Let's take a gander at all the DCs who did better against Duke this year with lesser talent.

    Who's Army's dc?

I thought our defense was good.

Then we got 3 turnovers and still nearly lost after scoring 30+.

    Our defense is not good.

on the other hand, we had two stops on 4th down, a strip on the goal line, and an interception to open the second half that were followed up with nothing from the offense.

Tim DeRuyter is available. He was incredible at Air Force and pretty good at Texas A&M back in the day. Also not a great head coach, so not much chance of him jumping ship again for a bigger job. Obviously the experience working with the option offense with Air Force and making them top 10 should be enough to prove his worth to a team like ours.

Clearly , we should keep Roof and hire Chizik as head coach. They won a national championship at Auburn, I heard.

Did you happen to read my previous two summaries of our lack of depth on Defense? Well assuming you did, which is a big assumption for you since you don't know öööö about football, you would realize that we are missing our best player on defense. You know, PJ Davis? Member him?

We aren't going to stop anyone with the players we have at our disposal. Best we can hope for is to slow them down. This has nothing to do with Roof. As I have said before, give him the next 2 years to improve using the players he has been and continues to recruit. Our recruiting has significantly improved since he got here. But you aren't going to stop people playing 18 and 19 year olds on defense. Just isn't going to happen.

Clemson and FSU both scored over 30 points yesterday. Teams score points. That's what they want to do. Grow up and stop crying like the momma's boy that you are.

The lack of depth at the linebacker position got exposed yesterday, in my opinion. PJ's activity and athleticism were notably absent. I think the defensive line recruiting has come along well in the past couple of seasons, although a premiere pass rusher is still the needle in the haystack that has yet to be found. I like the athleticism of the DB's too, although they need to take the next step as they develop and learn to trust their abilities. They were in decent position on deep balls all game long yesterday and on pretty much every single one whoever was in coverage didn't get their heads around to locate the ball. Linebacker is a bit of a tire fire at the moment, though, and other than the continuing development of Mitchell and BJ Swilling coming in next season, I don't see a ton of signs for optimism at the position yet. Maybe Alexander and/or Curry could always make a big step up, I suppose. I think they've got the athleticism to.

The defense does deserve credit for getting the one stop they needed at the end of the game. And, I think the crowd also ratcheted it up a little at winning time and probably deserves a little credit for that second down false start on Duke on their last drive, too. So, everyone who was at the game getting loud deserves a pat on the back, as well.

Excellent summary. Really good point on the false start. Once the few people in attendance got up off of their asses and made some noise, we rattled them. Every game seems to be more poorly attended than the last, and not having the noise when our defense is on the field takes away a big advantage of playing at home.

Did Curry play yesterday? Don't remember seeing him. What the hell is wrong with PJ. He's been out for a while now. We never covered 80 and 88, the tight ends. Looked like the safety (14) was covering them from 10 yards deep. Surely we could put a backer on them to bang them on the line and disrupt their routes. The LBs when then they blitz disappear into the pile anyway. There are still some glaring scheme weaknesses being exposed on the D.

T10. Bud Foster Virginia Tech defensive coordinator $900,000
T10. Mike Norvell Arizona State offensive coordinator $900,000

    For ACC in 2014:
    Salary:
Todd Grantham (Louisville) - $1.4 million
Brent Venables (Clemson) - $1.35 million
Bud Foster (Virginia Tech) - $900,000
Gene Chizik (North Carolina) - $750,000
Ted Roof (Georgia Tech) - $622,000
Charles Kelly (Florida State) - $583,000
    Jon Tenuta (Virginia) - $500,000
Dave Huxtable (NC State) - $450,000
    Marion Hobby (Clemson) - $400,000
Don Brown (Boston College) - N/A
    Jim Knowles (Duke) - N/A
    Jim Collins (Duke) - N/A
    Mark D’Onofrio (Miami) - N/A
    Josh Conklin (Pitt) - N/A
    Chuck Bullough (Syracuse) - N/A
Mike Elko (Wake Forest) - N/A

PPG allowed as defensive coordinator in 2014:
Brent Venables and Marion Hobby (Clemson) - 16.7
Bud Foster (Virginia Tech) - 20.2
Don Brown (Boston College) - 21.3
Jim Knowles and Jim Collins (Duke) - 21.8
    Todd Grantham (Louisville) - 21.8
    Jon Tenuta (Virginia) - 24.1
    Mark D’Onofrio (Miami) - 24.3
    Chuck Bullough (Syracuse) - 24.3
Josh Conklin (Pitt) - 24.8 at FIU
Charles Kelly (Florida State) - 25.6
Ted Roof (Georgia Tech) - 25.7
Mike Elko (Wake Forest) - 26.4
Dave Huxtable (NC State) - 27.0
Gene Chizik (North Carolina) - N/A

So Ted's pay (even at 750K) is about average and his points per game is a little below average. For those wondering, Charles Kelly has a new contract worth ~$850K a year.

Yes 750k was his 2015 salary

Its not avg. he is paid in the top 15 of all the land for dc. That is not avg. and his d efficiency ratings are always below avg. he gets paid premium dollar for öööö results. Cant spin this one.

2 years from now you're going to ask for Roof to have more time because

    1) injuries
    2) not having good enough players
    3) something something something he's a tech man

You and loser tech fans like you are the reason we never get anywhere.

When the Head Coach is the Offensive Coordinator and architect of the offense the evaluation between the OC and DC will be one-sided. I wonder about two things with regard to defensive talent. How do they allocate the recruiting priorities between offense and defense. And, does the type offense we run negatively impact recruiting for the defense as kids are told they aren't preparing for the NFL facing it in practice so much.

I'm not sure how to feel about this one. On one hand, our defense is NOT good. On the other hand, it looks pretty much the same as it has every year since 2009. You could also argue that Wommack and Groh both had better talent to work with. Roof has had very little in the way of playmakers on D, especially in the front 7. If recruiting is indeed improving (which I think it is), then perhaps firing doesn't make sense, especially since the core of this recruiting class is probably dependent on Roof being here.

    Just my 2 cents.
