GIBBS AP 2nd team AA

If players could be drafted out of high school the nfl would draft them to keep other teams from getting their rights. If they weren’t ready, they would start a legit minor league like baseball to develop them

It's a possibility, though I think there are challenges unique to running football teams that would make it more difficult than minor league baseball (e.g. cost, the importance of team cohesion -- tougher to call people up and send people down, physical toll on the players, etc.).

In any case, it's clearly cheaper and better for the NFL to allow college football to continue to function as their minor leagues. Given that they've already won one high profile legal challenge about the age limit, I don't see it changing any time soon.

You really think that HS kids are ready for the brutal physicality of the NFL? No way would any of them get drafted right out of HS.

The NFL will continue to let the colleges provide minor leagues for them for free.
Yes. And there would also be plenty of “one and done”. Why else do you think the players union insists on that policy to protect their potential to earn income and play football for a living?

The punishment doled out to Reggie Bush and USC makes ours look tame. Making the school sever all ties with him? Removing his likeness from the school and remove references to him? Not allowing him back on campus in any kind of official capacity? I believe he also had to surrender his Heisman, which I don't know how the NCAA has authority to do that

Reggie Bush was a great running back. Just 100% pure perfect athlete.
Now he eats breakfast at Wendy’s.

I hated to see Gibbs go. I blame GC for some of it ( not giving him enough touches ) but, I do believe the major reason was our putrid OL. They were incapable of opening holes for him to hit. Also, what stupid head coach would put his best featured running back to take KO returns??

The type of HC who is trying to get his star running back more touches in a way that won't get him killed by our putrid OL?

A lot of kick return yardage.

Because our opponents were kicking off against us a lot all year.

Not so many punt returns.
Gibbs was a special player and a lot of fun to watch... but I am intrigued by the idea that a third of his all-purpose yardage was on kickoff returns. To his credit a lot of his returns gave us good field position – but honestly a lot of them didn't.

In fact, ever since they changed the rule so that you could fair catch the ball anywhere behind the 25, and start the possession at the 25, I think the majority of kickoff returns have been net-negatives for the team, because it is pretty hard to get out to the 25.

So it seems as if all-purpose yardage (as a statistical category) should account for that now... he may have had a 17 yd kickoff return from the 1, but that was actually a net 7 yard loss for the team as a whole.

Unless it is late in the game and you need a big play from a KO return (see Clemson this season where we fair caught the KO), I would prefer we just take the ball on the 25.

I agree. It also takes away the block in the back call of 10 yards that often accompanies a kick off return.

What if Gibbs decides to come back like Griffin?

Biggest recruit left on our board is Jahmyr Gibbs.....Chip Long needs to get this guy to come back.

The Devil You Know: Jahmyr Gibbs Should Have Stayed at Georgia Tech

"Coach Collins has used Gibbs as creatively as any back in the country. As opposed to simple check downs out of the backfield, Gibbs was regularly used in the vertical passing game on long developing wheel routes and arrow routes. His lofty receiving product is a result of a combination of Collins’ scheme and Gibbs’ natural explosive run after the catch ability."

"Just in the last year we witnessed Eric Gray, a player with a similar skill set and similar situation, transfer from an upstart program to supposed greener pastures in Oklahoma with Lincoln Riley. Instead of creative usage and dynamic play, Gray faded into relative obscurity. He appears headed toward being an undrafted free agent whenever he declares for the NFL draft."

He's right, you know. Mitch Mustain (5* HS QB) thought he would go to USC and be the next great Heisman Trophy winner from the Trojans and be a high draft pick. He got buried there.

Now that would be a coup. Have to wonder if seeing our better-than-expected signing day could have an impact? I'm sure he, like most fans, felt absolutely awful about the program and its direction after those past two losses, but time combined with picking up talent on signing day helps a lot with that. Of course he probably only has one year left before going pro so not sure how much he will care about the signings...

He’s not coming back.

good point, looks like his average is right around 25 yards, so presumably no benefit besides the one kick off TD he scored, which is a benefit for what's it's worth:

Is there a deadline for the portal, or do they just stay there until they sign with another school or return to their original school if the original school wants them back.

I’d be surprised to see him not in school somewhere else by first couple weeks of January when break is over. But hypothetically, he could stay in school through next semester and remain in the transfer portal until he finds his next spot.
