Football Scoop Nuclear Winter

I agree that he dug himself a hole this year. I disagree that his job is or should be in jeopardy this year. If next year is like this year, I think there will be little disagreement on his future.

However, I think the more likely scenario is we go 6-6 with some of us touting that we've turned the corner and others lamenting that we put ourselves through a painful rebuild just to get back to Gailey-ville.

It seems like you have decided what next year is going to look like and aren't really giving any credit to additional depth and having a few upperclassman Collins recruits. You're convinced that the coaching is bad enough that nothing will make a difference. It's possible, but it's also conjecture.

I would be inclined to agree to wait until next year if i saw significant improvement this year. IIRC my expectations weren't that we'd be 8 wins in year 3, but that we'd be bowling. Even if those are considered too lofty, i'd still like to have seen significant progress to indicate that year 4 will be 7+ wins. I don't see enough evidence to indicate as such.

Yes, i have given up on seeing sufficient improvement for next year (and for years following) to have made it worth the squeeze. You're going too far by characterizing my opinion as "nothing will make a difference." There are things that could make an improvement, but I simply don't see enough from the trends so far to indicate that next year will meet my opinion of success, so why wait the extra year? If he fires both coordinators and finds better ones, how long do we wait to see if they pan out?

The big problem to me with the 'give the players time' argument versus the coaching is the Clemson/UNC outliers. No, Clemson isn't as good as prior years and UNC was not the juggernaut they were perceived, but our team played pretty damn good against both of them. How did that not continue? The players proved capable to me in those games. They looked like crap in the first game, despite the close score. They did what they were supposed to in the second game. Played Clemson close enough to have a chance to win. Beat UNC. We were hopeful, if not confident that things had changed. Then, the manageable part of their schedule arrived and it's been a mess. How is that not on the coaching? Where did the 'improvement' go?

The defense is a different matter, but for offense the injuries along the OL probably have played some role in that.

There are a lot of reasons I think a firing right now would be nuts. The financials are self-explanatory and I doubt there is much debate there. Also, recruiting momentum is still there and we are trending for one of our best classes. Yes, Collins has had a couple of classes, but depth is built over several and it would be nice to finally not have an injury or two render an entire position unit useless for half the season. I also really do think it would be hard to find a good coach to come here after we just fired Collins after 3 years of the transition. I know you disagree on this point, but I dunno how to convince you otherwise, so I'll leave it be. And after all of these threads across multiple sites, I am not sure that I have seen a reasonable suggestion for a replacement.

In sum, I think the criticism is understandable, the clown memes and mockery are funny, but serious suggestions of a firing right now are crazy.

*Regarding coordinators, I am not actually sure we will see changes there, personally. I'd wager that a few position coaches are gently told to find a landing spot, but I am 50/50 at best on either of the coordinators being fired.

UConn hires Jim Mora Jr. (Gonna turn this into the coaching carousel thread, I guess)
