Game day advice for first timer

I concur with those that said the Varsity is a good thing. Campus is fun to just generally walk around. There are some other restaurants nearby that are hoot quick sit downs. Figo is a good example. That's on the West side of campus.

There is a walk down from Tech Tower where the band comes into the stadium with the Wreck. That's usually about an hour before kickoff. It's fun. After the game, the band plays "the Horse" and then leaves. They play "Budweiser" at the end of the third quarter.., Im sure there are some that I'm missing.

 Last week we had a pretty good Vol to keep around, now this random """"JSU fan"""""""""" shows up who knows how to play the retarded game everyone here is constantly engaged in.

Next week I expect nothing less than a UCF fan with actual schizophrenia and frequent acid flashbacks.
This guy is a 100% legit (no pics)

If you've never had the pleasure of eating at The Varsity, I highly recommend that for the experience as much as the food, which is good greasy hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, onion rings, etc. Get a Frosted Orange. You won't regret it.

I also want to echo this. The Varsity is the best food on the planet and it isn't close.

Tailgating folks are scattered all over the place, from the lots east of the interstate to lots that are on campus, and some greenspace on campus as well.

Let us know where you are staying and we can probably recommend something between your hotel and the stadium to check out as well. Are you in Midtown?
Thanks for the straight reply. Are there are many tailgaters? How welcoming to the enemy? We will be wearing red and black, after all, just without the Packers logo.

We have done The Varsity on previous visits to ATL, but not on a GT home game day. We are staying upscale ;) at the Hampton Inn near the stadium.

5th street bridge is good tailgating, probably the highest density. There are some guys on the south side that do gay stuff in the bushes that you have to watch out for. The Varsity lot also has good tailgating and a 9 am chili dog + beer will get your day started off on the right foot.

Yellow Jacket Alley is where the Ramblin' Wreck, the band, and then the team arrives at the stadium. Starts at 10 am at the north end of Brittain Dr.
Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah that will be a good general spot for you to check out, lots of people there. And then you can take a stroll across campus from there if you want.

Us GT folks are pretty friendly in general.

It's kind of fun to watch the band play by the campanile (giant metal shaft), then run over to the library and play, then march down the hill behind the Ramblin' Wreck.

Get to your seat in time to see the Wreck lead the team onto the field - that's probably the biggest tradition we've got going on gamedays.

We're prone to periodic clusterfargery, and we're trying out new security procedures this week (I guess that's sort of a tradition), so allow a bit of extra time to get into the stadium.

We'll definitely check out the band. I am not sure if our band is playing anything pregame outside the stadium. Do visiting bands usually march in playing something, or just file in quietly? I think y'all will enjoy the band. At least in years past, the band drew a larger crowd than the football team.

What time does the Wreck usually drive in leading the team? I think our band is heading into BDS about noon.

What are the new security procedures? I guess they're on the athletics site?

Hey! I'm not playing!

Just so you know, my usual hangout is shaggytexas (THE Shag). I think that may be the epicenter of douchebaggery mental illness in football fandom. I see y'all linked to the meltdown thread which we have helped to perfect and bring to new lows for about a decade now.

Here's a good general schedule.

http://www.ramblinwreck.com/gameday/101.html

Band marches down the Hill 45 minutes before the kick. Team comes out behind the Wreck about 3 minutes before the kick.

Opposing bands don't usually do much outside the stadium as far as I can remember. We've had a prettt good run of FCS opponents with good bands, especially a couple of HBCUs. I remember you guys having a big band the last time you came to town.

Our band is a little more rag-tag (we're an engineering school, after all) but they have good material to work with.

I expect campus to be a little sedate due to early start, FCS game, and UT hangover, but it should be a nice day for a game nonetheless. I don't expect that you'll encounter any hostility, so take a stroll around campus. The roof garden of the Clough building is a good place to get a view of campus and skyline and tailgaters.

Oh, the new security is basically just wanding everybody on entry. That sort of thing tends to gum up the works, though.

We sort of follow the NFL clear bag policy. Small bags are OK and will get a cursory search. If you have a standard size "clear bag" like a lot of stadiums allow, you can bring in food and drinks and stuff.

2 of my good HS friends marched on the drumline at JSU. Clint has also consulted with GT's drumline in ths past.

Visiting bands do not normally march through campus. I think Maryland was the last band to try that several years ago and it was an embarrassing uncoordinated fiasco for them, IIRC.

Alright.... I feel pretty creepy. I tracked this poor girl down.
