I was thinking drugs. Drugs explains it all
Surreptitiously giving the special teams players drugs would be a quick way to get them to play poorly, and probably harder to detect than coaching them wrong.

From the AJC ....

Brumfield posted a statement Tuesday on X: “I have made the difficult decision to step away from my position with the football program. I am truly appreciative for the opportunity to help our student-athletes achieve greatness on and off the field and couldn’t be more excited to see this team finish the season strong.”

Do you all think he might have roughed up one of our players during the week at practice or in the locker room? Maybe some discipline that went too far?

Open tryouts today. Happens all the time for specialists. Has even been done at Tech, successfully
Even as far back as 1969..... YeOldeDeepSnap, who had played Freshmen Ball in 1968, gone through Spring & Fall Practices in 1969, had one week before the 1969 SMU game to beat out a much smaller (5'9" 165# vs 5'11" 205#) guy from the student body after Galin Mumphord blew out a knee.

Usually there are spare punters & PKers already in the background. If they dress out for the game, they're the walkons not shown on the depth chart or roster kicking with Birr & Shanahan who make you go "Who are THOSE guys?" They may or may not have their name on the jersey.

Probably too late in the season for it. I do wonder if it's ever been done in-season before.

According to my highly scientific method of me watching of 30 years of college gameday, it happens every year somewhere.

For Tech specifically, I think Dan Dyke earned the job in offseason open tryouts. Again, IDGAF about the risk of doing it. I can see the risk of not doing anything every game with my own eyes.

Around that time when we had freshman teams there was a OT named Al Hutko I think who punted as a freshman but not when he was on
varsity. He could kick the hell out of the football, but I'm thinking the reason he didn't punt when he was varsity is because he was not getting
his punts off quickly enough. That's the way I remember it anyway.

I’m sure we have somebody on the team who is the backup punter. To skip over the backup and put in some yahoo from the student body sounds like something Collins would do.
