Gruden to Tennessee

I'm okay with it not being Gruden. I'm not okay with telling the boosters to all öööö off while having one of the most attractive job openings and making probably the second worse coaching hire right above Boston College.

It's not as attractive as you think. Why else has it been turned down by so many? Gruden was an illusion. I'll ask you again, who would have been better than Jones and was attainable? You guys seem so butthurt and calling it the second worse hire only proves it.

When you have unlimited funds, with booster support that Hart and Cheek refused to touch, then you cannot really do much can you. Unfortunately, these two ****ing morons have no financial stake in this and no personal stake, so they are completely removed from any ramifications and that is ****ing retarded on the part of the university. Peyton Manning was sending Butch Jones text to go to Colorado, when he has an opening at his own Alma mater. You don't go fire Dooley when you can throw the bank at anyone IF you use the unlimited amounts of it you have with booster money. But no, Cheek reallocated 18 million from the ööööing academic department into the AD's pocket so they wouldn't have any booster influence in their search or decision. Its beyond ööööing stupid and arrogant beyond all reason of them. If Georgia Tech had unlimited booster support in funds and your AD decided to go without that I'd be furious in that scenario too. UT is an attractive position and you're a lunatic if you think otherwise, and if you throw enough money at people they will come. Hart didn't.
 
If I were a RockyTop fan--well one with a house not on wheels and more than two branches in the family tree--I reckon I'd be patient with this hire. Butch has won almost 2/3 of his games as a head coach and did pretty well with not great talent at Cincy. I wouldn't be popping corks off the champaign, but I wouldn't be melting down.

Its not Butch I'm upset with. He may turn out to be the next Urban Meyer who knows, and I'll root for him to do well (while hoping Hart and Cheek get ousted). The point is how Hart handled this travesty of a coaching search, that led to him hiring Jones (1 day after interviewing him might I add).

It will be interesting to see how well he does in a rebuilding situation. Central Michigan had won its first conference title in 12 years under Brian Kelly right before he got there, and Cincinnati was 34-6 under Kelly before he got there, so he actually lost more games his first year than Kelly did in 3.

So who were you going to get with those unlimited funds? I think the biggest mistake was not hiring a search firm and letting it all play out in public.

Now let me explain to you why it isn't as attractive of a job as you think. Like it or not, Dooley was respected in the coaching community and he inherited a dumpster fire, then wasn't given time to turn things around. That cost you Gundy and Strong who are in much more stable situations. Gruden simply isn't interested in the college game. Throw in that the SEC is the most difficult conference to compete in and the retarded hiring of Lane Kiffin, there are more than enough reasons to stay away from UT for a coach.

For the record I hated UT until I went to college here. Before I was always a Vandy and Georgia Tech fan first. So currently Vanderbilt is the best team in football I have to cheer for, which a few years ago would be insane.

Then we need to downsize the program and slash the budget. If we're incapable of hiring coaches who can compete for titles, there's no ööööööö reason to spend big money to chase Chik Fil A Kickoff invites.

You've been unable to list a single coach who UT could get with all their money who is better than Butch Jones. Don't you get that your fanbase is deluded? The school swung for the fences and was turned down and then did the realistic thing and found a coach with FBS experience. It's so sad that you were outsmarted by Arkansas.

If you think that Butch Jones was at the top of anyone's coaching search for UT you're an idiot. And when you shun the boosters that have the financial capacity to throw the bank at whoever they want, of a program that has the resources on the AD of a top five program; this argument isn't even worth making. Maybe we fall to the level of Colorado after this but that would only be because of this disaster of a coaching search we just had and we're tied to Butch Jones at the hip for the next few years who may or may not deteriorate the program further. Hart and Cheek did this search this way with no booster support, and the results of interviews wit the choices above Butch would likely have been different if the AD hasn't sought to do the search "their way". You can think that no one wants to coach here, and after Jones is done I may join your position, but at the beginning of the search it was a position more attractive than Arkansas or Auburn by even ESPN's account and we were outmaneuvered on all accounts and should be mocked for how poorly the entire thing was executed. I'm done trying to prove a point that should be common sense. If Cheek and Hart are shown the door I may consider supporting the disaster of a hire that occurred.
 
Further for anyone calling Butch Jones a solid hire I'll assume you'd also be willing to call going 10-3 in 2011 with the schedule he had an 'accomplishment'; We'll just ignore his 4-8 season with Kelly's players (That went 12-1 the season before).

Dang dude. Just give it up. Butch is your coach and he'll do an admirable job. Gruden was never coming there despite the "insiders" info or boosters' money.
