Future of Upper North Stands?

So I take from all this that no one actually knows whether the construction will spill over to Upper North. Fair enough. Thanks.

Some info here: https://www.ajc.com/sports/georgia-...-board-of-regents/ODHTT4ZGWRD37FTUDGZZZAQWH4/

From the article:
"The renovation was the centerpiece of athletic director Todd Stansbury’s $125 million capital campaign, dubbed “Athletics Initiative 2020.” Located at the northeast corner of Bobby Dodd Stadium and opened in 1982, the Edge Center will be demolished (along with a portion of the stadium’s north stands) with a new structure built in its place."

I have no idea what that means for the Upper North.

The renderings I've seen look like they place the new Edge Center in the same spot the old one is. I don't think changes to the Upper North are part of the current design.

I don't believe the design is fully baked. These are older renderings but show no change to seating in the upper north: https://atfund.gatech.edu/edge-center-student-athlete-leadership

I was also told new premium seating will be coming online at some point. I believe there will be a component to that with the renovation.

And the old north lean to stands sucked.
Actually they were great seats. In the late 80s they used to sell reduced price season tickets there- called it the “family plan”. For a young guy like myself (right out of school at the time) with 2 kids it allowed us to have season tickets. We were on the next-to-top row in the center and they were great seats.

So, based on the link above, I actually take this back. Comparing the rendering in the article to the current BDS seating chart, it looks like most of section 219 is sliced off. (I count 5.2 sections after the NW "curve" and there are currently 6 sections in the upper North.) Interesting.

Any initiative involving TStan should be reevaluated and re-prioritized.

Why build something like that right at the corner of the stadium? I just do not get the structural design planning around the stadium over the past 20+ years. Georgia Tech, of all places, should have better architectural designing for BDS and the surrounding area.

We need to just do fake fans up there like they did in MLB for the pandemic. Robots fans created by our students would be even better.

Exactly. Especially given the apparent finances. Where is the long term master plan for the stadium and adjoining buildings, structures and facilities? It just seems to be turning into the Winchester House. A sprawling patchwork with little coherence.

Back before I had been to a Tech game and was only watching them on tv, I had the impression that the stadium was wedged between skyscrapers and other buildings. The old white walls with the GTs painted on them on east and west stands and the Wardlaw building with no seats in front of it, and the Edge wedged between north and east stands with the sky scrapers in background gave this impression when watching on tv. That could be an interesting design aesthetic we could go with using our existing footprint.

Here’s another stadium with space and design challenges:

We should probably elect to own the quirks and accentuate them while spending our energy on making what we have nicer. It’s a hell of a lot cheaper

I do like that there is a hella lot more sideline room for the home team than the visitors there. Ours has more room for us, but we should have taken another 2-3 yards

If you just took the right half of that photo, just the stadium itself could pass for the old east/southeast stands at Grant Field.

The fact that we have a world class architecture school and still ended up with that abomination of the upper north infuriates me.

Make the stadium design a senior project with the only constraints being 50+k capacity expandable to 75k and protect the view to midtown for night games.

I say give it to Mike Brady for a re-design.
