Full Speed Ahead

At some point, the arms race isn’t worth it, especially for all the crap like the clubs that aren’t about actually watching the game.

Chairbacks make pretty good sense. More/better screens are OK, but we don’t do a great job with what we already have.

But spending hundreds of millions of bucks on making the stadium a “destination” independent of sitting in a seat watching a football game seems like a fool’s errand.

Not sure I agree. There's a reason everyone, including NFL and MLB teams, is doing this -- the game simply isn't enough for a lot of people anymore, especially not when the HD viewing experience at home is so good.

Making the stadium a "destination" is more likely to get whole friend groups and significant others attend the game, plus it will make people more comfortable spending more money there.

I'm not saying I necessarily like it -- I wish the focus was more on the game and less than everything else. But it's the way everyone is moving for a reason.

The volume didn’t seem as bad for Miami; maybe someone listened. Or maybe I was atop the Upper West so the speakers didn’t directly attack me.
Bad at basketball games too.
From my seats it was worse for Miami.

One thing about the HD home viewing experience. It's good, of course, especially compared to the old pre-HD days but it could be so much better. One thing you get in the stadium that you can't do from the normal broadcast is to look at various portions of the action. It's always from the side then they zoom in on the pocket etc... If they really wanted they could add the ability to have different camera views to choose from, that would be awesome. I'd love to be able to watch the various routes/coverage for example.

I like the ability to help my team by yelling on defense. Hard to replicate that from home. Maybe we could have some sort of subscription service that allows folks to activate air horns in the stadium from home or something.

Yes! We could each have our own personal season ticket from home drone that has a megaphone attached, would give the swarm a whole new meaning.

. In the mid 2000s they were slinging fresh cooked, greasy double cheeseburgers. "Cheese double cheese."

Looking back I'm sure they were awful quality, but I have to say they were exactly what a college student needed after a long CRC session.
You mean SAC?

I've heard rumors they are going to institute a one time charge of $10k a seat for club access. Sounds like what we tried before when we proceeded to fall miserably. Prime ticket holders were displaced and no one was willing to pay what they were asking so we were forced to bring the price down after a few seasons. Has anyone heard anything similar?

Not a rumor, direct quote from my ticket agent when I spoke to him to learn more (I had seen a "recommended donation"). $10k per seat for normal club (can be spread over 5 years). $20k for the new speakeasy (limited to 250 tickets). Tech fund for club going up to "$1500-2000" per year as well on top of that. The $10k is not a PSL - you do not own anything, can't sell it back later. It is a donation to a scholarship fund. When asked what was to stop them from doing it again, 5 years down the road, I was simply told that they wouldn't do that again until they did another major construction project that required reseating. Was also told that anyone who gets club tickets at a later date would also be required to pay the 10k, so it's not like you would get a deal by waiting.

Now, for the 10k and increased Tech fund, you do get nicer chairbacks (think wider and padded apparently) and you get all you can eat food and beverage, including alcohol.

I hope this doesn't go as poorly as I fear.

$10K spread over 5 years. Unlimited alcohol. It seems GTAA is under the impression I can't drink $2K/year in alcohol at home games.

All a waste unless it includes getting rid of the Shaw öööö and putting natural grass back in the stadium.
Why don’t they paint that shite green at least? It looks like wore out, threadbare old-school astro-turf

They said the increase in Tech fund was to cover that stuff. The 10k is just a money grab.

It seems like these type of insane one time money grabs would just money from donations to ticket "sales". People who spend 10k a seat also donate $$. So they are likely just to remove that 10k from their future donations and the AA ends up where they started except they have alienated many.

10k over five years is just 2k/year though. This might capture people who don't have so much money/passion they're willing to give it away for "free" but could be talked into a premium option if they feel like there getting something from it.

I was gifted club tix to a basketball game last year (UNC game to boot - hell of a night). My first experience in da clurb, and it was pretty cool.

If I was the sort of person who wanted to go through all the trouble of coming to the stadium but then not really watch the game, $2K for unlimited, decent food and drinks for hopefully 6-7 games a year isn’t terrible.

But I’m cheap and happy to sit in my seat with a bottle of water and a CFA, so I’m good until I get displaced by the coming reseating.

Here's the plan:

Remove bleachers. Come in with concrete and fill in the entire West stands. Trowel it all into a slope that covers the existing concrete. Then, set up forms with the new row spacing, say 2 rows where there were 3 so you get 50% more leg room. Pour new concrete into the forms over the afformentioned slope and, viola, new concrete stands for the new seats!

Benefits? Seats will be higher and closer to the field.

CEs, check my work here.
I'm thinking Roman Colosseum. Pirate ship battles, dropping floors, etc.

This will be a good thing and will increase attendance. If we continue to improve our W-L record, we could have a waiting list for season tickets. That would be good.

  • Georgia Tech has raised $300 million out of its $500 million goal to enhance the university's athletic facilities.
  • The campaign began in October and construction is set to start in 2026.
