Griffin back in the portal

I can’t really remember. Were things this bad under Bill Lewis?

No. His first two years were 5-6. But, he was coaching just two years removed from a national championship. In year 1 he had Shawn Jones at QB, Bell and Levens ar RB. I still believe his tenure would have been different had it not been for losing the big lead at home against FSU his first season. Remember Ross never coached in an ACC with FSU. That was a game changer. In year 2 a shoulder injury kept Donnie Davis from moving in at QB and we struggled at that position. Talent on the offensive line and defense had dipped from the 90 team in pretty drastic fashion. Sadly, Bill was buying into the throw the ball over the field, score a lot of points, and have a chance to win at the end mentality. His teams obviously practiced 7 on7, but they were not great at blocking and tackling.

Before his third season, one he would not finish, it was a complete train wreck. Both Ray Goff and Lewis went into the season with grumbling fan bases. Mark Bradley wrote that both were in trouble before the season, but that Lewis was the dumber of the two, because he had hired his replacement, George O’Leary, to be DC in the off season. The third year was a complete disaster and George was coaching by season end. Many believe that many players tanked for Lewis to get O’Leary in.

I triggered a bunch on here by stating I was sick of seemingly every day, almost with every team, reading another one had entered the portal. Tough. Now let those who think fielding a team of rental players with no loyalty to Tech any more than their last team, and those leaving Tech for their new team, find new found happiness and success. Not me. If a player has a true hardship for family, medical etc. let them have a transfer. Give anyone a one time transfer but sit out a year as in yesteryear. I, and many other college football fans would like to support a team/program as opposed to replacement players here for a year.

The rule needs to change but disappointingly it doesn't seem like anyone in power is talking about changing it.

You totally left out the Donnie Davis/Luginbill fiasco that splintered the locker room and lead directly to the team quitting on him.

It’s not changing back. In what world should a free citizen be restricted in using their talents? Come on. Scholarship students transfer schools every semester. You just don’t hear about it because you don’t follow those students like you do athletes. Coaches aren’t restricted in leaving or being hired. If a player transfers from GT they don’t get to take GT‘s scholarship money with them so what’s the problem? In the end the scholarship money just goes from player A to new player B. Just like it happens with other students who transfer into and out of GT.

The loyalty angle has been dead for decades so if someone is using their own feelings or morality that is on them to get over their own personal butthurt. And the entire reason this started was because the NCAA knew their system wouldnt stand up in the courts.

I tell you what, whoever puts on a GT uniform next year I will root for whether they just transferred in or have been here 4 years. It doesn’t matter to me because I root for Georgia Tech not individual players.

Pretty sure Dr. Rice brought O'Leary in - probably to take over the ship at some future point. O'Leary interviewed for the job originally but was not selected. I don't think he would have come back but for a gentlemen's agreement with Rice that he'd be the coach at least by the following season but Lewis sucked so bad he couldn't even finish the season. I was at the MD game when he got fired.

I believe it was Kim King who talked O'leary in coming back. Dr Rice didn't think he would come back but Kim King after talking to to got him to come. It's in a book called "Tales from the Georgia Tech Sideline"

We just made a lot of changes to the coaching staff. If the new guys coming in are more hard-nosed disciplined guys, the attrition we’re seeing is normal. I believe that this team had a 3 year vacation and now they’re being coached by some real football coaches, so bunch of them are quitting.

Agree. This attrition is the new normal. Folks just aren’t use to it yet. We have lost about the average as other schools have so no big deal.

It's not the numbers it's the talent
What talent? I guarantee you we’ll win more than 3 without them if the coaching is better on both sides of the ball. Could it be better with them and good coaching? Perhaps. But I’m not gonna cry over anybody leaving from the team that lost to their last two opponents 100-0. Other guys will step up.

Gibbs and Ivey? You’re a ööööing moron if you think they don’t matter

Were they part of the team that won 3 games total? You’re whining about what could have been. But feel free to be a little bitch everytime someone hits the portal it ain’t skin off my nose.

öööö face, Gibbs led the country in all purpose yardage until the final week. If he sucks so bad why did Alabama win a recruiting war to get him? Think he’s going to ride the pine there? Ivey was our best defender and went to a top 10 school. Perhaps we won 3 games BECAUSE of those guys and it would’ve been worse without them.

Listen I’ll make it very simple for you since you’re a ööööing idiot maybe this will help:

1) The players are leaving because of the coaching changes.

2) We had to bring in new coaches because it wasn’t working. The coaches we hired seem to be better choices for their jobs than the ones we had.

3) It’s better to bring in better coaches and lose players than to sit with the same coaches and not lose any players.
