a kicker, punter, place holder and have been trying to walk onto the team for three years now and I love kicking and putting in the work. Kenny Dillingham if you give me a tryout I promise I won't disappoint."

The Sun Devils will use the bye week to search for a new kicker. Arizona State's next matchup is against Oklahoma State on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Around that time when we had freshman teams there was a OT named Al Hutko I think who punted as a freshman but not when he was on
varsity. He could kick the hell out of the football, but I'm thinking the reason he didn't punt when he was varsity is because he was not getting
his punts off quickly enough. That's the way I remember it anyway.
YeOldeRedhead did indeed punt for our freshmen team hitting an 86 yarder vs the BullPuppies on Thanksgiving Day 1968. I actually snapped that one to Al & he got it up into the jet stream heading South to North. Didn't think his punt would ever come down, let alone stop rolling.

Carson preferred QBs & WRs for his punters vice OLs. Thus the likes of Jack O'Neill, Dick Bowley, Chip Pallman, and Tommy Chapman were my usual punters. Besides, being a starting OG or OT is pretty hard & exhausting work to have to go get a punt off quickly.

BTW, Al is still alive & retired down in FLA..... O'Neill, Pallman & Chapman are deceased..... Bowley is a Seniors Minister down around Peachtree City.

All coaches say the same thing after a loss. "We're gonna fix it." That is just another way of saying, "Boy, we didn't do anything at spring practice except watch those cheerleader try outs."

I'm glad these coaches aren't air traffic controllers. "Yea, five mid air collisions at our airport is just too many for one Saturday. It's just not who we are. We'll look at the tape of those crashes. We'll get it fixed. It's surprising, because we do so good on Tuesdays."

Can Jeff Sims placekick  ? He's currently buried on the Sun Devil depth chart at QB, having only been used for mop up duty in ASU's season opener.

At least he's not saying it's communications issues.
